American Game Designer Sentenced to Death in Iran for Alleged Espionage

An Iranian-American developer has been convicted of spying in the reclusive Middle Eastern nation, and sentenced to be executed.

The video game industry is rarely touched by real world political machinations outside of the usual slate of government content bannings, debates over how they impact our children, and the occasional detour into real world war scenarios. In this regard, today's news that American game designer and former US Marine Amir Mizraei Hekmati has been sentenced to be executed in Iran for crimes allegedly pertaining to his own profession is perhaps the single most incredible and sobering convergence of the video game industry and the very dangerous political world that exists just outside of our chosen hobby/profession we've yet seen.

Hekmati during his trial.
Hekmati during his trial.

Hekmati, an American-born designer in the employ of war game developer Kuma Reality Games, was detained in Iran during a visit last August. Not long after, an alleged confession by Hekmati was published in which he purportedly claimed he was in Iran specifically to help develop propaganda-based video games designed to "manipulate public opinion in the Middle East."

The confession then goes on to claim that Kuma is specifically contracted by the CIA to develop software aimed at pushing American policy in the Middle East region. Hekmati's confession continued on Iranian state television in December, where he further confessed to being assigned by the CIA to work as a double agent within Iran's own government by gaining their trust and providing false intel, while reporting back to the US government.

It's an insane-sounding accusation that the US government has repeatedly denied, citing Iran's frequent history of detaining Americans in the country and eliciting forced confessions.

Unfortunately for Hekmati, Kuma's history within reality-based gaming may have something to do with his conviction. Kuma's raison d'être was, for a number of years, focused on making the reality-based Kuma/War. That game has included a number of scenarios in which players could track down and kill infamous terrorists like Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Osama bin Laden. A recent entry in the series took place in Iran, and involved the country's controversial nuclear weapons program, tasking players with infiltrating a secret facility to destroy any such program.

For their part, Kuma has admitted to taking some contract work over the years to make training software for the US Army, but hasn't stated outright that Kuma, or any other projects the developer has worked on (which include games about everything from World War II to dinosaurs) were influenced in any way by the American government.

With Hekmati being found "Corrupt on Earth and Mohareb (waging war on God)," he has been sentenced to death. Because the American government has no political representation in Iran, the White House has called for Hekmati to receive legal counsel from the Swiss embassy, who represent American interests in the country. The government has also called for Hekmati's release.

We spend a lot of time when writing about the video game industry focusing on frivolous nonsense and reserving our concern and rage for relatively paltry consumer-minded issues, at least insomuch as they rank compared with the larger scope of the world's problems. It's times like these that make you realize exactly how minuscule the price of a new console or a piece of DLC really is in the grand scheme of things.

Not sure if anyone said this yet, so I thought I'd just write what I know about this story to clear up a few confusions. Also, I'm not trying to defend Iran here, just trying to provide some background, because I think Alex's piece does a pretty poor job of putting this incident into context. Also, for what it's worth, I don't think that this kind of political reporting should be happening on GB, because, well, this is an enthusiast press video game site.

I think everyone should keep in mind that Iran is in a cold (almost hot) war with the US and Israel. Iran is surrounded on almost all of its borders by the US or US allies, is having their nuclear scientists assassinated (along with scores of innocent civilians) by either the US or Israel (or both), even though Iran does *not* have a nuclear weapons program (and the US and Israel do), is the subject of immense amounts of propaganda out of Washington (Clinton has said that they have a nuclear weapons program, though the UN has checked numerous times and has concluded it has no such thing) and, not so long ago, had its leaders deposed through a CIA backed coup, only for the Americans to institute a puppet religious zealot in their stead.

Just imagine what the US might do if Iran did this to them. Do you not think that the US would act against someone like Hekmati if he was Iranian, was working for a company with ties to the Iranian government, and was making video games about assassinating the president or blowing up the world trade center? Actually, look at what the US does to its *own citizens* when they suspect, but cannot prove, that they are "Terrorists": they assassinate them without any trial whatsoever (I'm referring, of course, to Anwar al-Awlaki). Or, they imprison them indefinitely without trial in Guantanamo or Bagram and torture them. At *least* Hekmati was given a trial and not just murdered or thrown in a hole to rot in Cuba.

The point is that this behavior by the Iranians is better (but by no means good) than what we do to people who we suspect are Terrorists. So as much as I wish that Hekmati would be released and have a chance to explain himself outside of an Iranian trial, we're certainly not treating our "enemies" any better. If you still don't believe me, compare the treatment of Hekmati to how the US treated a 16 year-old Pakistani boy named Tariq Aziz and his 12 year-old brother http://www.democracynow.org/2011/11/7/us_drone_kills_16_year_old .

This is why iran will never be taken seriously as a nation. Retarded, outlandish claims, like the two above, embody the problem with the corrupt religious zealots running the country. Those idiots are incapable of rational thought. They act out of ignorance and paranoia. That ignorance and paranoia will be their downfall.

FUCK YOU iran! The world will soon enough be tired of your shit, band together, and take care of YOU and other countries like you, the way we took care of iraq.

Way to go iran. The itchy butthole of the middle east.

Ok, the Iraninan govt is known to be full of shit, fine, no arguement. But is that so strange? What happened to fucking WMDs in Iraq and Osama is hiding in a fucking cave up a mountain in Pakistan. Or even a golden oldie, "Why of course President Reagan didn't know that we were selling guns to the Iranians and then using the money to train brutal torturing rapist terrorists in Honduras. Only I, Ollie North knew anything about that."

