And Now... The Rest Of The Story

Jeff and John sit down on GameSpot's weird wrap-around green screen and address some issues that were long overdue.

Hey guys. So, in case you missed it, this is the video we broadcast at 4PM yesterday, where we discussed the business side of business, my past history with GameSpot, and some of your questions.

Tomorrow, with any luck, we'll start getting back to actually recording Quick Looks and, like, covering video games. Well, part of the time, anyway. The rest of the time will be spent getting lost on the 3rd floor of that building over and over again because everyone moved desks while we were gone. Thanks for watching.

I just hope giantbomb doesn't look like this next week:

Ahhhhhhhh... it just screams "we have no respect for you or what we are doing."

Lol WOW I never realized how bad the fucking advertisement really is. I use a shitload of add blockers so I rarely see any adds anywhere on the internet.

I'v been okay with the move so far, but if it turns GB to "THAT" I will have to stab someone........

sell out, with me oh yea, sell out, with me tonight

record company's gonna give me lots of money

and everything's gonna be all right

I don't think it'll be so bad

I know it won't be so bad

cause the man said "that's the way it is"

and the man said "it don't get better than this" no no no noo

so I signed on to the record company,

they say they're gonna give me lot's of money,

if I play what they want you to hear

they tell me it's cool, and I sure believe it...

Huh, I see zero ads on Gamespot. Also, you realize Giantbomb has ads right? If you aren't a premium member that is, if you are you'll never see them. Below is what I see at Gamespot:

Also, those Pot Pies look amazing and I wish I could see them for myself :S

Also @SpicyRichter: You do realize who the Giantbomb guys are right? Things are going to get MORE crazy, not less crazy. Did you see the size of that proper green screen? It has 2 chairs set up :O

I enjoyed this site because it is unleashed and the guys will say anything they feel because there's no 'big brother' paying the bills.

This has now changed. There is NO WAY this will continue under the heavy hands of a company like CBS. No matter what anyone says, the bombcast will change tone, quick looks will change tone, etc. Whenever management gets involved, creativity gets stifled. This always happens no matter WHAT people 'expect'.

When you get bigger you are expected to cater to a larger audience. This isn't really what giantbomb is about now is it?

I knew something bad was going on this week :( The changes at tested really excite me though!!

Oh, you know all this huh? It's good thing we have Giant Bomb's resident soothsayer to break this news to us.

Seriously, just shut the hell up. They haven't even been in the office for a day. The sky isn't falling. Not everything on the internet has to be some corporate conspiracy keeping the little guys down. Nothing is changing.

I'm a business man, I've seen entrepreneurs bought by conglomerates and have seen them lose their charm.

You sound like a really bad business man.

I've seen independent restaurants purchased by the conglomerate I work for, and despite my warnings, stripped out the culture of the business and replaced it with ours, only to see them fail a year later. They took a thriving small business, paid off the owners and killed it.

My bosses didn't understand what made the place successful- it wasn't just the menu or the location, but a careful balance of everything. Rather than retain what worked, they stripped it out and replaced it with something easier to control. A great business opportunity down the toilet. Bad business right?

You sound like you don't understand business, much like my bosses.

Right, but I'm hoping for some explicit confirmation. I think the GB community would probably be more supportive of the move back to Gamespot if we knew some figurative blood had been spilled as a direct result of Jeff's firing.

As soon as I saw "On The Spot" in the background my mind was flooded with images of Rich Gallup and Greg Kasavin. Fun times.

I've got the utmost confidence that the Giant Bomb guys will keep their integrity, I've seen and heard enough of them to get to know what kind of people they are and believe what they say.

Surprisingly I actually can't help but feel sorry for Gamespot. From their point of view this must be quite worrying. Imagine your bosses buying a new company that does pretty much the same job as you and then being told you'll be working in the same building with them. Almost seems like you're being replaced.

How?! Do you have the ad host domains forwarded to localhost or anything?

Gamespot has ads before video content as well... that would drive me nuts!

@evanbower: For all the people giving GB a bad time for going to GS, they should really watch the interview about Whisky Media being sold to who bought them. Seems like and comes out in interview that the people who bought Whisky Media really care only about the tech and their delivery system and even said how that can optimize their ad revenue.

Holy hell that's a lot better. Still, my point still stands, that KFC ad made me want to puke when I saw it. Call me oldschool but I really hate having advertising rubbed in my face. If gamespot is willing to do that to their readership, then it makes me lose respect for them, bottom line.

