Bastion Getting Free DLC Everywhere But Xbox 360

Stranger's Dream add-on includes two game modes, and a new "Who Knows Where."

No Caption Provided

When you think about some of 2011’s best downloadable games, Bastion immediately comes to mind, and if you’ve been hoping to scratch that itch again, Supergiant Games has what you need.

On December 14, Supergiant Games is launching the Stranger’s Dream downloadable content, which includes a new “Who Knows Where” section, complete with new voice overs, and two new modes. Score Attack Mode starts players at level one with all spirits and idols unlocked, and No-Sweat Mode is the equivalent of very, very easy--you can continue where you die.

Stranger’s Dream won’t cost a dime on PC, but you’ll have to pay $1 on Xbox Live, as Microsoft has some very strange, inconsistent policies when it comes to offering free content on its service. Supergiant Games alluded to wanting to make the content free in its announcement post.

“The Stranger’s Dream DLC will be available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) on XBLA, which we can’t make free due to Microsoft policy, so it’s about as close as we could get,” said the company. “Though, since you’ll be getting a good chunk of new content, we think you’ll be satisfied with your purchase.”

That content will also come to the Google Chrome, which may come as a shock if you haven’t heard that Bastion is also fully playable through Google Chrome now. Yes, the browser! It means Mac owners can check out this spectacular action RPG. That version is available right now, and if you want to see how well it does/doesn’t work, you can play the prologue for free.

@Grimluck343: I'm not suggesting that this is one of the most egregious policies ever practiced by a business in the history of capitalism; I'm just saying that it's really silly, and I can't believe that some people (you, being among them) are positively furious over the fact that someone exists to actually stand up and let people know about them.

I understand if people don't like Patrick, I wasn't his biggest fan at first either, but his style of journalism is a million times better than the rest of the pandering garbage that's dominated the video game industry's enthusiast press for over a decade.

Surely you can agree that Microsoft forcing game developers to charge for content they don't want to charge on is dumb. How, then, is it ever going to change? If people raise a fuss about it, and people with the ability to actually be heard, complain about it. Microsoft may be forced into changing their policy. The same goes for EA's policy of banning people from games, or maybe even Sony's ridiculous UMD cash-grab program. When people are better informed and vocal journalists are complaining, it creates an uncomfortable amount of spotlight that maybe just maybe would force a business into making a more consumer-friendly business decision.

I can understand people disliking Patrick, but that's an honorable goal that the increasingly over-charged consumers of society in general could use more of. (And for the record, I wasn't comparing this, or you, to terrorism. Just the type of people pissing on Occupy Wall Street-esque movements that amusingly end up taking the side of businesses over the incredibly stressed lower classes of society.)

Hey. Here's a great idea: Do what you do when people try to nickel and dime you: Shut the hell up about it and keep walking. What the hell is the point of any of your rebuttals? Why do you give a shit if this angers anybody if you don't give a shit that it's just more forced shitty policies? That's so horrendously oxymoronic that I think I just made up a word.

If you ignore us, nothing bad happens.

On the flip side, if WE ignore THIS, then we encourage it, and potentially make things worse for ourselves.

So you're the only one here complaining about shit that doesn't matter, Jesus fucking Christ.

Hey. Here's a great idea: Do what you do when people try to nickel and dime you: Shut the hell up about it and keep walking.

Can you honestly tell me that every time you get nickled and dimed (and you do on a daily basis, it's part of life), you throw a big temper tantrum in the name of protecting consumer rights? Or do you just talk like this on the internet?

What the hell is the point of any of your rebuttals? Why do you give a shit if this angers anybody if you don't give a shit that it's just more forced shitty policies? That's so horrendously oxymoronic that I think I just made up a word.

Because people are angry at me for not being angry. I'm pretty sure oxymoronic is a word.

If you ignore us, nothing bad happens.

That works both ways (you can ignore me to), I guess you're still mad that I'm not mad?

On the flip side, if WE ignore THIS, then we encourage it, and potentially make things worse for ourselves.

