Army of Two: The 40th Day's Preorder Bonus: A Whole Online Mode

Plus a look at the modes you'll get, no matter when you buy it.

The Army of Two sequel The 40th Day will ship next January with three multiplayer modes in the box. If you preorder it before its release, you'll also get access to an entire fourth online mode. That's right: no golden guns or goofy multiplayer skins here. The game's preorder bonus is an entire game type.

The mode is called Extraction, and it's a mobile four-player survival mode, sort of Gear of War's Horde mode on the run. You and your fist-bumping buddies stake out a preordained spot in the level, face down waves of AI enemies, and then move on to the next spot to fight even more. Here's a trailer showing off some Extraction, uh, action.

OK, let's ratchet down the sensationalism a couple of notches. For one, no specific retailer has dominion over the Extraction mode; if you preorder 40th Day from anywhere, you'll get it on release day. Also, it's only preorder-exclusive for the first 30 days, after which it goes out free to all players. So this deal isn't as gross as it first sounds.

I also got to try out the game's co-op deathmatch mode, which sounds like an oxymoron. To steal a line from creative director Alex Hutchinson, this mode is two vs. two vs. two vs. two vs. two (vs. two)--six pairs of players all fighting it out with each other, in other words. It's an interesting spin on team deathmatch, because you have one friendly player you can count on to get your back and revive you before you bleed out, but everyone else you see is an enemy.

There will be a few scoring bonuses factored into the gameplay based on this army-of-two setup. A couple of times during the deathmatch I managed to take out both players in a pair and got a bonus for eliminating a whole team by myself. Often you'll spawn right next to your teammate, but other times you'll find yourselves across the map from each other. At least there's a floating icon indicating where your partner is, so you can meet back up quickly. Unless, of course, your teammate is Aaron Thomas. Who would want to rely on that guy for covering fire?

There are a couple of other modes that split the players into two teams (but still have the sub-pairs within those teams). One is a capture-and-hold mode I tried called Control, and the other is Warzone, which I didn't get to see but will reportedly include "Destruction, Assassination, VIP, and Infiltration missions" all in one.

Control-wise, this ought to be totally familiar to anyone who plays third-person games like Gears; the one interesting trick I saw here was the "visual playbook" heads-up overlay, taken from the campaign, that lets you see enemies through walls and paints them with big fat targets when they round a corner. The 40th Day's core shooting feels good--the aiming seems tight and precise, and the enemies give a ragdoll-based sense of weight when they go down--but the early build we were playing had some frame rate and visual quality issues that I hope get smoothed out before the January 13 release. We're on deck to get a preview version of the full single-player game in the office later this year, so we'll give you more detail on how it's turned out in a little bit here.

Giving an extra game mode to people who pre-order is pretty gross but the whole 30 days thing isn't so bad. Still, why would you do that?

That can't compete with Game Crazy's:

Preorder Modern Warfare 3 and get an unlock code for access to weapons in single as well as multiplayer. That's right, you don't want to resort to fists!! Offer only available at Game Crazy.

Same here, a bit, even with all the protections against it. My problem with it is that after a month of not being available to everybody, people won't be interested enough in the game to make use of it. And even if you do pre-order, there's a limited audience with whom to play it.

I was fucking disgusted until you mentioned that everyone gets it after 30 days. Still a little exploitative, but it's not heartless. I feel sad that this is how they plan on making new game purchases lucrative -- through neutering.

Yeaaah this is pretty much bullshit. Seems like EA is getting back to their old form, since last years OH WE R AWESUM N MAKE NEW IPZ FOR U GAMERZ, to more of the corporate moneyhogging gremlin it's morphing into.

Their deal with Impulsedriven.com is US only, cause they don't want us europeans to get games for decent prices. I was planning on buying Dragon Age there, but now my money has to go to Direct2Drive (which I fucking hate) instead. Same price, sure, but why the FUCK can't I buy my games in dollars? Seriously.

