Battlefield 3 Beta Invite Inside Medal Of Honor Limited Edition

EA is finally talking about Battlefield 3... but there may be some things you didn't expect.

Between the success of the Bad Company franchise on consoles and the wide variety of projects DICE has been spread across these past few years, I was legitimately unsure as to whether the core Battlefield franchise would ever get its next proper sequel. I mean, some people were even speculating that, by bringing Bad Company 2 to the PC alongside the other versions, EA and DICE were not-so-subtly implying that Bad Company was the proper successor to the Battlefield franchise, and that any new, proper Battlefield had long since been pushed aside to make way for other projects.

But, lo and behold, friends: Battlefield 3 is still absolutely a thing. Today, EA announced that all the Limited Editions of Medal Of Honor would come with a voucher that would, eventually, guarantee a spot in a Battlefield 3 beta. The proper, real-ass sequel to Battlefield 2. Battlefield 3 is still coming out.

Everyone: take a moment to remember your time playing Battlefield 2.

 Good times.
 Good times.

OK, now come back to the story. We've got things to discuss. This news story brings up questions we need answered.

== TEASER ==First of all, the game doesn't actually come with the beta on the disc or anything like that. Instead, the beta will be properly released at a later date. Furthermore, the Battlefield 3 beta information site specifies that invite is only valid provided that the beta is released "within 12 months of Medal of Honor's release, according to the official site. Given Medal of Honor's October 12 release date, it seems likely that Battlefield 3 will probably be touching down in late 2011 or early 2012, right? DICE is not Blizzard, and first-person shooters usually don't go into year-long open beta testing. So, it's entirely probable that Battlefield 3 release is still a ways off.

The other more interesting discussion, however, is about which platforms Battlefield 3 is being released on. On that same Battlefield 3 beta information site, EA states that, "Xbox GOLD membership required for Xbox users." It's possible that this is just some poorly worded boilerplate text or something, but that seems to imply that there will be a 360 version of Battlefield 3... meaning that Battlefield 3 is probably coming to consoles as well as the PC.

With a console release now a possibility, just how different will Battlefield 3 be from Bad Company 2?
With a console release now a possibility, just how different will Battlefield 3 be from Bad Company 2?

A console release of a numbered Battlefield would mark a huge departure from the previous messaging about the future of the Battlefield franchise. By giving the console iterations of the game a different franchise name in Bad Company, EA and DICE sent a message that these console versions of Battlefield were definitely offshoots of the core, "real" franchise. To me that says that Battlefield 3, when it did come out, would be a PC-exclusive, and Bad Company was not intended to be Battlefield 3.

However, these beta invites are going out with the PC, PS3, and 360 Medal of Honor Limited Editions. Take that along with the messaging on the site and it wouldn't be far-fetched to expect Battlefield 3 on consoles as well as PC.

Granted, it's probably still way, way early to say any aspect of Battlefield 3 is set in stone, and there's at least a year until the game ships. Regardless, Battlefield 3 is coming, but who can say what form it will take when it finally arrives?

If it is similar to Bad Company 2 then I am not interested. Great game and all, but I don't need two of them.

proper battlefield games and bad company games are entirely, vastly different things. Don't even compare the 2, Battlefield 2 is immensely superior to BC2.

The multiplatform thing really isn't that surprising. I think Blizzard are the only company out there with a big enough base of hardcore, devoted fans to be able to make PC-exclusive releases profitable. I don't have any real knowledge of the system, of course, but I imagine that if you're any developer - even a top-class one like DICE - and you pitch a game like BF3 to a publisher, then say, "and it's PC exclusive," they would turn around and go "wut". Like it or not, consoles are the domain of the FPS now. They have huge appeal. I don't even need to name the prime example because it's so obvious. A title like BF3 would sell metric fucktons on a console. Hell, I'd have to get it on a console because I can't afford to upgrade my PC to play it.

I don't mind it being multiplatform so long as gameplay, depth and scope aren't compromised. Sadly, those two things usually go hand in hand.

Slap all the eperiences from BF2 into the Frostbite engine and I'll be a happy camper. I don't know what it is about BF:BC2 but it just didn't feel like a proper Battlfield experience like the PC previous PC versions did.

hate train on MOH is pretty strong, mainly because of CTD bugs, but last i checked CTD were super strong in BC2 beta as well (i had beta of that for 6 months) also owned BC1, and know that BC2 was a carbon copy of BC1 with only 4 new weapons, hud, weapon sounds, models were all identical hud was just different colors, and there was more dust/snow/sand being blown around for effect  , so unless you know this please stop acting like BC2 was liquid gold, it was far from it

MOH i found was way better in terms of teamplay and coop, no vehicles (except 1 on the rail tank to escort), and little to no explosives/grenade spam.  so the focus was teamwork (which i found was VERY common) and actually using tactics to outflank/outmaneuver your oponent

Yo, I heard videogames are really expensive to make. Releasing on every major platform just makes sense from a monetary perspective, especially considering that they have previous knowledge of how to release on consoles successfully.

No doubt the PC version will be the best one though, but I would happily play it on my PS3.

The more money they make, the more games they make. Awesome.

Also, I'll pass on MoH haha, I can wait.

I was referring to 3. The possibility of console versions has me worried. I want to play on giant maps with 64 players and fighter jets again. I'm just worried it will be Bad Company 2 all over again.