I guess it's more a question of priorities. Is it worth getting all worked up over this particular issue? $1 DLC? It isn't to me. I'd rather see the anger directed towards an issue that actually matters.

So you're the only one here complaining about shit that doesn't matter, Jesus fucking Christ.

Didn't mean to hit a nerve.

@Grimluck343: Did we read the same article?

In the one I'm reading, Patrick wrote, "Microsoft has some very strange, inconsistent policies when it comes to offering free content on its service. Supergiant Games alluded to wanting to make the content free in its announcement post." That doesn't sound terribly inflammatory to me. That's just a statement.

Even the title, "Bastion Getting Free DLC Everywhere But Xbox 360", is just a statement. Can you really say that it isn't true? He doesn't seem to be demanding that anyone get angry. He's just keeping us informed, which is his job.

I don't know if furious is the word I would use. Confused, maybe?

I understand if people don't like Patrick, I wasn't his biggest fan at first either, but his style of journalism is a million times better than the rest of the pandering garbage that's dominated the video game industry's enthusiast press for over a decade.

I'm not a fan of the ad sponsored news we get on other sites, but I'm also not a fan of Patrick's "investigative journalism" either. Hell, if I want video game news, I go to Joystiq, so I'm not really sure what that says about my taste in video game news.

Surely you can agree that Microsoft forcing game developers to charge for content they don't want to charge on is dumb.

I guess? It seems like a one off scenario, most companies aren't really in the business of giving things away for free, which is why I think they handled it pretty well ($1) and it's not that big a deal. Clearly people disagreed with me (which is okay, people can have their opinions).

How, then, is it ever going to change?

It probably won't. At best they'll make an exception for the next game.

If people raise a fuss about it, and people with the ability to actually be heard, complain about it. Microsoft may be forced into changing their policy.

I said this earlier: vote with your wallet, not your internet persona. If people bitch about it but buy it anyways its not doing anything to change Microsoft's mind.

The same goes for EA's policy of banning people from games,

THIS is something worth getting upset over.

or maybe even Sony's ridiculous UMD cash-grab program.

I'm more on the fence about this one. Saying that "Japanese gamers are paying crazy prices for video games they already own" kind of isn't enough to get me that upset. Hell, it'll probably never roll out to the US anyways.

I have nothing against people being more informed. It's a question of what to do with this information. Grabbing the pitchforks and heading to Redmond wasn't the first thing I had in mind, but apparently that's what other people want to do.

(And for the record, I wasn't comparing this, or you, to terrorism.

You misread, I want someone to try and compare this to terrorism for funsies.

Just the type of people pissing on Occupy Wall Street-esque movements that amusingly end up taking the side of businesses over the incredibly stressed lower classes of society.)

There's already enough heated discussion here without bringing politics into this. I'll leave this one alone.

Edit: looks like a mod deleted my original post, which was probably for the best. I'll admit I made a mistake and was overly harsh towards @patrickklepek. I'll just excuse myself from the discussion and let everyone get back to being angry and stuff.

So.

Does that mean that one free Arcade game that Microsoft released years ago, in good faith to prove that they aren't money grubbing tyrants, is $1 now too? I wonder.

Although I doubt that SuperGiantGames are actually getting any of this, it's probably so Microsoft gets some kind of funding out of it. If anything they will get like 3 out of that 80 points because hey, it's Microsoft we're talking about. In fact I wouldn't be surprised that all 80 points are for Microsoft.

SuperGiantGames wasn't intending to make anything off of this hence the word "Free" right? Then the Microsoft Giant showed up and was all like, "We're a fucking Billion Dollar downloadable service bitch, they no such thing as free 'round here. You got that!!!" So the 80 point charge was agreed upon and all was well in LIVEland.

@patrickklepek You really can't resist stirring shit up can you? Here's a great announcement, more Bastion to play, but instead you turn this into another "fuck Microsoft, everyone should get really angry" article.

Between this, the UMD passport article, and the Microsoft ToS article, you're batting .000 on mobilizing your personal Giant Bomb army.

