Bastion Getting Free DLC Everywhere But Xbox 360

When you think about some of 2011’s best downloadable games, Bastion immediately comes to mind, and if you’ve been hoping to scratch that itch again, Supergiant Games has what you need.

On December 14, Supergiant Games is launching the Stranger’s Dream downloadable content, which includes a new “Who Knows Where” section, complete with new voice overs, and two new modes. Score Attack Mode starts players at level one with all spirits and idols unlocked, and No-Sweat Mode is the equivalent of very, very easy--you can continue where you die.

Stranger’s Dream won’t cost a dime on PC, but you’ll have to pay $1 on Xbox Live, as Microsoft has some very strange, inconsistent policies when it comes to offering free content on its service. Supergiant Games alluded to wanting to make the content free in its announcement post.

“The Stranger’s Dream DLC will be available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) on XBLA, which we can’t make free due to Microsoft policy, so it’s about as close as we could get,” said the company. “Though, since you’ll be getting a good chunk of new content, we think you’ll be satisfied with your purchase.”

That content will also come to the Google Chrome, which may come as a shock if you haven’t heard that Bastion is also fully playable through Google Chrome now. Yes, the browser! It means Mac owners can check out this spectacular action RPG. That version is available right now, and if you want to see how well it does/doesn’t work, you can play the prologue for free.

Why must Microsoft have such crap policies that dictates what developers can/can't do with their own content?

The only lame thing about really cheap DLC is that you have to put out a minimum $5 order to your wallet (PS3) or MS Points.

I don't know how they did it, I don't know how it works, but it's magic. Bastion barely downloaded for a minute before I was up and playing the prologue.

Wish they'd announced this before it went off-sale on Steam. Would have been better off just getting a PC copy and having some versatility in my game library. I know it's just $1 but Microsoft's policy is asinine.

It's been out on Onlive for a couple of weeks at this point, toooooo. So Mac peeps have a couple of options, especially if your computing power isn't enough to run it in Chrome. You can even play it on Android tablets using touch controls with Onlive (free iPad player app is still in certification with apple). I'm hoping that the Onlive version is considered "PC" and thus will be getting the free content too.

Will it add more achievements? I hope not. I got my S-Rank in it already.

Wait. I thought this game was not getting DLC? Yea it's great it's free but doesn't this kinda lean toward more DLC that'll be paid? I don't know.

Happy to give the $1 for more of that game. Free would have been nice, but at least some amount of cents are going towards the next game from Supergiant

Alright, sure, I'll fight more waves of enemies in exchange for backstory.

I was worried about this at first since I own it on Xbox, but then I saw it was just $1 and didn't mind. That said, Microsoft has some dumb policies that will hopefully be gone when it comes to the next generation.

What's fun about this to me is that I released a game a day after Bastion came out, and our free DLC's comin out the day after theirs aswel!

Would it be "legal" from Microsoft's perspective if SuperGiant charged people a dollar, and they gave out "free" codes for the dlc? I'd much rather SuperGiant get the buck than Microsoft get any of it.

I'm kinda surprised MS would even allow the $1 price tag, I assumed their policies would insist it be higher. Regardless, from what I've seen of Bastion's fans I don't see this $1 fee holding many of them back.

It probably will; all of the other Who Knows Wheres have achievements attached to them (well, at least in the Steam version)

The title is kind of misleading, at first I was thinking that the 360 wasn't getting Bastion DLC at all.

Microsoft isn't stupid. They would be able to tell that the "patch" contains a suspicious amount of new audio files, and way too many level assets and new mode assets to possibly just be a balance patch or a bug fix.

Patrick doesn't want to see consumers getting fucked over on stupid policies. If you have no problem with getting fucked over (Microsoft INSISTING that you pay for free content is the definition of fucking you over, by the way, dollar or not.) then you shouldn't have any problem with Patrick stating his opinion. Then again, he could charge you a dollar for this article and you'd totally be cool with it.

That's pretty much what MS is forcing SGG to do here, making them charge for content they want to release for free... The fucking nerve of MS. I'd be pissed. I'd have just kept the content off of XBL and encouraged others to do the same. MS would ease up on this stupid fucking policy if it meant they kept getting inferior versions.

How did Valve get away with free co-op DLC for Portal 2?
