Activision's Next Call of Duty is Definitely Black Ops II, In Case You Were Still Wondering

Activision inadvertently let the cat out of the bag this morning, along with some setting details.

So. Many. Drones.
So. Many. Drones.

As perhaps was expected, we now definitively know what the next Call of Duty game is, many hours before its scheduled reveal. If you thought this year was going to be different, that the NBA Playoffs would be just that much sweeter thanks to the exclusive, all-encompassing reveal planned for tonight's game on TNT, sadly, once again you are disappointed. More likely, however, you don't care at all, and just want to know about the frigging game. Understandable.

Well, thanks to Activision accidentally putting up the game's UK promotional site a smidge early, we now know this year's Call of Duty is, as expected, the sequel to the mega-successful Treyarch-developed Black Ops. Black Ops II is coming to all the expected platforms, and it's doing so on November 13.

But wait! There's more! In addition, we now know a few basic details thanks to some plot and screenshot leaks. Here's the premise of the game, according to the website:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare.

So, basically, hey, remember how the Cold War setting of Black Ops was kind of neat and slightly different from all of the other modern shooters out there right now? Yeah, well, screw that. They're doing their own future guns and modern-ish imaginary conflicts, just like all the other games with future guns and modern-ish imaginary conflicts. Oh, and drones. There are a lot of drones, if these screenshots are to be believed. So that's something, I suppose.

We won't be seeing any video until tonight's TV reveal, unless of course someone decides to leak that too. We'll keep an eye out for that.

Well, it seems they weren't going to wait for Infinity Ward to make the futuristic shooter. At least it's not a rehash, setting-wise.

It's 100% drone-based gameplay. They're actually rebooting those old Descent games.

Wait wait wait...is this going to be a sequel to Modern Warfare 3? As in, post WWIII? If so...that's really interesting. Could it be that Treyarch might finally have Price in their game? I have to say, I really did not expect this. Fully thought they were going for the 70s. Very interested in seeing this trailer.

Indeed, lots of fun ways to play the mp, also great leaderboards and customization, and ICE CUBE YO!

Really disappointed that they're dropping the Cold War era for generic near future shooter #302. The only things Black Ops had going for it were the setting and unique story.

Col War in the future sounds interesting. Although I'm still amazed by the fact that this many games later I'm still "interested" in anything Call of Duty related. I think it's like some pavlov's reflex where I hear Call of Duty and my ears perk up.

Alex, Black Ops 1 wasn't different than modern shooters because it took some liberties with its weaponry to make it more...you guessed it...modern. I don't have any interest in playing call of duty anymore but the near future stuff is a lot more enticing then you know, the same fucking guns from the last 3 games (not including world at war).

I thoroughly enjoyed Black Ops, so I'm pretty stoked to check out Black Ops II. It actually did change up quite a bit of the basic Call of Duty formula with the amount of customization you had over your multiplayer profile, as well as the options available for guns and the way it handled unlocks. I'm really hoping they go back to that setup. I also hope that Black Ops II has the same complexity of maps that the first one had. The only bad map that I can think of outside of Nuketown was Array.

I´m sure this will jump around to different eras of the conflict a bunch. I doubt they will go "Day 1, 2 and 3 of modern military conflict" with this. If they do, I´ll be disappointed, cause I thought Blackops had a pretty cool setting and story..

Blops had Cold War Blackops stuff, Second World War Stuff and Vietnam in it.. even if some of the Vietnam levels were pretty weak.

I'm disappointed that this isn't a direct continuation of the story from Black Ops I, but this sounds neat.

So are they creating new guns for this? Or is it going to a regular guns like the FAMAS, but know you call in drones instead of dogs.

Well I am really looking forward to this one. I just hope the one change they make is to remove the lag compensation system from multiplayer, which is the thing that is keeping me from really enjoying MW3 online.

So where are we in the "run-it-into-the-ground" business model with CoD? Is this their Guitar Hero Rocks the 80s? There can't be much more blood in that stone can there? Should I ask one more question?

Colored me uninterested. The whole franchise is generally uninteresting to me but I liked the whole historic like feel of Black Ops. Not really all that interested in modern military though. This will be a pass for me.

It's in the future, which is good, fresh. But not far enough in the future, and I would've liked to see them hold off on a future setting until a new console.

Black Ops was the last Call of Duty game I ever bought, because it sucked. I doubt there will be a big difference between sequels considering Black Ops was basically using modern technology and the developers didn't give a shit about historical facts. I mean red dot sights in the 60's/70's, that game could have been great if they took advantage of the era it was set in but I guess we'll have to see if anyone can do that right.

If the new setting allows for a significant revamp of the gameplay, the multiplayer progression, the level design and the story-telling, I will be interested.

If it's just going to be another beige/gray/black corridor crawl punctuated by scripted explosions and tacked onto the same online play from the last five games but now it's the future then I will not be interested.

Your call, Treyarch.

I think that might be Activisions call actually. I'd bet my money that Treyarch and IW don't want to make the same game every year for going on 5 years now (CoD4). But The games are the best selling in the world, Activision doesn't want any change that might push people away.

Having not played any of them since MW2, this just makes me want a 2142 sequel. The Frostbite 2 engine just blows me away with the destructibility, granted it's not as crazy as Bad Company 2 for balance reasons, but if the COD series don't follow suit it's gonna feel really dated.

All 5 Call of Duty games released on the XBOX 360 are in the top 10 selling games of all time for the system (based on this perhaps dubious site: http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/7/xbox-360/). I will make a bold prediction in saying that this will break that run.

All 5? There have been 7 CoD games on 360.

Yeah, I realised my idiocy and tried to edit it away. I wasn't quick enough it would seem.

Though the fact there has been 7 is absolutely mind blowing.