Seriously? None of this stuff bothers you? It's attitudes like this that are the reason they can nickel and dime the industry with no repercussions.

This, ignorance is bliss.

Maybe this will put to rest the fan theory that Rucks is

actually The Kid who is somehow sent back in time or something if you choose the Restoration ending, then he somehow gets involved with the project to create the Bastion, then by the time the game happens he is old enough to be Rucks.

I really hope that's not his backstory, because that would make for a really dull Who Knows Where level, though at the very least, learning some history of Caelondia will be sweet.

Indeed. Most DLC should cost about $1. The margins on DLC are fucking absurd. They've already done so much of the work in making sure their game is full functioning and fleshed out within the game engine, and the DLC is just a matter of coming up with a handful of new ideas, implementing them, then selling them digitally, where all of the retail middlemen aren't even taking a cut.

Sure, some developers make DLC that is substantive and worth the $5-$15, but too often you see $5 costume packs (looking at you, Capcom), and it is effing ludicrous that they think it's reasonable to charge that when a new retail game costs $60.

I have to very much agree. 99% of DLC is really stupidly priced. An Indie developer can put entire game modes and story elements in for free (and forcibly one dollar), while the big time developers are "struggling" and need to charge 2-5 dollars for pallette swaps? 10 dollars for hour long missions in the same game engine? 10 dollars to be allowed online? It's all insane money grubbing. You can do so much better and make a much longer lasting business model by just selling your stuff for what it's worth.

I have bought one DLC ever, the Shadow Broker for ME2. Widely hailed as one of the best examples of DLC.. I still felt ripped off. I payed 20% of the main game price for 5% of the equivalent content. Something does not add up here.

I seriously don't understand how people could be indignant about paying a dollar for this. Personally, I'm happy to give them a dollar, I'd prefer to. A dollar is about as close to jack-sh!t as you can get and really isn't worthy of discussion at all IMO. Anyway, this is a nice surprise and gives me that reason to finally play Game+. Hopefully SuperGiantGames are hard at work on their next game!

At least Shadow Broker was a well made piece of content. Still overpriced, but I feel I at least got some value from that.

Look at some other examples, like character packs in fighting games. I bought Mortal Kombat for £30 brand new, day of release and it has about 30 playable characters.. but each new DLC character costs 400 MS points, that's £20 for 4 characters. I can't even begin to comprehend how that works or how anyone thought it would be a good idea to buy those packs. With that logic, the main game should have cost me £150.. and how do I calculate how much the stages, voice work, story, unlockables and music should add on to that?

I was a big advocater of DLC when it started, I thought it'd be great for console games, but it very quickly turned into something I despise. I just refuse to buy any of it now, and I wish more people would do the same.

@BisonHero: @Draxyle: Yea, maybe this will set a precedent of the Steam Sale mentality for DLC. "Its so fucking cheap im a moron not to buy it!" Id say Patrick should do a follow up on the sales, income vs other DLC but Im sure MS is taking 80 cent of every sale lol. Still the numbers would be interesting to see compared.

@Grimluck343: I respect your opinion, but for some of us when a company wishes to give their consumers free content and have no way doing so due to an aggregator... it twists some of us the wrong way.

Again... why am I paying $60 per year for XBox Live?

It isn't the $1. It's the fact that nearly every publisher has had the exact same issue with MS on "free DLC." To me, that says something, and it appears you have some kind of "bone to pick" with Patrick. Do I agree with everything that Patrick says? Nope. I just happen to agree with him on this particular issue.

No, it's not the "end all be all issue" that should "rage The Internets (tm)." However, it is pathetic that every other platform is releasing this DLC for free (with the express wishes of the developers), yet MS does not.

This exact issue ties into the fact that paid Gold members *still* have to see ads. (ummm why?) Any free DLC distributed on XBox Live pretty much needs ad support (see GoW first DLC).

Again... what is the purpose for the $60 yearly fee?

Does MS have the right to charge us for this? Yup. I absolutely agree with you that they do. Does that mean that I as a consumer agree or like this? Nope.