Looks fun but when i found out there is still no PC version of the game i lost all interest in what they are doing with it. It does look like a very dick move though to do this mode as a pre-order thing. All it does is

  • Split the player base
  • Have half of said player base ignore the mode because they never had access to it from the start
  • Cheapen the online mode because sections are locked off unless you payed upfront
  • By the time the rest of people finally get access to it the online community will have diminished and you have lost a large portion that may have stayed around longer had they had access to it already.
  • It just generally leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth towards the game

These pre-order bonuses that effect the game in any way are just getting too ridiculous. When they take any content from a game and lock it off unless you do something outside of just purchasing the game then it is flat out wrong. Pre-order bonuses should be nothing more then soundtrack CD's, posters, books, little stickers or access to the game a few days ahead of every one else. I hope this trend ends soon, all it does is hurt the game and make people angry at the companies for doing this. When will EA learn that it is not ok to do stuff like this with their games? It seems like every major game they release they try doing some bullshit like this and it always ends badly for them and only hurts their game in the end.

@Brad:
On paper it feels and sounds like an excellent pre-order bonus. Being given something meaningful as a pre-order bonus like a game type over custom items or unique designs to weapons etc, like many games have, is great. But in reality it wouldn't feel like much of a pre-order bonus if in the 30 days it stays exclusive you're stuck with regularly having to wait long periods of time to find enough players to participate in the Extraction game type matches.

I'm all for games ripping each other off. Extraction and Co-op Deathmatch were both in Gears 2 and Warzone is ripped straight out of Killzone 2. Incidentally Killzone 2 is pretty much the only game to ever get me to play more than Team Deathmatch because their Warzone mode was pretty much the only thing to play in multiplayer.

BAM!  That's hitting the nail on the fucking head.  Thank you, VGK, for saying it before I did.

I think it's great that these publishers are trying to get people interested in NEW copies of the game, as well as pre-orders, so that they can actually see the money rather than the used game stores.  HOWEVER...if you are going to make it the pre-order bonus AN ENTIRE FUCKING GAME MODE...then it means that you are obviously fucking mental and need to be checked into the psychiatric ward.  Why?  It pretty much means you've gone batshit-crazy-drunk-with-power-and-stupidity.

I'm always creeped out by Horde modes in non-alien games. In Gears and in ODST's Firefight, you're gunning down aliens, and we all know aliens have no souls, therefore it isn't murder. But in Uncharted 2 and AoT, you're gunning down dozens if not hundreds of 'real' people.

Yeah, exactly. An entire game mode is a bit ridiculous, even though coming from Army of Two I expect garbage anyway...it needs to end, and has needed to for a long time.

okay, this game is looking a lot better than the first one, but it still kind of reeks of... i don't know, exploitation and douchebaggery. the multiplayer sounds great, for example, but only because they've ripped off other great games. warzone is taken from killzone 2 and the whole horde concept seems like it's gonna be in every third person shooter from now on. i guess, being primarily a ps3 player, it would be nice to have a horde-like mode. nobody really seems to play uncharted 2's awesome arena mode.

It helps to read the whole article.
Sure, it's not just a few days, but it's not like pre-orders get something the rest of us don't.

I have to wonder how many of the "these pre-order bonuses are out of control!" commenters actually read the whole article.
I know there are those who will still have issue with waiting 30 days for some content, but personally, this type of bonus bugs me a lot less than exclusive content (even if it is just something like a skin for a gun.)

Wait so let me get this right? This Extraction game mode is early access to a gametype? And after 30 days, the gametype becomes available to each other.

I used to feel the same way about buying new games to support devs, but when I get treated like this it forces me rethink my stance. You get locked out of a MP game mode if you don't preorder? Buying the game day 1 isn't enough anymore? You have to preorder now? I think it's become obvious to me that publishers don't give a rats ass about their customers. So I think I am going buy used games exclusively for awhile.

I hate to say this (as it might give EA ideas), but why 30 days of exclusivity? The game is titled, the 40th day, why not 40 days of exclusivity. That's the kind of cross branding (and pun branding) I would get behind, for this obviously shitty move.

The 40th Day still has a lot to prove to the Army Of Two franchise, so I don't think cutting off a game mode when it's not proven that it doesn't suck, is such a good idea.

this preorder bussiness is messed up. Gamestop has too much power now I mean, an extra skin or gun is one thing but when they can bassically say, preorder this or you lose half the game it starts getting insane. I purposely don't preorder games from them because one, I hate the idea of denying people features based on preordering or not and secondly I hate when you preorder something and they don't give it to you anyway because they make more money if they sell your copy to someone else and sell you yours later because you're already 5$ worth commited. Fuck gamestop.
