Atlus Picks Up Game of Thrones For Early Next Year

[Insert winter is coming joke here]

Atlus has picked up the rights to publish Cyanide Studios’ action RPG simply titled Game of Thrones, an action RPG based on HBO’s show and with a brand-new story from author George R.R. Martin.

Players pick two original characters, described as “former soldiers of Robert’s Rebellion,” and will reportedly take place over 30 hours.

You won’t have to wait long for Game of Thrones, either, as Atlus has scheduled the game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in early 2012.

Let me sing you a song of Ice and Fire, about how I never have to stress about that comment quest ever again! Forsooth!

Do we have to wait 5 years for a sequel?

The only game where choosing the "good" path will get you the "bad" ending (IE: you'll probably wind up dead in a ditch).

Hopefully it's significantly better than Game of Thrones Genesis. A Dragon Age style RPG is just the right fit though, if they can pull it off.

Oh man, fingers crossed in hope this is better than the RTS they released last month.

Also, fantasy RPG is suddenly a very popular genre with this, Dark Souls, Skyrim, Reckoning and Dragon's Dogma all being released within 6 months.

With Atlus I am very excited. But my dreams of the seven kingdoms united once again under Targaryen rule have been dashed. Hopefully one of the soldiers will be Ned Stark. If I cannot rule as a dragon , then the dire wolf is the next best thing.

It's the same developer as the previous game? That's disheartening. Especially since they are going to pump it out so fast. Why does Atlus pick up these games to publish?

Cyanide Studios? Those are the dudes that make Pro Cycling Manager. Weird.

Well the screenshots look decent but middleware these days can do wonderful things. Now one can be apprehensive that this is being put out by Atlus instead of HBO's corporate cousin Warner Brothers Interactive.

@ttocs: It was developed concurrently with the RTS. Take that how you will.

@Nightriff: Well, DA:O was directly inspired by GRRM's work, so yeah. I avoided DA2 so I don't know specifically what went wrong with it.

Yep, between this game, the books and the 2nd season of the show, I could be a very happy Game of Thrones fan.

Oh, Game of Thrones... The more I think about the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books the less I like them. The game may be good now that Atlus is developing it.

To anyone who has read all the books, is ASOIAF worth finishing? im on book 2 and its pretty great but i have heard mixed opinions on later books, is it worth reading them all?

@endaround: Warner doesn't have exclusive rights to the franchise. The rights for the games were picked up before the HBO series was.

No, I know. But this sounds like its coming off the TV rights as separate from the book rights (even though Martin is providing a story) because HBO is going to be providing assets for use in game. Yes this may have FMV. So its sort of strange that WB isn't also publishing. Now it could just be that WB doesn't have room in its schedule.

I watched the TV Show and decided to read the books so I bought the 2nd and the whole 3rd. Read the 2nd, 3 part 1 and 200 pages of part 2. Yes, I gave up... the writing style of the author got on my nerves. The books aren't without flaws. I would classify them as " very unpolished gems".

Edit: Oh, I read the plot summary on Wiki for book 3 part 2, 4 and 5... I'm glad I didn't buy 4th and 5th. Time and money not wasted.

It was known it was being made, that Atlus was publishing came out in USAToday yesterday leading to a press release today with a vague release period.

Why is the playable character in the adaptation of an awesome movie always a fictional NOBODY made up for the game? 
 
I wanna play as NEO in The Matrix, as FRODO (err) in LOTR games, as STARK in Game of Thrones, not some fucking unknown soldier.