Totally fucking retarded bullshit imaginary claims come from all governments, at least the Iranians have an excuse, they're ruled by fucking crazy people. What excuse do Westerners have? Apparently we're a fucking bastion of democracy and all that bull shit, yet our populace laps up the most rediculous shit. In America all you have to do is say that its unpatriotic to question your governement and people will fucking believe anything.

I believe Alex's last paragraph was more of an editorial aside, to be taken as a qualifying note on the typical news stories that are generated from gaming websites. Gaming journalists don't typically get to write news stories like this and its a little bizarre and humbling to do it.

Just my take.

@014:Sorry about the assumption of you not being born in the USA. When you said "I am a US citizen", that particular phrase is usually used when one becomes a US citizen. "I was born a US citizen", "I was born in (insert town)", or not mentioning it at all is more commonplace for people born here. This is no excuse for my assumption, just how I came to it. My apologies.

Way to go iran. The itchy butthole of the middle east.

Two quotes from yesterday that impact my perspective on this.

"Iran hasn't invaded anyone. Who has dropped thousands and thousands of bombs...including atomic bombs?" - Hugo Chavez

"Our weapon is logic. Our weapon is culture. Our weapons are human values." - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Just pointing out that the first statement is undeniably true, Iran has no history of invading other nations whereas the United States, as you point out in your post, has. And the US did nothing positive for Iraq, watch "No End in Sight" for just the first glimpse of the impact your nation has had over there (that movie is four years old, sure its just gotten worse). The second quote just showcases how differently Iran perceives themselves compared to the way the Western media depicts them. The amount of press this one US prisoner has gotten is another element of the campaign to make the war crimes of the United States seem trivial in comparison. What if every single prisoner arrested in Iraq or in connection to the "War on Terror" with no solid charges received the same amount of press as this one man? The self-righteous attitude of the United States and other western countries (my home country Canada is no exception) really needs to stop.

Before waging war on anyone else, take a good long look in the mirror and make sure your side of the equation is sorted out. Spoiler alert, it isn't. Never is. So stop fighting.

The real problem is that he may very well be working for the CIA. We do not just put a person in a suit and print CIA on their foreheads when we send over someone to do human intelligence. Our CIA use military personnel often enough to make it more likely than not that he is CIA, and they would without a doubt use one that has an Iranian passport. I rather doubt the United States Marines overlooks the fact of one of their own held a second passport, or has family in Iran, or does military consultation for video games. I hope his case gets enough publicity so that they let him go.

People who immerse themselves in the games industry kind of live in a bubble as far as politics and world issues go, so seeing a story like this break through is sobering. What's even more sobering is that stuff like this happens far too often, whether we hear about it or not.

@Hardiharr I have no love for Iran, but I also don't have much love for "my own government" which lies to me at every turn. All I'm sayin' is that Iran has the right to detain this guy.

If an Iranian was mapping out Stratcom or the Pentagon and making video games about how to infiltrate those buildings, you better believe America would throw them into Guantanamo and throw away the key.

He should have just Skyped granny! Most people are smart enough not to go to a country with a government hostile towards theirs!

Lot of stupid things being said in the comments here. They're not the plucky underdog fighting the evil corporate oppressor. They're hoodlums taking a page out of Kim-Jong Il's book when it comes to brinksmanship and general dickishness.

I hope this guy gets out all right, just as I hope all the people that don't get into the headlines do.

I fail to see how being accused of espionage and creating propaganda against a region/government is religious, especially when Islam isn't what's being attacked in said propaganda.

Imagine a politically motivated assassination where the assassin was charged with "waging war on God", because of the name of the charge the situation has to be a religious one? That's just silly duder.

Is it just me or does Iran's version of this story, a story nobody except the accused would know the truth about, seem more logical than the story about a former Marine working for a company that makes propaganda video games for the C.I.A. just wandering into Iran to visit his granny and getting caught by Iranian officials.

For those that are flabbergasted by why someone would travel to Iran, he holds dual citizenship in both countries and is in fact an Iranian American.  According to his family back in the States, he was visiting his grandmother.

Possibly the most moronic post I've seen on GB to date. Never said the world was a pretty place, all I was saying was that what Iran does isn't really incomparable to what the US does. Done drinking that Kool-Aid or no?

@AgnosticJesus: No I'm not British, I'm Canadian; I tend use both the American and British spellings interchangably, really should settle on one. And yes, Canada has done some pretty nasty shit...that's exactly why I don't stand on a high horse and call out other countries governments unless I'm also willing to do it to mine (which I do). That was the point I was making, the fact that people here are acting like the US doesn't do comparable shit. They're also systematically ignoring the fact that Iran is the way it is due to decades of US interference in the country. Governments in general are shit; it's just that some are more shit than others.

Its not a matter of guilt in this case (and lets face it, they likely made him admit to something he didn't do), this is a man's life. Should he die for making video games?

This is certainly bad news. I feel sorry for the guy...this sounds really scary.

On that note, though, why are they making such provocative games in the least tolerant place in the world? Are they just asking for trouble? This whole thing could've been avoided if they were developing somewhere safer. Just saying. Not that Iran is justified in any way in their lunacy, but...c'mon, what did you think would happen eventually when playing with fire? You can push buttons in the US and other places, but not the Middle East.
