"About 400" Gold Sellers Already Banned From Warhammer

Mythic's Mark Jacobs lays out his ZT policy for cash transactions for in-game items.

Maybe the Tome needs a tab marked
Maybe the Tome needs a tab marked "how not to get banned" in it.
Sweatshop or no sweatshop, I've always found the practice of selling in-game items or currency for real money to be pretty gross. Obviously, this issue hits massively multiplayer games harder than most, as only crazy people will bid on, say, a high-ranked Call of Duty 4 account. Some people like to justify it by saying they only really have fun with the endgame of an MMO. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't have fun building up a character, you probably shouldn't be playing an MMO to begin with.

Warhammer Online's stance on gold selling has been made crystal-clear thanks to a blog post from Mythic's CEO, Mark Jacobs. His approach involves what he calls a "strike team" that is charged with straight-up banning people who are advertising gold for sale via the game's chat channels. In less than a week, around 400 accounts have already been banned.

This sounds like a pretty good start, but Jacobs is quick to point out that it will be a "long and costly battle" and that this is only their first step. It'll be interesting to watch and see how they try to stay ahead of the problem.

Building up your character is fun, but the game doesn't really get good until you hit level 70. err... what's the cap in this game?

Good thing they are striking early before their economy is messed up.

Warhammer is really fun. Good to see they are doing stuff to keep goldsellers at bay.

I thought that one of the biggest draws to RPGs was the character development process anyway... Who are these people that only want the end?  Why is the beginning and middle not entertaining enough?  Anyway, good riddance!  Glad to know they are actively banning accounts for this... it is definitely best to start early.

What's to stop people just setting up a new account though?

I know that every time I step foot in Stormwind in WoW, there's a new person (from the same website) outside the bank, lvl 1, selling gold. Maybe if it never takes off, they won't get the money to keep on setting up accounts. Gold sellers suck, so I hope that happens.

This is a great thing they're saying, I remember when I played WoW every where you went you were bombarded with constant Gold or Powerleveling services and it got very tiresome very quickly.

Great to hear about a developer stepping up to the plate, when I did play WoW for a brief period gold farming and spamming of the sale of gold really irked the fuck out of me. Good job Mythic Entertainment.

I know quite a few folks that bought gold on WoW whenever they wanted to get their epic flyers.  Meanwhile, I worked my ass off for it, grindin' like Hell.  Personally, the thing I hate is the advertising through whispers and spamming on all the chat channels possible.  I mean, the way I see it...if someone is going to buy gold, they can easily alt-tab out and look the shit up on the web.

I don't care how someone decides to play the game.  I know a lot of people say that it fucks up the economy of the game and what not, but they could just as easily combat it by making gold easier than shit to get like WoW did with the 25 dailies bullshit.  Frankly, all the good shit is non-sellable anyways, so whatever.

It's hilarious, everytime they ban a gold seller, a little box pops up with their name like this

awesome, I don't even play MMOs and I think farming is gross. Real farming is awesome on the other hand, milking chickens and the like

I'm glad to hear they're cracking down on stuff like that.  it kinda takes the game out of the game so to speak.  Althought, I'm hippocritical due to the fact that I tottally milked that money exploit in Pub Games.

I'm pretty ignorant of MMO's, since my only experience with them is jumping into Second Life for all of five minutes, then quickly jumped out due to it's boring me to death. But who in their right (or even wrong) mind would buy MMO gold with real money? I understand that it would screw up the fictional economy. But I certainly have no pity for those dumb enough to buy from these swindlers. Isn't the point of these games, you know, to play THROUGH them?

People.

I used to play Wow a bit and always thought gold-farming was a bit of a jip. Then one day a guy offered me a gamecard and the BC Expansion for gold! i thought he was joking but told him to pst me the number/s and i'd pay the gold, which he did and it worked! ...we carried on doing this for a few more months until i got sick of the amount of time i was sinking.

Kinda say's something about my level of addiction when I was 'working' in-game to fund the actual playing of the game... vicious.

Fighting gold sellers are always a losing battle, no matter how you do it. The farmers always find a way, always. I consider myself experienced when it comes to MMORPGs...yea, they always find a way.
Speaking of gold sellers. Hellgate:London is pretty much just a haven for goldselling bots now. With the game pretty much dying the only thing you see in chat is gold bots and its a constant flow of the spam.

I would think it would be possible to have an MMO WITHOUT currency.  I wonder where cheaters would concentrate then.

People that buy gold are idiots since all the items have a rank requirement, and you get all the good equipment by doing quests...unless I am missing something.
