Assassin's Creed for a New Era?

Wedbush Morgan analyst suggests that Ubisoft is moving its jumpy-stealthy sequel to a new era.

Artist's interpretation
Artist's interpretation
I recently had the pleasure of taping an episode of Geoff Keighley's Bonus Round for Gametrailers, alongside Kotaku blogger extraordinaire, t-shirt tycoon, and admirably committed trucker-hat enthusiast Michael McWhertor and Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. This was my first legitimate interaction with Big Mikey P, and it confirmed my standing suspicion that he is a video-game information monster. He also knows all kinds of stuff that you and I do not. I think that--unlike your average member of the enthusiast press--his job as a financial analyst wouldn't benefit so directly from breaking specific details about upcoming games, so developers and publishers likely end up telling him all sorts of awesome secret business.

I myself, however, am a member of the enthusiast press, so I'll snatch up whatever breadcrumbs Pachter drops. During the taping of Bonus Round, Pachter let slip that Ubisoft would be changing the time-frame of the freshly confirmed Assassin's Creed sequel from 1191 to “several hundred years in the future” or more specifically, “sometime in the 1700s.” While the time change was presented by Pachter as fact, he went on to speculate that the French Revolution could be a potential setting. It's an interesting prospect, and like the original Holy Land settings, it's a time and place that hasn't been exhaustively explored by other games. I understand why people were hoping to see the series head to feudal Japan for some ninja action, but I personally find the mental imagery of an Altair surrogate wearing a powdered wig and being all “sacrebleu!” to be way more compelling. Whatever Ubisoft ends up doing, I just hope they can come up with a less anticlimactic ending for the sequel.

I have mixed feelings about this. A new setting would be great, but I thought Ubi left the world of AC very much unexplored.

They put a lot of work in making that world look as good as it did, and I thought they didn't fully utilize it.

lol, I'm getting flashes of The Highlander..."
I love this post.

It gives me hope that Altair might actually stick around.  Probably the best thought I've had all day.

There's a lot more to change than just making a less anticlamactic ending for me.

Why not put less focus on the climbing which, by the end of the game was tedious and just plain boring. The story and narrative of the game should be more linear, as their 'open world' was just a boring space filled with people with annoying voices which it didn't help to do anything but want to stab them in the neck. Pleeeeaaase Ubisoft, make your next game less crap.

I hope they do it right this time. AC was terribly loose on the actual history.

I still want at least one of the games in this trilogy to be set in the modern day, we need to continue the story from the first!

I'm going to remember this post when AC2 comes out and we'll find out that it involves cavemen and stealth bone club action.

As long as the missions aren't repetative, I LOVE the universe Assasin's Creed has created and don't care what timeline they use.  Still just for the fact the "real" time line is still set in the near future it can give a large forgiveness to whatever or any past timeline given.  Everything from the past is presumably tied into what will be AC3 and those pasts tied into our future.  The first game was done so very well if it wasn't for the repetative missions and worthless flag hunting.  Cross my fingers its better the second time around, still its a good universe regrdless.

Since I played AC I just can't wait for the sequel. It's very interesting that they're changing the setting to this period in history. I'm buying it on day 1 :)

I'd be really interested to play a new Assassins Creed.  If they put in a decent amount of stuff to do, unlike the repetitive original, it would be awesome.

The first Assassin's Creed is one of the best game on Xbox 360 and I expect the second one to be nothing short of that.

I don't see any reason not to expect 16th century feudal Japan. There were clear hints that the sequels would involve South America and Japan.

I'd say it'll take place in the caribbean and the new player character would be dressed like a pirate. This way if they were going with mulitpule cities again they could have them on seperate islands and have the player travel between them via a big pirate ship that the player is the captain of.

Great choice of setting.  The Napoleonic era is not something you see too often in action games... too often relegated to RTS.  I demand accurate musket usage and physics though!

Surely accurate musket usage is against the laws of physics ^^

With no silencers around a good backstab would still be preferred primary method of assassination in this time period I reckon.

I always assumed we would see at least one more ancestor (Desmond obviously being the link throughout the series) before we see Desmond's own game.  I'm happy with any era so long as it isn't Ninja-land (done already) and so long as they don't switch from primarily melee combat to ranged combat.

Could Desmond possibly have a Templar ancestor in AC2, so that you have no defined 'side' in AC3?  Or are the Templars already too set as 'The Bad Guys'?

I know most people didn't like the story of AC, but if they would tell another chapter in that story, and just change the gameplay to suit the timeframe, that would be pretty rad. I'd prefer to see a sequel that continues the story, then a sequel that continues the gameplay. That would be unique, for a change..

I predicted Creed 2 to be in an oriental setting due to the oriental building drawn in blood in the end and there is a name of a dynstay ruler at the end of the game.

I can see how this one will be so much better, ubisoft are pretty good at improving past mistakes, so yeah!
This could be awsome instead of repetitive to the extremes of me sometimes waking up and finding that my 360 is still running and altair has just been standing in a particular location for 3 hours straight doing nothing lol.
Anyway, to the people who think altair is the main character again. Umm, HELLOOOO! the time periods are so far apart that if altair's offspring was the main character then that character would call Altair his great-grandadx5 or something, lol.

No matter what time frame they have it set in, they need to continue to elaborate on the modern era part of the game as well, and not leaving it hanging, and maybe try to make some sense of all that Eagle Vision nonsense at the end of the game. Also at some point, I would love to see a modern version, with Desmond, somehow becoming an assassin by unlocking all the knowledge within him.

I'll admit that when i saw the mixed reviews for the first game i didn't think too highly about it but after i played it myself i saw how compeling the story is and once i finished it i couldn't wait for the sequel.  Glad to see it's actually in development and that they're changing up the setting to keep in interesting.

While the animus bits will probebly be totally new i hope they continue to expand on everything you learned in the present day about the modern Templars.  And also learn more about the previous test subjects who went into the animus before Desmond.

This franchise is golden, considering the "technology" that the game is based on, you could have any time period and any genre mechanic. How about taking it back to the year 0020. Jesus H Christ is the final boss - Controversial? HELL YEAH!

I agree, one where you play as Desmund would be the best, since they kind of forgot to finish the story in the first, one, or so it seemed. Its like, "Hey, you can has magical assassin vision, there is special words everywhere, and this evil dude is going to take over the world kthxitsover."

There is so much stuff that happened in the 1700s, French Revolution, American Revolution, The Great Northern War, The Carnatic Wars, The 7 years war. Hopefully they get rid of some of the repetitive gameplay and we should have an awesome game!

Like a lot of people, it didn't take me long to realize that I was doing the exact same thing in different - but indistinguishable - cities. Less a sandbox game than a "look at me crawl on buildings!" novelty on rails. Yeah, hopping around rooftops was a curiosity for a couple hours, but that in and of itself is hardly "gameplay". And once that wears off, it's just a half-assed game. The only thing Assassin's Creed truly had going for it was a hot producer chick (Jade Raymond).

If I hear good things about a sequel and I can find it used for around $20 after awhile, I might give it a chance. Otherwise, I'm going to just assume it's a derivative piece of crap from an over-hyped piece of crap."

Totally disagree, but have stated why so many times now, that I don't feel like saying it again.

I vote Christopher Lambert as Altair.  Assassin's Creed would be a shoe-in for Game of the Year, then.  Haha.
