All-in-One Heavy Rain: Special Edition Arrives Next Week

$29.99 nabs you the full game, plus some bonus features.

I'm still pissed the game never explained what was happening during those weird blackouts.
I'm still pissed the game never explained what was happening during those weird blackouts.

If you missed out on Heavy Rain last year, Sony’s prepped a special edition that’s arriving next week, complete with Move support, the one and only episodic add-on (future installments were ditched in favor of adding Move), and some other bonus features to round things out.

The whole package will only set you back $29.99.

Say what you will about what Heavy Rain did wrong--and it did plenty wrong--but I’m still encouraged to see designers like David Cage trying to do something different. Games can’t get it right until they get it wrong, and maybe Cage isn’t the guy to make that kind of storytelling click, but it felt like a step in the right direction. I’ll play whatever he does next.

Can someone please explain something to me? If the dad wasn't the killer then why the hell did he keep blacking out and waking up with an origami figure in his hands? WHAT DID HE DO DURING THESE BLACKOUTS?!! That shit just doesn't add up. Also... how did the Origami Killer know when these blackout episodes were going to occur in order to kidnap his son? Also... lets not forget the killer was a 60 year old asmatic who walked with a limp. I know for sure my 10 year old brother would whoop his ass if he tried to abduct him.... im not saying my little brother is invincible, but you gotta ask yourself how hard it would be to overpower this guy...

They removed the things that explained that because people complained about the paranormal stuff a lot in Indigo Prophecy. And the explanation was Paranormal.

So they cut parts of the game out? They should have left it in... sure it would have been a little weird and a little left field, but I think it would have been better if these questions were answered.

There's some of it.

@myshutup: I feel that...the devs DID get their share. That copy was new, once. They were paid for every copy the first time it was sold.

If I go and sell my car to someone, Toyota doesn't get paid twice for the same work. (The government does, however. Bloody taxes.)

i like how creative the idea of the game is going into emotions and making you think. i wish they had a bigger budget like blizzard does to really create something mind blowing. I dont think they could really do justice to this game without a bigger team and money.

Playing it twice means that it must have been good enough. Whatever. Just seems ridiculous that someone can take 20+ hours of entertainment from something and not feel the slightest bit of desire to compensate the people that worked on it. Hey, thanks for digging that huge ditch for me. But ya know? That ditch isn't quite as wide as I wanted it, so I'm not going to pay you for it. Plus, if I was in a third world country I could have had some slave kids dig it for free so whatever.

Actually, as he specifically stated, he did not really enjoy it and the second playthrough was giving the game a second chance, which he still didn't care for. So really you could argue the game was a waste of his time. So really the analogy is more like "Hey, thanks for digging that ditch for me. But ya know? That ditch was supposed to be in the backyard and you dug it in the front yard. And this is the second time you've dug a ditch in my front yard. So, that's cool."

Well it's a good thing you played through a game twice, paying nothing to the devs. Good on you. Why give anything to the people who created something you liked enough to play through twice if you can just play it for free? Great job.

Since when does borrowing a game from a friend make someone a terrible person

Fair use is fine. But it's the entitlement that bothers me. "I played through it twice, so what do I care?" Okay, well then, pick up a copy, or purchase the DLC, or do something to compensate the people that worked on the product. Devs are not doing it out of charity, they have families to support etc etc. Who is anyone to take the product of someone else's sweat for free? It's just wrong.

Maybe so in most cases, but when I read an article like this I am going to lean towards at the very most renting it.

A truly good game should have enough content to justify a purchase. If I enjoy a game I rent or borrow, I buy it. This game is a rental at best or a desperate purchase for someone trying to justify their move purchase. The only people he screwed were Blockbuster (and by Blockbuster I mean whatever rental store that is actually still around in his area) and most rental prices are outrageous.

Can't they make more episodic add-ons now that they've integrated Move into Heavy Rain? What are the other bonus features?
No. David Cage said they had money for more episodes but Sony said they have to make a Move patch and didn't provide the funding. So they used the DLC money to ad Move support. The games budget is gone and they have already moved onto the next game they are developing.

Every chance I had to buy this game, I never took it. From everything I've seen of it, I couldn't stand the voice acting. I really enjoyed Indigo Prophecy though. For some reason I want to mention Alan Wake, but I won't.

Plus they'd have gotten boat loads of guaranteed cash from Sony for doing the Move edition. Sony were and are desperate for good games to use the flashy things.

The sales for the game didn't do so great so they canned the addition of any extra dlc for the game after the taxidermist release =(

What? Sales were fine as far as I know, way more than they estimated. I just got the impression that Cage had zero interest in doing DLC for the game and only did the Move stuff because Sony wanted him to and it actually had some gameplay impact.

EDIT: Ok it seems he had already written the story for the other DLC and wanted to do them, but he also wanted to move on to the next project and the DLC would've taken too much time after working on the move edition.

David Cage explained what happened in those blackouts and why Ethan woke up with origami in his hand. It wasn't a very good explanation but it was supposed to be explored in Ethan's DLC which never materialized.

Basically the gist is that Scott Shelby was there the day the Ethan's son died in a car accident and from that day onward had a psychic link with him as a result of their trauma. So in Ethan's blackouts he was experiencing Shelby's actions. Like I said, wasn't a good explanation.

Wow. I can, uh, I can see why they cut that out.

I loved this game. Every time I see a standard QTE I groan and wonder why nobody is using the blatantly superior QTE system that HR used. Anyways, I wish there was more stuff like this out there. Technically they don't even have to be games, but I found it's way of telling a story to be pretty enjoyable. Not quite a movie but not quite a game either.

As kind of less than great as some parts of the game were (mostly graphically and some animation stuff) I absolutely loved it. I already have the DLC thing that they released and I was incredibly bummed to find out they weren't doing anymore DLC. I'm kind of unclear on whether or not the director's cut of this game adds anything to the main game or not, but if it does, I'd be willing to pick it up and play through it again.

I honestly think they would have made more money by releasing more content than by putting in the bloody Move controller support. Honestly, if you already have this game, are you going to buy it again so you can wave a wand with a glowly light on it? And is there really a large audience of people who heard about Heavy Rain but who didn't buy it until now because they were waiting for motion controller support? The hype around Heavy Rain is LOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG dead - nobody cares about it anymore. What a great move - re-releasing a game so soon after the original came out, just with new controller support. Brilliant.

I didn't mind Heavy Rain, except for the incredibly stupid twist ending. Overall, I had some pleasant experiences with the game and I would have bought more DLC for it. I'm not buying it again. And few people would.

I probably could have worded that better. The first time I played it, I didn't enjoy it but I heard that part of the appeal of the game was the divergent paths the story could take so I decided to give it another shot. After the second playthrough, I realized that I still didn't like it so I probably won't be buying it even with all these added features.

And since when has borrowing games from friends become such a vile act? It's been a normal part of my gaming life for the past 15 years.

Hello- If released on the PC, I promise to buy it, a brand new shrink-wrapped copy. Has Sony so much to gain to have it released onto one platform only? It doesn't seem like it'd be able to move units on its own. Is porting this game so difficult?

Ah well.

Merci et vive la France. In the meanwhile I'm going to give Fahrenheit a try.