Yeah, I'm not down on the deal at all really. I'm confident GB will remain great. There is a weird conflict that takes place when GB is the first site I'd go to for game content and GameSpot is the last.. but I'm sure GB will continue doing what it does uninterrupted.

I used Gamespot for years, and then rarely visited after Gerstmann left with my own disgust of what happened, becoming loyal to the GiantBomb product. Peace at last... I still can't believe this has happened. It's like a movie sequel wrapping up the loose ends.

your example is nothing like what is happening to GB now, think about what your writing before positng. Just because ur example was a case of small company being bought by big conglomerate doesnt make it a parallel to this case.

A) most of these guys worked for the so called conglomerate before,

B) while working there they were doing mostly the same stuff, ( I would argue that the hotspot and rich gallup + GK + JEFF/Ryan era of GS was vastly superior to anything that GB has done)

Although not the same, a hypothetical case of something like Double Fine and Tim Schafer being bought by MS and given full rights to their IP and granted full autonomy (similar to Bungie at Activision) would be the more appropriate. And even a case like that does not take to account the nature of what the website does (focusing on the personalties of the editorial staff), existing relationships between people at GB and GS, and the past experience of Kane and Lynch fiasco + exposure of the whole thing to the Internent (their customers)

And as far as we know, the autonomy and integrity of the site was a key point in their negotiation (im sure its a term under their contract with CBS) another big divergence from your example.

Not sayin that GB is going to be 100% okay, shit will change for sure, and they might even become sell outs. But from what we know we can not come to that conclusion, and it is extremely unfair to the GB crew to do so. They have a proven trackrecord and should be given the benefit of the doubt, only time will tell how this will actually go.

"Typing Gamespot" click "Gamespot Giantbomb" Boom! "KFC, CAN YOU DIG IT! 3.99"

You know what, I don't think I can. My man crush is just not big enough. But congrats on the money, would have done the same 10/10

*Edit* bring Kasavin to the GB team, now that would make it OK

The case I've given is about a conglomerate going in and destroying the culture of a business and killing it's appeal because of a change in policy. Of course this case pertains; GBs appeal has always been the fact that they're independent, and that they're NOT gamespot, thanks to who the founders of WM and GB are.

The only error I've made is that the hypothetical hasn't happened yet. Only time will tell.

I trust Jeff and crew. I trust John Davidson from his 1UP days and I trust Ryan MacDonald from the good ol' days at Gamespot. This should be totally fine.

As long as there's a video tour of the new office where the Giant Bomb guys disrupt the work of the Gamespot guys.

The only error I've made is that the hypothetical hasn't happened yet. Only time will tell.

But that's really the key -- only time will tell. Keep in mind also that we're talking about two different worlds. These restaurant owners could simply be enticed by the cash being offered to them for their small thriving business, or frankly a whole slew of other reasons. I mean, hell, I currently work for a grocery chain that has had changes rolled out slowly over the past five years to ultimately change the nature of the inner workings of virtually everything there.

But these feel like two very different worlds. On one hand, we have a retail location, and on the other, a website that was birthed from a small blog as a project of love. Giant Bomb seems like it could have gone virtually anywhere, and the crew chose to migrate to CBS. These guys have worked tirelessly for five years to build up their fanbase, community relations, define the entire tone for their website and ultimately maintain integrity throughout. This is a group of what I can only call the most passionate of men I've ever known, and believing that they'd be willing to flush five years of work, of their lives, of blood and sweat and energy drinks, down the toilet, it seems downright absurd.

I approach with cautious optimism about this whole thing. These men have created something out of pure will and a desire to create quality, trustworthy content, and I'd like to believe that they will fight until their dying days to retain those principles in everything they do here.

But like you said and as I continue to believe -- only time will tell.

As I've been saying since this morning, I trust Jeff and the crew MUCH more than I trust whiny idiots on the internet who freak out over the weirdest crap. Giant Bomb with a bigger budget can only lead to more awesome things in my book.

DROP A BOMB ON IT.

But yeah, damn. It's a real shame about Whiskey Media, but most sites seem to be coming out of this okay. I pray for Screened, though.

I dont see why people are getting bent out of shape. GiantBomb aint going no place, all thats happening is they are moving office, getting better equipment and better funding. Jeff has made it perfectly clear that GiantBomb will remain as it is.
