Amazon Lists 4GB Xbox 360 S Console

It's good if you like 'em small.

An increasing number of disc read errors are making me consider tossing out my eleventh Xbox 360 since the console's launch. The Xbox 360 S, the sleeker, smaller, and supposedly less-prone-to-failure console, is the natural upgrade for me. But what if I don't want to get a unit with a behemoth hard drive?

Fat chance of that question occurring to me while in a Wal-Mart. I'm both realistic and a big-time data hog. But there'll an option this fall for prospective owners without these issues: the $199 4GB Arcade SKU of the S console

A recent leak on Amazon Deutschland (spotted by Kotaku) may have nailed down one of the most important questions we have about this version of the console. In the listing, it reveals simply that the Arcade will boast 4GBs of storage.

== TEASER ==If that space will be accommodated by flash memory or a hard drive is still unknown, and considering the surprise and early nature of this listing, it's possible that we could be looking at a fake. So, keep that in mind before you get too excited. I'll also note that the listing doesn't make mention of internal Wi-Fi or ports, including HDMI, which I've heard is the best way to connect the console to your TV.

So, yeah, carry on with your life. I probably didn't change it with this. If I did, I'm flattered, but you and I both know a 4GB S console isn't going to be your last purchase. Get the bigger hard drive version and go ahead and eliminate one of the reason you may have to re-buy down the road.

I'm with you. If you believe its a fake and you know no one is going to buy it, then why post it?

Can you install games on a usb stick? I know they recently made it so usb sticks are compatible but does that mean I can like install Mass Effect 2 on a 16GB stick and play it off my 360 or is it just for saves?

Nope. Microsoft has strict rules on that. They're afraid people are gonna use modded hard drives to cheat. Even if you're just trying to add your own bigger hard drive.

A 4G HDD would cost far too much to sell. A 250gb HDD is probably cheaper. It's integrated flash memory or they include one of those terrible X360 branded SanDisk thumbdrives.

Posted by WickedCobra03

You are aware that would be less than the original Xbox's HDD. :|

That is seriously embarassing.

Posted by MisterMouse

wow that is barely anything...

Posted by Jedted

Why would anyone buy a console with a 4 gb HDD?  Unless your REALLY conservative with what you download.

I geuss MS still thinks it can compete with the Wii by selling a cheaper version of their console.

Based on their previous hard drive strategies (Note: screw over 20 GB early adopters), I can see Microsoft making 4 GB hard drives that are juuust cheap enough for some uninformed consumers to think they're worth it.

That being said, I just bought a 4 GB flash drive the size of my thumbnail for under $10...

4GB for $200? No deal

Oh, I didn't realize there was an Arcade S system - which is entirely laziness on my part due to apathy. At least it will have some minor storage for people who rarely play games (like the casuals that only buy a couple sports games a year or something), but I was always planning on just getting a fat thumb drive for my next replacement 360 anyway.

I have 1 xbox.  I've only ever had 1 xbox.  Why would you go through 11. The people want to know!

Posted by Crono

I don't know where else to share this but here:

GameStop did that promotion where if you traded in your 360 you could get a big discount towards the new 250gig 360.  It just so happened that I was in the market for a new 360 right before E3 and with all the rumors swirling about a redesign I decided to bide my time.  Well they put up the deal and I went ahead and did it.

Now the reason I was in the market for a new 360 is cause my old one was broke.  It would only boot up for about 15 minutes before it would crash with a terrible sound and a bunch of fluorescent green and pink lines came across the screen.  My 360 was junk.  So I gave it to GameStop for a huge discount on a new one.  What made things better was that I had a 20 gig hard drive and they punched in for a 120.  The new 360 is super quiet too - here's hoping it is as fail-resistant as its been made out to be.

This is a butt article.

You are a butt, Brad Nicholson.

A butt and a dick.

I'm sure everyone else is also wondering how you go through 11 Xbox 360's, let alone how you can afford that many.

It would be a good move. There are still some Xbox 360 users that just play casually, and don't need that much room. Aside from that, I still think that 4 GB isn't that realistic, especially for $199. Maybe something like 20 or 40 GB would work better. Memory isn't so expensive these days, and 4 GB for that price is unreasonable.

Posted by one_2nd

i've had like four 360s, and I got it a year after launch.. I understand completely; but 4 gb is not enough.

Not a knock against the man, but I kinda figured this would be Brad Nicholson

4GB? *laughs*

Thank God, thank God, thank God. If this has wifi, I'm TOTALLY gonna trade in my old 360, buy this, and slap my current hacked 250gig drive in it. HDDHACKR for the win!

Posted by Dryker

Can you put your already-owned harddrive in it?
Posted by JJWeatherman

Obviously fake. Microsoft wants to push their digital distribution of games through Games On Demand as well as movies through Zune. This would hurt them in the long run since anyone who buys a 4GB system can't even download one game or HD movie.

