Activision Axes Franchises, Reveals Studios In Earnings Call

Guitar Hero is taking a break, we'll see a Spider-Man game in 2011, a new Call of Duty studio was announced, and more!

Activision just finished up with a monster of an investor conference call that had a few surprises and meaningful bits snuggled in between the hardcore financial talk. This call in particular had a lot buzz going in. Just an hour or so prior, reports were sneaking out about the publisher’s decision to can Guitar Hero and, surprisingly, True Crime: Hong Kong, which has been demoed to press several times.

Turns out those reports were basically accurate. Here’s the run-down:

BEACHHEAD
Activision has created a new wholly owned studio to focus on Call of Duty content and support what could become a pay-for subscription platform for the shooter’s robust and ever-growing community. I’m not 100-percent certain of any of this, though, due to the ridiculous amount of marketing talk. Here’s Activision CEO Bobby Kotick’s take on what Beachhead, the studio and the project, is, via Joystiq:

"Beachhead will create the best-in-class online community, exclusive content, and a suite of services to supercharge the online gaming experience like never before. The platform will support in-game integration and bring online experiences and console play together for the first time. The platform has been in development for over a year and we're very excited about the increased value we can bring to the community. We look forward to sharing more specifics on this exciting new endeavor with you in the near future."

== TEASER ==COD: BLOPS
The Microsoft "exclusively first" window on Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC is toast on March 3, 2011. This is the date when the game's first map pack, "First Strike," will appear on PSN for an unspecified price. You can grab a first look at this particular version over at the PS blog right now.

GUITAR HERO AND DJ HERO
Sales in the music genre have flatlined and, to be frank, Activision hasn’t been giving us what we’ve wanted with its most recent Guitar Hero titles, so it’s no real surprise that the publisher is giving the franchise a break. In a statement that preceded the call, Activision confirmed that it is disbanding “the Guitar Hero business unit” and no longer working on the title it had slated for 2011.

The wording here suggests that the franchise as a whole is being put to bed for much longer than a year. It’s not easy working on a game with as many licensing hurdles as a Guitar Hero has to jump over without a dedicated business unit. We’ll have to see what’s up over time.

Also, as for DJ Hero, Activision has stated that no music games will be coming in 2011, so don’t be expecting that 3DS title anytime soon, either.

TRUE CRIME: HONG KONG

United Front Games’ True Crime installment has indeed been canned. According to Activision, part of the reasoning of this decision is “based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences.” Read: Call of Duty.

To be fair, TC: Hong Kong was an ambitious open-world action game filled with more than your usual Grand Theft Auto. United Front was attempting to build a game that had a little bit of everything, and the roughness around the edges as a result showed at some previous demos.

In a statement on its Web site, the developer apologized about not being able to finish the game with Activision and said it’s setting its “creative sights on a different horizon.”

TONY HAWK

Like Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk is getting a break in 2011. The last two games with his name on it required that lovely plastic skateboard peripheral and were massive sales flops. "We will release no new music or skateboarding games in 2011,” Activision COO Thomas Tippl said during the call.

BUNGIE AND BLIZZARD'S NEW STUFF
Don't expect to play a completed version of the Bungie project in 2011. As revealed during the call, the game isn't slated to release this year. Also, Activision isn't counting on Blizzard to get Diablo III or the next StarCraft II game to get out the door in 2011 either.

TV, COMICS, AND MOVIE-BASED PROPERTIES

In Q4 2011, you’ll get another Spider-Man game created by the folks at Beenox who were responsible for Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Also, a new Family Guy game, a Wipeout game, and apparently an X-Men and a Transformers game are slated, too.

So, yeah, overall, money was made and it appears as if Activision will be leveraging the usual stuff: Call of Duty, its movie tie-ins, and World of Warcraft in the near future. I think that about sums it up. Anyone surprised by any of this news?

UPDATE: Added in the Black Ops release date stuff and noted the Bungie and Blizzard news that came via the investor call.

That sucks about True Crime.  But, then again, the series was notoriously rough around the edges despite being made with good intentions (Streets of LA was a clunky mess of genres while New York was glitchy beyond all belief).  Maybe Hong Kong would have continued that trend but maybe it could have turned the series around.  We'll never know.

I worry about Call of Duty now, but then I remember we still have Battlefield 3 on the horizon and Bad Company 2 going strong so I don't worry.

Both activision and blizzard are working togeather b/c they both like the idea of making there users pay extra ontop on the 60 to 100 $$$ they pay to get there games.

Eh, that True Crime seemed alright.

CoD is stale and boring.  They need to stop with the linear path and actually let players have some fun.

With the direction the Tony Hawk games have been going in, this is probably a good thing.

Also, I noticed something:
Guitar Hero, published by Activision, gets the axe. It's biggest competitor? Rock Band, co-published by EA.
Tony Hawk series, also getting the axe. Biggest competitor (and frankly better games as of late), Skate. Published by EA.
Respawn Entertainment forming after the whole thing with Activision's cherished CoD franchise? Yeah, EA Partners.

Jesus, didn't think they'd be killing off Guitar Hero any time soon.  They've been over milking it for years but to actually get to the point where there's not even a point in making these games in about 5 years is crazy, I though Guitar Hero and Rock band would be the new Mario vs... well not Sonic.

It's a bit of a mess, but I can't be upset about Guitar Hero, which seems to be getting the most ink in the mainstream press. It was nice for awhile, but they didn't change up the formula enough to keep it moving forward. It deserved to be axed, shredded, and unplugged.

Yeah that's true,  can't really think of another publisher that would invest  if it were offered other than maybe THQ they do have the saint's row series so another open world style game might be ok with them.

