American Game Designer Sentenced to Death in Iran for Alleged Espionage

An Iranian-American developer has been convicted of spying in the reclusive Middle Eastern nation, and sentenced to be executed.

The video game industry is rarely touched by real world political machinations outside of the usual slate of government content bannings, debates over how they impact our children, and the occasional detour into real world war scenarios. In this regard, today's news that American game designer and former US Marine Amir Mizraei Hekmati has been sentenced to be executed in Iran for crimes allegedly pertaining to his own profession is perhaps the single most incredible and sobering convergence of the video game industry and the very dangerous political world that exists just outside of our chosen hobby/profession we've yet seen.

Hekmati during his trial.
Hekmati during his trial.

Hekmati, an American-born designer in the employ of war game developer Kuma Reality Games, was detained in Iran during a visit last August. Not long after, an alleged confession by Hekmati was published in which he purportedly claimed he was in Iran specifically to help develop propaganda-based video games designed to "manipulate public opinion in the Middle East."

The confession then goes on to claim that Kuma is specifically contracted by the CIA to develop software aimed at pushing American policy in the Middle East region. Hekmati's confession continued on Iranian state television in December, where he further confessed to being assigned by the CIA to work as a double agent within Iran's own government by gaining their trust and providing false intel, while reporting back to the US government.

It's an insane-sounding accusation that the US government has repeatedly denied, citing Iran's frequent history of detaining Americans in the country and eliciting forced confessions.

Unfortunately for Hekmati, Kuma's history within reality-based gaming may have something to do with his conviction. Kuma's raison d'être was, for a number of years, focused on making the reality-based Kuma/War. That game has included a number of scenarios in which players could track down and kill infamous terrorists like Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Osama bin Laden. A recent entry in the series took place in Iran, and involved the country's controversial nuclear weapons program, tasking players with infiltrating a secret facility to destroy any such program.

For their part, Kuma has admitted to taking some contract work over the years to make training software for the US Army, but hasn't stated outright that Kuma, or any other projects the developer has worked on (which include games about everything from World War II to dinosaurs) were influenced in any way by the American government.

With Hekmati being found "Corrupt on Earth and Mohareb (waging war on God)," he has been sentenced to death. Because the American government has no political representation in Iran, the White House has called for Hekmati to receive legal counsel from the Swiss embassy, who represent American interests in the country. The government has also called for Hekmati's release.

We spend a lot of time when writing about the video game industry focusing on frivolous nonsense and reserving our concern and rage for relatively paltry consumer-minded issues, at least insomuch as they rank compared with the larger scope of the world's problems. It's times like these that make you realize exactly how minuscule the price of a new console or a piece of DLC really is in the grand scheme of things.

I heard that "a spy had been captured and sentenced to death", but I didn't know the spy was a game developer and that his crime was developing games. A sad truth of life in Iran and other oppressed countries.

Let him become a hero. Nice write-up, Alex.

Kidding aside, this is some hot stuff! Great article dude and hopefully the guy can get out of the shit he's in.

My parents lived in Saudi Arabia for 15 years, and I spent the first 3 years of my life there (we are lilly white Americans, FYI). In the 70's the Middle East was so different; my parents talk about how metropolitan the major cities where, and even though the overall society was still pretty conservative, they said it was more like being in a very conservative area of the US at the same time; you could have fun, and if you just showed people's beliefs respect, and everybody stayed out of everybody's way. We were forced out by the conservative revolution, but those reasonable people are still there, and are quite possibly the majority (look what is happening in Egypt and Libya). They live under a repressive system. They don't have free speech. They don't have reasonable leadership. Even in our little protective nest, it is important to be supportive of the people, even while we openly oppose an oppressive government. Ultimately, international outrage has saved lives in these circumstances. Use social media. Call your congress person. But please, don't be a Xenophobic asshole while you are doing it. Do it for a mutual respect for humanity, and hey, you might receive it in return.

There's not much the U.S. can do at this point. Iran's government is so far off the deep end, negotiations take years. Iran is bound to fall if it keeps antagonizing the U.S. and Israel and every Western power. I can't imagine anyone but Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his top agents knows just how weak Iran is in relation to the rest of the world.

Goddammit, I'm hoping for something incredible to save this guy. Anything.

"White People Problems" and all that. My one concern with this well-written statement that was clearly labored over is that it generalizes the concerns over our medium as a whole as "paltry". Certainly some squabbles over the difference between 10 and 13 dollars do get blown out of proportion, but there are instances of consumer exploitation for which we should be incensed.

Capcom releases a poor game for 60 dollars and then a few months later patches it and charges 40 dollars for a whole new disc. Microsoft charges 60 dollars for a peer to peer service and tells you that you're "getting more" then sticks you with countless ads, terrible interfaces, points-based economy, and maybe a few actual improvements over the competition that save the end-user 2 whole button presses.

These are things worthy of being upset over and typing out long forum posts over. This is the just the Internet after all. This story that you have posted above is worth going out of the house, speaking to congressman, writing actual letters, organizing rallies, etc.

It's important to communicate this information across the Internet, as that's it's main function, but as far as organizing for change: that's something that requires your physical presence. What I'm saying is it's fine to bitch on the Internet and "RAGE" over the insignificant things, but don't trivialize the event you're reporting on by stopping your interest here, on this webpage.

So...I don't know what this is for.

It harkens back to the hiker incident from a few years ago. Does executing this man truly make a convincing argument for the powers that be in the middle east? Does killing a foreigner of original biological decent somehow harm the thoughts and ideals of their own native people? I know it doesn't for anyone in the states because the only emotion to feel is rage towards something that seems so extreme for something so trivial; something that sounds so obviously fabricated. There's no figurehead here, no will of the people, no one knew this man's name yesterday and no one will remember it tomorrow. So why? Because it's easy?

I don't understand why things like this happen. No one benefits from any of it.

It sickens me that stuff like this can still happen. I mean it's 2012, you've had thousands of year to sort out your shit, come on Middle East.

What's the penalty for espionage in the US? And don't act like America is better than this because 'at least you'd get a fair trial': you've had people locked up without trial for about a decade now. It's a shitty way for countries to behave, but it's no less shitty when it's the US Government doing it, killing or detaining pretty much whoever they want, from any country they want, whenever they want (or just having Israel do it for them).

Which I acknowledged in my post. It's just unfortunate that all the US has left to fight with now is the strength of its arm - it was supposed to be so much more. If Americans seriously still think their government can look Iran in the eye and say 'How you're acting is beneath us' and have that be true then they are completely delusional.
