Atari Announces Dungeons & Dragons Daggerdale For Spring 2011

A downloadable hack-and-slash that centers around the struggle to defeat "the evil Rezlus and his Zhentarim."

Hey, guys, do you want to take part in the epic struggle "to defeat the evil Rezlus and his Zhentarim" in the Dungeons & Dragons universe? Great! You'll get to do just that Dungeons & Dragons Daggerdale, a downloadable hack-and-slash title set for release in Spring 2011 on XBLA, PSN, and PC.

Scratch: The Ultimate DJ developer Bedlam Games is the creating this next D&D title, which is said to support both online and local co-op for up to four players. Publisher Atari's page on the game confirms the usual fantasy stuff for Daggerdale. Expect underground lairs, magic casting, loot, quests, a deep character creation component, and a "riveting narrative."

Perhaps the most important detail we've learned since reading over the press materials is actually not mentioned in the press materials at all. Daggerdale will have skeletons. The evil, walking kind. Get your first look in the trailer just below.

Daggerdale is an absolutely awful name.

I realize it's an actual location in Forgotten Realms, but it's still an awful name.

It sounds like a town in fallout where everyone fights with knifes.

Wait. Atari still matters?

At first I thought that it would be stupid to do an action game unless it was Neverwinter Nights. Then I thought about Dark Alliance. Now that was a good game.

Remember when D&D was a really great video game franchise?

Posted by Karkarov

Well the original adventure module this is probably based on was fun enough so maybe I will give it a look when it comes out.  Sure seems to have plenty of skeletons in it so that makes it a winner yes?

If the loot is good, I might be interested.

Daggerdale sounds like a happenin' town.

Alright, count me in.

Daggerdale? Its like they're not even trying . . .

What about Dagerfall, Dagger Springs, Dagger Isles, or Daggeringston? =)

If it's $10 I could see me picking it up.

Hope the gameplay makes up for the meh trailer...

I love D & D so hope this holds up...=)

*casts +5 spell of hope* >_>

I wanna meet that town.

Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights?

That being said, this doesn't look too bad.  Seems to be a typical Diablo style action RPG affair, looks a lot like Dark Alliance games and I've been waiting for something like this to come to XBLA/PSN for a long time.  Trailer wasn't particularly exciting, but if it's handled right, it should be good.

Well, I do. Baldur's Gate II, etc.

Given how many skeletons I've killed in D&D games in the past, I sure hope this one has a wider variety of enemies than the 2.5 (flaming skeletons, while cool, are still skeletons) that I saw in this.

Thats a really bad name

@maxB:  Not if you know the setting of Daggerdale.  I do and I am excited for this.

Neat. Co-Op?

Looks inspired and interes...actually, never mind...I was thinking of something else D:

Posted by thetrin

Daggerdale sounds like a toothless old prospector who threatens trespassers with a small pocket knife.

"Don't mind him. That's just ol' Dagger Dale."

Posted by CactusWolf

Uh... Daggerdale?

Posted by TimFReilly

Looks about as bad as a trailer can look.

Posted by Poki3

Maybe I'm expecting too much for a "downloadable title", but I hope it does the D&D system justice and has GM options.

Armed to the teeth with plasma weaponry?

to all the people complaining about the name "Daggerdale."
did you see the trailer? the name is the least of this game's troubles.

Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale: Dddddddddddddddddd

Posted by Ravenousrattler

sounds like somethin i would pick up

Posted by TheChaos

The expansion will be called Swordburg. Followed by another named Bowvale.

Posted by ryanwho

Its dogtime in daggerdale.

Posted by ArbitraryWater

For a second, I thought it said Daggerfall. Oh, and remember when Dungeons and Dragons was a game license to be respected?

Posted by Teaspoon83

i enjoyed the Dark Alliance games so if they can nail that, great for them. But part of me thinks they are just trying to get this out the door. The last D&D licensed game was back in 2006 with Neverwinter Nights 2 and Hasbro has been demanding that they get the license back from Atari. So why not just slap something together quickly to show Hasbro that they still are using the license. May not be a great game but it is a game.

Crazy conspiracy thoughts but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Posted by kitsune_conundrum

not the kind of dnd i was looking for.

Posted by FalcomAdol

I wonder if this is just a downloadable console game using the Stormreach engine.

My understanding is that's a multiplayer instanced online game...I haven't played it, I guess it's free now?  Maybe I should check it out?

Posted by Robopengy

Boring combat? Add in some 360 degree camera pans! That'll do the trick!

Posted by kalmis

Hack&slash ala Diablo/Torchlight but with D&D rules? Sure sign me up

Posted by owl_of_minerva

More like Daggerphail, lolol. Looks like a terrible abuse of the license.

Somebody get to Bedlam's offices, kidnap one of them, and not the fucker go until you figure out what the fuck is going on with Scratch.

Posted by arca
@DXmagma: and they are all named dale!
Posted by Grnd_Lb_Knt

Looks neat. I'm not aware of much in the way of co-op like this. Especially non-iso 3rd person hack and slash.

Posted by TheMartino

I really like how Bedlam is making this. Glad to hear try haven't shut down. They did a lot of work on Scratch and it kinda went nowhere. If this was Activison they would likely be dissolved.

Bravo to Atari

Posted by TheMartino

Also this makes me want Tower of Doom and Shadows over Mystara to be released on XBLA/PSN.

Despite being capcom owned.

Looks cool. Terrible title, though.

Skeletons you say? My god, I don't know if I can handle such a progressive move in videogame design. Funny article for what is a reaaly boring announcement so far.
