All About Halo 3: ODST

Bungie talked plenty of specifics about its upcoming Halo side story at E3.

Things have gotten ugly in New Mombasa.
Things have gotten ugly in New Mombasa.

Amid all the hubbub of E3, it may have slipped your mind that we're mere months away from a new Halo game. It hasn't slipped Bungie's, though, who was on-hand at the show talking details about Halo 3: ODST.

For starters, the game will ship on two discs. The first will be single-player only, containing only the ODST campaign. The other disc will be a sort of Halo 3 multiplayer compilation, with the entire Halo 3 multiplayer framework and all 21 previously released maps included. There will also be three new maps, one of which is Heretic, a remake of the Halo classic Midship. So original Halo 3 owners and people who buy ODST will be able to mix it up online, regardless of which disc they're using.

In demoing the single-player campaign, Bungie proved how much they've improved their engine, artwork, and on-the-fly storytelling. I saw an in-game cutscene that took place from the player's perspective just before the ODSTs drop into the war-torn city of New Mombasa, and just about everything about the visuals--from the detail of the character models to the camera movements--seemed more refined and believable. I never thought the cinematics in past Halo games were particularly strong, so I'm glad to see Bungie stepping up their game in that department.

This scene also gave me a good dose of the ODST commanding officer Buck, who you may know better as... Nathan Fillion! That's right, Firefly's Captain Mal plays a major role in the game, not just with his voice but also his likeness. It was a gratifying geeky moment to see Fillion come in barking orders at the ODSTs, the kind of thing that brings an unstoppable smile to your face. If you're a huge nerd, that is. (I am.)

Firefight seems like an interesting new take on Halo co-op.
Firefight seems like an interesting new take on Halo co-op.

Here's something else you might not know about ODST: it's an open-world game. Well, sort of. It's not an open world in the sense that there are bustling citizens and collectible items all over New Mombasa. (Quite the contrary; the beleaguered city looks devoid of human life.) But the game isn't arranged in linear stages like past Halo games. Instead, the playable area of the city is laid out roughly in a circle on the map, with markers indicating available missions that you can approach in any order.

Bungie has updated the game's heads-up elements to help you navigate the new open city. You get contextual information like the map and a compass with waypoint markers popping up on the inside of your ODST's visor, Metroid Prime-style. A lot of this city data is provided by the Superintendent, New Mombasa's friendly municipal AI. The Supe's not exactly ODST's version of Cortana; he's more action than talk, helping you out by opening doors for you and that sort of thing. Bungie's Joe Staten said it's the difference between a "smart AI" and a "dumb AI." Hey, I'll take all the friendly robot help I can get.

Lastly, Bungie talked a little about Firefight, the game's cooperative mode. It's similar to Gears of War 2's Horde mode, or Survival in Left 4 Dead. In other words, it's all about fighting wave after wave of enemies with up to three friends for high scores. Unlike Horde, Firefight has no end; you keep fighting harder and harder waves until everyone is dead. There's a shared pool of lives that all players draw from, and skull modifiers will switch on and off between rounds to change the way the game plays.

ODST is looking like a great way to extend the Halo franchise and its signature dynamic combat without turning out Master Chief for the umpteenth time. I like this slightly different take on the series and I can't wait to play it when it hits stores in September.

I hope this game is at least longer then Halo3.

EDIT: According to Bungie's Podcast, it's 3-6 hours long on Normal/Heroic difficulty. That SUCKS!

I'm pretty stoked for this, when I heard Fillion was in it the game went from being an ok I'll buy it at some point and became a pre-order first day pick up at 10am soon as GameStop opens their doors kind of thing. Also the Firefly co-stars are in it from what it seems like in the trailers, good stuff.

ODST isn't considered to be a standalone Halo game; it definitely isn't Halo 4, if that's what you were expecting. Naturally it will be shorter than the core games of the series. Think of it as an extra big expansion pack with multiplayer maps attached.

Also, I'm super stoked for this game. I was going to re-buy Halo 3, but seeing as how all I wanted it for was multiplayer and all of the multiplayer maps will be included... Hm... Can I wait four months?

Sounds cool...but only 3 new maps? Shoot. I was expecting at least 9-10. I'm checking out the campaign for sure though.

Seems like this game didn't excite all that many people when it was shown at E3 (me included), but yea this game looks well worth the money.

Seems a bit expensive to pay full price for an expansion pack given the short length they said it would have (loads of new content, but still runs on the same engine with the same character models etc), but I will probably buy it anyway, being the halo sucker I am.

" I may be a bit cynical... but it seems Bungie are just keeping the bed warm so to speak,to keep the series in people heads until the next proper Halo is released..it's obviously just a re-working of Halo3... using the same multiplayer etc.. not that intrested in this tbh. "
With the popularity of halo 3s multiplayer... i highly doubt they need to do that "
They probably need to keep Halo 3 in peoples minds this fall because of Modern Warfare 2 coming before Halo Reach does next year. CoD4 did a lot of damage to Halo 3 back when it was released. The first month of Halo 3 there was easily a million+ gamers online. Then bam CoD4 came out and Halo 3 dropped down to roughly what it is today. CoD4 did that overnight and the online pop never reached its original glory for Halo 3. Though because of the excellent amount of content and care Bungie has over Halo it managed to outlast CoD4 though CoD4 is still no slouch after two years either.

im not so sure about the firefight multiplayer being all crazy awesome, but if you want some new maps this would diffenetely <spelled wrong< be the way do go. especially where the new engine looks alot smoother. as a fan of the halo 1 pistol i think that alone would make me like the multiplayer 100x better.
im sure the campaign will be awesome as is all halo campaigns, but im not sure i agree with you guys that this is just milking the franchise, only because if they were doing that i dont see why they would introduce their new engine now (which looks completely awesome) and why they announced halo:reach as well.
i think the game will be a great addition to the franchise and for anyone who wants a slighty< new halo experience and who is sick of hearing about master chief this is great. i think it will be well worth the 60 bucks and i think i will get into it alot more than i did halo 3.

I feel like I've moved on somewhat from Halo 3. But this game looks pretty cool. Also, what happened to the rumors this would not be a full-priced game?  it's listed as $60 now on Amazon. Not surprised at this, just disappointed.

There's also a female soldier voiced by Battlestar's Tricia Helfer. I get the impression that the crew behind this are huge sci-fi TV fans. I wonder if we'll hear any other familiar voices in he game?

" I'll definitely be getting the Special Edition for this, it's probably the most practical SE I've ever seen, it comes with a controller! Is it sad that part of me whishes it came with a Recon cat helmet?
I'm surprised that the game is coming on 2 discs though. You think that with ODST being a rather short game they would be able to fit on the Multiplayer, but I guess with all the maps that are going to be on there it could get a bit stuffy. With the amount of time I put into Halo 3 Multiplayer It'll be nice to have a dedicated disc for it, not that it will do or change anything at all, or will it make the maps load faster?

"
yeah, im looking forward to deleting all those map packs off of my hard drive and opening up some space.
