Alan Wake 2 Isn't Alan Wake 2, But Some Other Nebulous Entity

It's not a sequel, and it's not DLC, but it's something. It's definitely something.

Yesterday, a number of sites (including us) reported on a resume listing that seemingly heralded the existence of Alan Wake 2, an as-of-then unannounced sequel to last year's psychological action horror game from Remedy Entertainment. This morning, Remedy responded to several of those reports (not ours...*sniff*...) with a confirmation of the game's existence... of sorts.

So reads Remedy's Statement:

Fans of the franchise will be excited to learn that yes, more Wake is coming! But to be absolutely certain to avoid confusion, this next Wake installment will not be Alan Wake 2. But neither will it be DLC. The rest we're saving for our official announcement when we'll actually SHOW YOU.

We are really excited about this project which a slice of our team has been working on for the last months. It's something that'll definitely give more to the Wake fans out there, but just as importantly, this installment will also give an opportunity for players who aren't familiar with the franchise to finally jump on board.

Yes, confusion has most certainly been avoided here.

Don't ask us, Alan. We're just as confused as you are.
Don't ask us, Alan. We're just as confused as you are.

So, to recap: It is not an Alan Wake sequel, nor is it a DLC offering for the first game. Rather, it is something new for fans of the property, but also something that new players can "jump on board" with. Is it a prequel? A Dark Athena-esque updated repackaging of the first game? The Alan Wake/Max Payne crossover we've always dreamed about? Does it have four legs, yet only one foot? If I figure this out, will The Riddler spare Commissioner Gordon's life?

Cryptic language aside, Remedy seems supremely excited about what they're working on, and promises we won't have to wait too terribly long to find out more.

We can't wait to show you more, bear with us. Release dates, platforms and pricing are unconfirmed as of yet, but Fall 2011 is probably a good guess. More coming soon!

I hereby decree a bounty upon this puzzlement! I want someone to slice this Gordian knot before Remedy makes its (seemingly) inevitable E3 announcement. First person in the comments of this story to guess correctly gets some profile points, a Whiskey t-shirt of their choosing (based on whatever we have lying around), and I promise to finally talk to someone about getting rid of that damnedable "first comment" quest.

but it didn't sell worth crap.

Not true, it ultimately performed quite well and, according to the remedy guys in their forum, pleasing to both them and microsoft. It just had a really, really slow start.

The quote about "It's something that'll definitely give more to the Wake fans out there" makes me think it wont be a re-release of the original. They are smart enough to know people won't buy the game again just with some extra added material.

Maybe Alan Wake will become the next Tom Clancy, and we'll get to play through games based on his books.  Kinda like Garth Merenghi, but with better hair.

I'd assume you either play through Thomas Zane's story, or through Tor and Odin's story.

Would love for this to be multiplatform Director's Cut, which basically adds some open world elements, and allows players to turn off the HUD, or at the very least fade in/out

Alan Wake did a lot of things right, but it was missing something for me...

Still, i'm glad Remedy will get another chance to make a 'Wake' style game, as any huge Stephen King fan will be glad.

So like brotherhood. It diverts from the main storyline but still gives you what you want. It might be a prequel or follow another character(his wife?) instead.

If i was to make a guess, Id say the game will be based of Alan wakes books. Alex Casey?  It's set int he world of Alan's writing and its a crime drama almost like Max Payne.

My guess would be an expanded edition of Alan Wake available for more "platforms." I have to assume that the additions/changes are substantial or they wouldn't be getting our hopes up.

It's gotta be somebody investigating the events of the first game, a rookie detective perhaps? An overenthusiastic Alan Wake (the author) fanboy? They arrive at the town to re-trace Alan's last known steps and, inevitably, find themselves stcuk in a maze of crazy people and flashbacks of scenes from the first game. Anyway, that would give them an excuse to remind you of the events of the first game, introduce new players to the events of the first game, and gives you a way of bringing Alan back. I'm pretty sure I'm 1,000,000% correct, even though I just wrote down the first thing I thought of.

Perhaps the events of the game from another perspective, and with a totally different set of gameplay mechanics? That'd be cool.

It's not gonna be multiplatform, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a Kinect enabled edition of the first one or perhaps a Kinect focused entry in the franchise that isn't tied to the plot of the first.

I'm going to guess it's something for Kinect. Alan Wake is published by Microsoft Game Studios, remember? They have an excellent franchise and flashlight-based shooting gameplay. It definitely fits in with Kinect. If it is I may have to think about getting one...

Technically Brotherhood was 1.3333333333 (etc) and Revelations will be 1.66666666 (etc)

Says it's a part of the studio working on it. Sounds like an Xbox Live Arcade title to me. Eighter it's a Case Zero/Case West type of deal or it's a top down shooter like that Dead Nation one.

Alan Wake: Shake that Bake, a dance rhythm game for Kinect.

Pre-order bonus includes Alan's flashlight (no actual use for the game, but you can shine it at the Kinect sensor, while dancing, to confuse and ultimately obtain marginally better results!

Limited edition will net you Christmas lights to wrap around yourself.*

*Barry not included

Sounds to me like they're gonna give Alice Wake her own game. Perhaps searching for her disappeared husband? That's what I've been hoping for after finishing Alan Wake and reading Stephen King's Lisey's Story anyway.

Just make sure they hire different writers than the ones they had for Alan Wake.  Ironically, the writing was the worst part of that game.

Hate to spoil the excitement, but It's an iOS game, peeps. After the release of Alan Wake and its DLCs, Remedy started to make Death Rally for iOS. Why? They needed quick money after disappointing sales from the big investment Alan Wake. To survive, they're probably continuing with that smaller stuff until they have an idea for a big game again that Microsoft/whoever feel they can fund.

As a comparison, guess what 2K Czech, the makers of the original Mafia game - then Illusion Softworks -, started developing after Mafia 2's disappointing sales. Top Spin 4, a freakin' tennis game. I am not joking.

i will only buy a Alice Wake game if she is pantsless 80% of the game. Y'know, just like how she is depicted in Alan Wake.

How about Alan's Wake -- During a trip to Ireland, Alan is possessed by the ghost of James Joyce and spends 14 years working on a book no one understands. Pages found would read like this:

What clashes here of wills gen wonts, oystrygods gaggin fishy-
gods! Brékkek Kékkek Kékkek Kékkek! Kóax Kóax Kóax! Ualu
Ualu Ualu! Quaouauh! Where the Baddelaries partisans are still
out to mathmaster Malachus Micgranes and the Verdons cata-
pelting the camibalistics out of the Whoyteboyce of Hoodie
Head. Assiegates and boomeringstroms. Sod's brood, be me fear!
Sanglorians, save! Arms apeal with larms, appalling. Killykill-
killy: a toll, a toll. What chance cuddleys, what cashels aired
and ventilated! What bidimetoloves sinduced by what tegotetab-
solvers! What true feeling for their's hayair with what strawng
voice of false jiccup! O here here how hoth sprowled met the
duskt the father of fornicationists but, (O my shining stars and
body!) how hath fanespanned most high heaven the skysign of
soft advertisement! But was iz? Iseut? Ere were sewers? The oaks
of ald now they lie in peat yet elms leap where askes lay. Phall if
you but will, rise you must: and none so soon either shall the
pharce for the nunce come to a setdown secular phoenish.