For those console gamers wondering why pc gamers would prefer this be a pc exclusive, it's not about being elitist. If this becomes multiplatform, it would be essentially like developing a game for the 360, wii and ps3, where the lowest common denominator (in this case the wii), is catered for. Inevitably this means due to hardware limitations and control differences, the 360 and ps3 versions will suffer, with graphics and physics, and player counts worse than what it could have been if developed exclusively for the 360 and ps3.

In the same way (as was seen with bc2 with its poor optimisation on the pc version), the pc version of bf3 will suffer this fate. It really is no secret that modern pc's are much more powerful machines than any of the current consoles (the only thing comparable atm is the cell processor and tri-core cpu on ps3 and x360, but there are still relatively cheap cpu's that can be had which would trump these). It most likely cannot be avoided since developing the games to be much different on each version would increase development costs drastically, something i somehow doubt EA would be willing to do.

EDIT: And for those pulling out the piracy card, seriously that has absolutely no basis for a battlefiled game, of which the gameplay is primarily focussed on multiplayer, which simply cannot be enjoyed to nearly the same extent with a pirated copy. Battlefield is one of those games where the pc gaming community would suddenly reappear, to give the game stellar sales. Just look at the pre-order sales for starcraft 2. If the pc gamers get a worthy pc game, it will be bought.

Also multiplatform BF3 makes me sad.

"
Why? "
Look at the post above. :P "
Just Did, Do you realise that Bad Company 2 is out on PC? If it was intended for consoles it wouldn't be on the PC. Try again. :P   "
The only thing that differs Bad Company 2 from it's console versions is the 32 online player capability and the server browsing feature. Aside from that, it's still a dumbed down console port with kits and vehicles programmed and designed around the limits of a  controller. The helicopters are  incapable of any maneuvers most of us know from BF Vietnam and BF2 and the size of the maps are clearly not designed for 32 players.

If a BF3 is made for all three platforms, many would be afraid that they designed everything with the limitaitons of the console in mind. I for one don't want to see a BF3 that lacks 64 player online, proper squad commands with more details than "point at flag and press Q". Oh and maps that are too small for planes!

@A_Wet_Shamwow:  I completely agree with you from the developer/publisher standpoint. It simply makes good business sense. Doesn't mean i'm happy about it though. I am all for more people enjoying the battlefield franchise, but i can't help but be a little dissapointed when my favourite franchise shows signs of deteriorating. Personally i feel the bad company series should have remained console exclusive, and have bf3 remain pc exclusive. I hate to sound so selfish, but it does kinda suck for the bf vets, and i'm sure anyone would feel the same way in the same position.

Of course if DICE/EA can manage to please console and pc players with bf3, i'd be all for it. On a side note, i don't think there's anything inherently wrong with console gaming, hell i'd buy a 360 or ps3 if i had the money atm, it's just the direction they seem to be taking which really bothers me, ie. simple money grabbing. Most notably requiring a subscription to play any game online for 360, and the insane amounts of dlc which simply aren't worth their price, but are lapped up anyway (with exceptions of course).

Hopefully i'm not sounding too much like an insane pc fanboy, cos i truelly despise fanboys (and the word itself...), and this article doesn't really reveal much about bf3, so take all that i have said as speculative commentary (or something), from the standpoint of a primarily pc gamer.

You know there's piracy consoles don't you? And saying alot of pc gamers don't pay is a myth look
at steam sales look at WOW and starcraft  bottom line if you make a good pc  game for pc gamers it will make alot of money. And looking at the dumb down state that the FPS genre has become
thanks to games likes COD, BF3 would be so refreshing and sell tons if they catered to the PC.

Who knows what Battlefield 3 really is? Maybe it'll be an persistent online world, much like MAG. We do not really know. To me that would make sense, because I'm not sure what DICE would do to differentiate the Bad Company series from the core Battlefield one. Unless DICE plans to unite the two series under one roof. Regardless, if it is a full-on successor to Battlefield 2, having console versions does not necessarily mean the PC version needs to be scaled back. One of the great features of BF2 is the ability to scale the maps down or up to fit appropriate team sizes. The consoles versions could simply be scaled down to the limitations of the hardware while still allowing the PC version to exist as requested.

I love Bad Company 2, but I really do miss the large 5 point Conquest maps from BF2. I really do.

Gamers, meet economic reality.  Whereas you could cater to a smaller market when games were simpler, you need a huge market to support development of more advanced games.  Don't blame EA, DICE, or consoles.  Blame yourselves for not buying more games.

Nooooo! If BF3 is gimped to for a multiplatform release I will be saying my final goodbyes to the franchise.

Secondly I will not be picking up a copy of Medal of Honor, period. I will find some other way into the Beta... unless it's not a PC exclusive like I already said.

As far as I'm concerned 2142 is the true sequel to BF2.

As a software developer, I know the value of a good set of beta testers. As a gaming enthusiast, I completely fail to understand the appeal of playing betas. The game will be out soon enough and you can play it (sans many more problems) at that point. In the meantime, there are too many games that are actually released to keep up with before they grow stale and the communities fade away (making the games pointless to play). It seems that the last thing you would want to do is waste your time playing an unreleased and unfinished glitchy game and drawing up bug reports and reproduction steps and so on.

I can see that some (especially younger people) may find a desirable sense of "I'm doing something you don't get to do" or "I'm playing something that isn't out yet" bragging that is exciting, but . . . still.