Looks like Activision is relying heavily on the COD franchise. Not a good idea from a business standpoint. The next couple of years don't look so good for Activision, it will all depend on the success of this new COD subscription experiment.

Awww :( I was looking forward to that new True Crime game, how can they cancel it after all the previews and videos? A bunch of new screenshots were just released really recently. I hate Activision -.- They have NO good franchises now, and even if you do still like COD or whatever, they're going to run their last remaining franchises into the ground! If they cancel everything that's creative or fresh, who the hell's going to buy their games for much longer?

Well I suppose what I mean is, on the bright side Harmonix is still operating and producing content. (Which I  purchase and enjoy fairly regularly)
They were recently able to pull off the ability purchase their studio back and are independently owned by themselves now.
At least they still have a fighting chance which is more than people who worked for Neversoft and Red Octane can say...

Edit: Well crap, I was in the Rock Band forums and just discovered HMX just laid some people off recently as well, but my above statement is still true.

I think you're being a little naive about kids with credit cards, they get their folks to do it for them.  Subscriptions for something like CoD have been discussed before, and it actually makes sense considering the sheer number of people playing them.  Going for a package deal of something like $5 a month for a map every odd month and a weapon or perk every even month.

Activision is an anomaly to me. You would think a company that makes as much as it does off of its popular franchises would be more willing to put out less profitable/mainstream games because they could easily recoup whatever losses those games would have. It confuses and scares me a bit that they only want to focus on their popular franchises. I guess I can understand that they don't want to lose money at all, but surely they have to realize that they can't rely on COD forever right?

It's clear that Activision is relying solely on the console market to make the most money through the Call of Duty franchise, which isn't good. My fear is that they'll run the series to the ground, as they did with the Guitar Hero franchise, by over saturating the market with too many COD games.

Honestly this sounds like justifiable business decisions with poor business strategy. The strategy is, "We are going to stream line our development to give you more of the same stuff you love, and rid ourselves of the same, old, bland stuff you don't. It's win-win!" What they fail to realize is the keyword SAME. One day, COD and WOW will be bland and not exciting to the market. Their approach seems to be resistant to innovation until the franchise dies, and under their current strategy it will cost them every franchise they own, eventually.

I kind of liked the first True Crime and had high hopes for the new one, so it kind of sucks they're just canning it for the sake of Call of Duty. On the other hand music games needed to die pretty much the moment they started churning out artist-dedicated ones to flood the market.

Also... a Family Guy game?!

Have to agree, the game was pretty much done all the content was there and was in a fully playable state just needed polishing and optimising, Whilst the True crime games were not the best in the world they were decent enough, i had fun with them and TC-Hong kong was looking on track to being a fun enough game.. such a shame Activision has the licence for it as it would be nice to see it released under a different publisher maybe even take -Two.

From some of the things I had read, it seemed like Activision isn't killing the Guitar Hero and DJ Hero franchises, but they are merely taking a break on those until 2012 or after.

Nonetheless, Activision and their milking ways are just bullshit.  They need a new original IP that they will SUPPORT instead of just leaving on the wayside *cough* BLUR *cough*.

That's a pretty clear statement that what they have repeatedly denied is true: they plan to make their Call of Duty series independent of XBL and PSN, and charge for multiplayer access. He states clearly it is a platform, offering a suite of services. That to me sounds like "pay a WoW-like subscription, we don't charge for map packs or multiplayer access any more".

Thank god they cancelled those games and franchises so they can focus on Call of Duty which is all I ever want, I don't at all feel like those games are all Call of Duty 4 or that Activision is going to flood the market with them until kill that franchise too.

Oh, and I respect anyone who can cancel several franchises, try to justify that, and then go on to announce half a dozen movie/TV games.

Done with Call of Duty; Kodick doesn't want the masses getting any variety or originality.

@sate2801: There are a bunch of ways you could interpret it. For instance, he could be talking about subscriptions.

Then again, this could be some sort of online integration. Maybe even social networking. Something similar to the Speedwall, or possibly something even more comprehensive (integrated website similar to rockband.com or steam).

The subscription thing could be a bit different as well, even if it were to be implemented. For instance, they might start putting out, say, quarterly map packs, and you buy a subscription that pays it off either before or during release automatically, so that you can just hop online and download the pack. Sort of like pre-ordering, but for DLC.

Hell, they could even be talking about some sort of integrated, in-game (or out-of-game) toolset for map-making (similar to SCII), or possibly straight-up modding (similar to DA:O). I'd be all for a comprehensive SDK because it'd allow for a wider range of gameplay (more realistic damage and shooting, or more arcadey, a wider selection, brand new textures and levels, and possibly even game modes, etc.)

This could also involve DRM or anti-cheat, one of which would probably be well-received at this point.

Activision may also be thinking about some sort of online-only CoD, perhaps with an even more robust and fully-featured multiplayer than the current sytem (some sort of "global" thing would be interesting).

We'll have to wait and see. Perhaps it's none of these. Maybe it is just straight-up pay-to-play with no extra value. Who knows.

Oh, and how is activision the number one publisher?

Because Blizzard.

Show of hands, who among us, for all the crap we're slinging at Activision for becoming what amounts to "Call of Duty-R-Us," will still be buying the next Call of Duty game when it comes out?  I've never had interest in playing a Call of Duty game, and now I have less interest in Activision products in general, given that any releases I might have had interested in are no longer coming.

Without CoD or Blizzard, Activision would tank overnight. Look at the shitacular games they have lined up. A Family Guy game? Is this real life?. On top of that they cancel True Crime: Hong Kong, arguably the only good game in their entire stable of releases. I now herald thee, Craptivision.

I really wanted to play True Crime. I should have expected this since it has been so long since we heard anything about it.
