Assassin's Creed for a New Era?

Wedbush Morgan analyst suggests that Ubisoft is moving its jumpy-stealthy sequel to a new era.

Artist's interpretation
Artist's interpretation
I recently had the pleasure of taping an episode of Geoff Keighley's Bonus Round for Gametrailers, alongside Kotaku blogger extraordinaire, t-shirt tycoon, and admirably committed trucker-hat enthusiast Michael McWhertor and Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. This was my first legitimate interaction with Big Mikey P, and it confirmed my standing suspicion that he is a video-game information monster. He also knows all kinds of stuff that you and I do not. I think that--unlike your average member of the enthusiast press--his job as a financial analyst wouldn't benefit so directly from breaking specific details about upcoming games, so developers and publishers likely end up telling him all sorts of awesome secret business.

I myself, however, am a member of the enthusiast press, so I'll snatch up whatever breadcrumbs Pachter drops. During the taping of Bonus Round, Pachter let slip that Ubisoft would be changing the time-frame of the freshly confirmed Assassin's Creed sequel from 1191 to “several hundred years in the future” or more specifically, “sometime in the 1700s.” While the time change was presented by Pachter as fact, he went on to speculate that the French Revolution could be a potential setting. It's an interesting prospect, and like the original Holy Land settings, it's a time and place that hasn't been exhaustively explored by other games. I understand why people were hoping to see the series head to feudal Japan for some ninja action, but I personally find the mental imagery of an Altair surrogate wearing a powdered wig and being all “sacrebleu!” to be way more compelling. Whatever Ubisoft ends up doing, I just hope they can come up with a less anticlimactic ending for the sequel.

I don't know if I liked Assassin's Creed enough to play another one.... I would hope they'd do something to make it more than one cool thing.

Glad to see you getting out there Ryan, proving Jeff aint the only one ;)

As for Assassins creed, i love the idea! i personally was hoping for some medieval action, almost Robin Hood-esque sorta, but this seems still cool.

The idea of playing during the Terror, actually makes me really interested in Assassin's Creed; even though I hated the first game.

So Altair was the one who assassinated Napoleon by slipping Arsenic into his wine for several years?

If your going to photoshop Altair into the painting, atleast make him the same color as the damn painting =p

I still haven't beaten the game! I got it, CoD 4, Mass Effect all at the same time, and I was still working a bit on Bioshock, so I never had much time to play it. And I eventually got so frustrated by how easy it was to bump into ANYONE, and have guards on you when you had to sneak aruond for investigations. Can't wait for some more official stuff though! French revolution would be pretty cool, it could bring some relaly interesting things to the table.

Actually, Altair is the one who gave Napoleon that STD, so they'd treat him with arsenic.

That's kinda weak Jeff, Pachter told you guys a secret and you have to go telling the whole internet? :/   Interesting setting though if it's real. I hope it doesn't use guns now, it would probably ruin the gameplay.

I'd want a decent explanation of Assassin's Creed after the bad ending, before jumping onto a new test subject and a new ancestor's memories to unlock.

I loved this game, but it will continue from the cliff hanging ending of the original.

One of the best games of 2007. For me it was the best.

I enjoyed the first one even though it was flawed. I am looking forward to this and hope they have a better variety of missions for each level.

best idea ever!
Napoleon is Altair's grand, grand, grand, grand, grand, grand, grand, grand, grand, grandson (put thought into the grands 10 of them ca.600 years)
and the creed is actually the revolutionaries, and in the end you end up owning France.
Running through the streets with Napoleon. A gnome with a funny hat.
yey! viva la revolution !

Why, do people keep alluding to the Napoleonic era? Woldn't the "Terror" be a much more interesting setting, and far easier to center an actual game around?

The French Revolution Period is much more well known than 10th century MidEast. I don't see where they'd insert the character. Being an assassin felt right in the first game, but the revolutionary period is more sophisticated and less exotic. I don't see this happening.

Japanese ninjas is much better.

but, there is definitively more blending under the revolution than in 1700 century Japan.
and as a matter a fact 6 people where actually assassinated by an unknown assassin during the revolution.

Assassin's Creed 3. It's now present day, and your character reveals that he wanted to be captured and put into the animus. It was the *only* way to get close enough to the *real* enemy, and make the big kill. With this assassination... you'll finally end the war!

You heard it here first folks.

This is great news!  Maybe we'll finally find out everything Abstergo was planning.

Although Altair probebly won't be the main character that doesn't mean you won't still play as Desmond in the future and play as one of his other ancestors while in the animus.

I also thought of the "Terror" when i first read this story. It fits in with the themes of revolution that the first game contained.

That sounds badass...it as always rumored that the sequal would be in another time-frame, but everyone assumed it would be in the far-future of the "real-world" sequences of the original.

I wasn't "hoping" for a feudal japan setting- in fact I don't like ninja ideas... feels overdone... despite not being done much- its just the last game set itself up so well for it mentioning Yona Guni (a feudal japanese place) and all. Aswell as time and circumstances of this. I'm surprised they would go in another direction after leading up into another with the last. Its almost like its lost Unity with the transitional elements of the end.

Finally!  This is the news I've really been waiting for ... even if it's just rumour at the moment.

Completely agree with Duke Togo's comment - a great immersive world which I loved the first time round, but the changing of the character's garb (even with a similar basic character) will be a big thing - will they be able to maintain the continuity having made Altair so iconic in the first game?  I was with Jimbo in thinking it could be South America around the time of the Mayans or something (based off of the runes you see at the end - though maybe that was just generic allusions to the depth of the Templar conspiracy).

The problem with Mayan/Aztec civilization .......  not too many densely packed settlements for good rooftop travel, same goes for the middle ages for those people wanting that period.  1700s France though could be perfect for that.  Political intrigue, soldiers in the streets - sounds a plausible and really interesting setting to me.

Thrawn, Assassin's aside, considering that combat in Creed is one of the things that makes it great, the French Revolution fits quite we'll. Also, who's to say that we won't still be playing as Altair and Desmond? I'm curious as to what the artifact has done to Altairs mortality... And what will happen to Desmond.

lol, I'm getting flashes of The Highlander...

That is great news. Imagine being chased by a handful of French Imperial Guard with muskets. :D :D :D

Or, sitting on a roof with a musket waiting for a target to come by.

This would be a welcomed change for me.

French Revolution is a great idea, or even the Russian Revolution.
