Author Tom Clancy Dies at Age 66

The man and brand behind numerous military-oriented novels, movies, and video games, passed away yesterday.

Tom Clancy: 1947 - 2013
Tom Clancy: 1947 - 2013

Numerous reports have today confirmed the death of best-selling author Tom Clancy. Clancy reportedly passed away on Tuesday at a hospital near his home in Maryland, following a brief illness. He was 66.

Clancy was best known for his numerous military-themed novels, as well as the blockbuster films that spawned from them, including The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger. His prolificacy and success combined to make him a ubiquitous figure and brand within the literary world.

That brand extended into the video game industry in 1996, when Clancy co-founded Red Storm Entertainment alongside Doug Littlejohns. Red Storm produced multiple Clancy-branded games--including Politika and the earliest games in the Rainbow Six franchise--before the studio was sold to Ubisoft in 2000. Red Storm continues to exist, and has served as the primary developer on the Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon franchises. Clancy's name has also been attached to Ubisoft's Splinter Cell, H.A.W.X., and EndWar franchises, as well as its upcoming game The Division.

Though Clancy likely had little direct involvement in the development of those games, his name will forever be associated with these franchises, and likely numerous future franchises as well, as Clancy sold the rights to his name to Ubisoft outright in 2008.

"We are saddened to learn of Tom Clancy’s passing and our condolences go out to his family," a representative from Ubisoft wrote on the company's Facebook page this morning. "Tom Clancy was an extraordinary author with a gift for creating detailed, engrossing fictional stories that captivated audiences around the world. The teams at Ubisoft, especially at the Red Storm studio, are incredibly grateful to have collaborated with and learned from him, and we are humbled by the opportunity to carry on part of his legacy through our properties that bear his name."

Eagerly looking forward to the next Ghost Recon where we'll be able to spot the ghostly visage of Clancy once per level just like the hidden wedges of cheese in Perfect Dark.

66 is pretty young. I read a few of his books. Some were better than others. I liked Red Storm Rising the best. Debt of Honor, written in 1994 had airliners used as weapons. I read that book in 2003. He has certainly contributed to my enjoyment of military fiction and FPS shooters. Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear was my favorite online game back in the early days of XBox Online. Those one-shot-one-kill games were great fun.

Just bought Blacklist to help honor and remember him. Also because it's supposed to be pretty good, and never mind that he (I think) didn't actually have any input on this one.

Have not read one of his books for many years. But that an established author of his generation steps into videogames deserves some serious respect.

He will be missed.

RIP Mr. Clancy

@thatthomclancy: Sorry for your loss man. Your father was an influence on me with his books and the video games/movies that came from them.

I truly enjoyed his good books, and I was generally entertained by his less stellar entries. RIP Tom, the sheer volume of material you produced is an impressive feat and legacy.

Also seriously the Rainbow Six novel is basically the worlds best written longest/stupidest/greatest action movie. The villains, their motive, and their plan are just too much fun. It's refreshingly abnormal even if it isn't all that grounded.

Ugh, 2013 just sucks. Worst year, all years.

I was thinking the very same thing yesterday after having my cat put to sleep.

This news isn't doing me any favors either. I was a complete nut for Clancy's books back in the 90's and early 00s. I can remember reading Red October in 8th grade and having my brain blown out the back of my head when I saw how absolutely perfect it translated to film. I've always been a sucker for good political thrillers, and Tom Clancy is without peer.

One ping only, Mr. Clancy. One ping only.

R.I.P, condolences to all his friends and family.

I'm behind Giant Bomb having a tribute stream to him, that would be pretty cool.

I have a lot of Tom Clancy novels, but I've only read two of them. While I didn't hate them, they're just too long with extraneous information.

I like the concept of reading them all, but I don't have the will power or attention span to read 800 page books anymore.

Man, no way. He was a ["PROLIFIC" FORMERLY HERE] writer, and while I haven't read any of his books they've certainly become some excellent movies.

He didn't write those. The last book he ever wrote was Teeth of the Tiger, everything after that was "created by" Tom Clancy but written by other people. Anyway, this is definitely sad news indeed.

I never did agree with the guy's political views, but I fucking loved his writing. Really sucks to see him gone. RIP.

I wonder if Ubi will drop the "Tom Clancy's" from their games like Codemasters did back when Colin died.

Doubt it. I'd imagine the Clancy games are netting them a lot of money.

well this proves me wrong.

I was under the impression that Tom Clancy or TC (Thinking Computer) was a top secret project built by US based Laboratories running out of area 51 and was designed to predict future scenarios.

Never read any of his books, perhaps I'll get round to rectifying that now. I've enjoyed the majority of games published with his name attached.

I never read any of his books, but I played many of his games. I absolutely loved the first Rainbow Six. I didn't realize he was so young. Its a tragedy to lose someone so prolific in pop culture, especially at his age.

I appreciate that his novels lead to video game franchises like Splinter Cell and the Rainbow Six series. Seems like his son is determined to continue the legacy, so those type of video games won't end, hopefully.