@Dryker: nope different form factor

@JJWeatherman: That didn't stop them from having Arcade consoles with no harddrive for the past 2-3 years.

Oh it's been longer than 2-3 years. It wouldn't make any sense to continue that business model though with the things they have rolled out since. (Zune and Games On Demand)
Posted by YukoAsho
@max3000:  Why stop at one 16-gig stick?  I'd go whole-hog and get three of the bastards.  One for saves, one for XBLA, one for installs.  Non-Xbox-branded sticks are like $40 nowadays.

It'd make sense because they kept making Arcade consoles while they had those services out. And if they REALLY REALLY wanted people to use that stuff, then every single Xbox would have a 120GB and up HDD.

Plus the HDD's sold separately wouldn't cost two livers and a toe.

This article is completely believable. They want tiered things. One just so they can say "199 dollar XBOX".  And the current new Xbox.

Depends, do you have the new redesigned HDD model or are you talking about the old ones that go on top.

Sounds fairly decent enough for me. Not enough for saving games on the HDD, but that's not the point of the Arcade model in the first place.

Why does nobody in this topic understand that this is the arcade model?!

I disagree.

I guess we'll find out eventually.

As someone who has bought a 360S, I gotta say I'm real happy with it thus far. Still, this is neat but definitely not something I'd ever buy.

Not true. If you flash a laptop drive with the official Xbox HDD firmware, you won't be banned because the system can't see the difference. You start modifying files, then yeah, you'll be banned, but just adding a bigger drive is totally safe.

I'm not talking about slapping the whole shebang on there, I'm talking about pulling the drive out of the enclosure and slapping it in the Slim's.

Of course, in retrospect, it would be absurd to ship with a 4GB HDD but rather some type of flash memory, so chances are the new Arcade wouldn't even have a drive enclosure and therefore you'd need to get one off ebay or something. Although I'm still holding out hope that they release a Slim that has SOME sort of smaller HDD while still being <$300.

Brad if it is true you're probably going on your 11th Xbox360 then I am sorry to say but you're sad. After my third failure I decided to be done with 360 consoles and solely play and endorsed my gaming with Sony.

Posted by Skytylz

How are you on your 11th 360?  Do you keep em in an oven or something?

I have something here that says otherwise. I mean I'm all for doing what you want with your system, but Microsoft doesn't care.

That's not too bad a deal, especially if you have some spare USB thumbdrives lying around.

Posted by Dan_CiTi

4GB? Man I can see 10 or 20 or even 30 but 4? That's fucking nothing. I hope it is a mis print and is actually 40GB.

If you told me when I was buying my PS2 that the lead hardcore future console would fail 11 times....

and people still buy it.

Posted by captain_clayman

does it have HDMI and Wi FI still?

if so then i'm cool with that, although i'll probably end up getting the $299 version if i even get an xbox.

That's in reference to unauthorized Memory Units, as in Action Replays and other illicit shit.

Adding in a laptop drive is impossible for the Xbox to detect because A) It's the same brand and model of HDDs as the ones the 360 normally uses, B) It's using the same firmware as a real 360 drive and C) It is formatted on the Xbox itself. I know 3 people who added their own 250 gig drives to their 360s and have had them for over a year, myself included, and it works great. If anything, MS should support it because I've installed so many games and bought so many Rock Band songs and Arcade games that they've probably made $100+ on me alone.

For someone like me, who doesn't have a 360 and plays most of his games on a PS3, this is definitely appealing if I want to pick up exclusives. Plus if I decide to go mainly 360 or something I can easily upgrade the hard drive. "
That's a really good point, and I agree. The only worry is that those exclusive games might add up.
Posted by Afroman269

Well it is better than the regular arcade now but if the console doesn't have built in wi fi or hdmi then people should just get the regular instead of spending money down the road to upgrade.

Posted by beach86

Yeah, as MS move into the family market you dont have to be a genius to work out that somethink like this was in the making. Typical family usage will save a few games and perhaps buy 1-2 arcade classics that they used to play as kids. 4GB will be plenty to do this.

I money is on flash and this not being a fake.

Posted by Zalasta

As someone who doesn't download games or media at all 4GB is a joke.  I like to install disc games to cut down on the load and processing time.

The previous Arcade model (the one with the Jasper chipset) has 512MB of internal storage.

Still I am baffled at how you let Microsoft just bend you over and have its way with you.  If my current 360 dies then I am done, it will be my third and that is that. "
If I was on my 11th 360 and the first ten were replaced at no charge, then I could see sticking with it. I mean, you're acting like he bought every one of those 11 360's.

I'm gonna buy a new 360 when the Kinect bundles come out and, hopefully, they'll have a bigger HDD by then because my current 360 has a 250GB HDD and it's nearly full.
