Bejeweled Coming to WoW

PopCap cooks up a casual speedball for World of Warcraft players.

I'm just not feeling it anymore, man. You got anything...stronger?
I'm just not feeling it anymore, man. You got anything...stronger?
You know that game, World of Warcraft? The most widely played massively multiplayer game in the history of this ancient spinning ball of lava? The one that has consumed countless years of countless people's lives, leaving normal social interaction and loved ones in its wake? Someone should really consider making it more addictive.

Oh, but apparently someone has! As originally reported by Wired, the casual game magnates at PopCap Games have teamed up with the creator of a homebrew Bejeweled-style add-on for WoW to make something a little more official, though still free of charge. As anyone who's logged serious time with WoW knows, there are long stretches of relative inactivity, and what better way to keep players engaged than with the most popular casual puzzle game this side of Minesweeper? As an aside, I honestly think much of the praise WoW has received is well-earned, but what does it say about your game when you need to introduce another game to distract from the apparently plentiful tedious bits?

If you have a third party developing a casual game to fill in the downtime gaps in your own game, shouldn't that throw up a red flag that says there is something horribly broken with your game design?  I, for one, wouldn't go around touting it as a "feature".   But, that's just me...

Whatever, I think they just want to put more cool stuff into WoW, and plus its free so who cares. But i wonder if you can get it from WoW Matrix.

Bejeweled and not Puzzle Quest? That seems like a pretty retarded thing to miss out on, Activision. PQ is a hundred thousand times more WoW compatible than classic Bejeweled. I mean, WOWIE!

Adding PVP, importing WoW spells, weapons, and character art into a PQ styled game would actually make PQ worth playing for more than a few hours, then never returning, ever.

PS: Damnit Giantbomb, if I click something with my middle mouse button, I expect it to open a new tab... even from the drop-down selections in the search box. If you can't do that, then at least let the comment box (or other text boxes) remember what was in them before the site forces me to navigate away.

@BobC: I guess I was blaming them for not owning/licensing Puzzle Quest. I dunno, was just caught up in the moment. I had it much better articulated the first time I typed it.

Interesting take, Mr.Klorox, but what's Activision got to do with any of this?

It be worth it if there was a reward for playing it? Like high-score tables and the top 50 every month get tokens for stuff or maybe access to a limited edition mount. Otherwise its a total waste of time.

I've always thought a casino or pub with mini games should have been implemented in WoW.  Blizzard is always trying to find "gold sinks" for people to spend their money and keep inflation down, as well as ways to offer some rare items as rewards.

While this appears to be a game outside of WoW's economy, it may show Blizz that there is something that folks want and go to the next step.

EverQuest had /gems and that was great during downtime.  Now WoW is getting Bejeweled.  I say it is pretty awesome.  Plus, to those saying it is lame, gtfo.  I turn on my games to play them, not because I am going to "study" inbetween flight paths LOL!

Also, love the screenshot.  Especially the guy in the guild called: "We Smoke Herbs" haha

Lame?  Why?  This is no different than playing Super Hang-On in Shenmue, or bowling in GTA IV.  It's actually brilliant, and I'd wish they'd take it a step further and put content-appropriate games in places like taverns--take Kotor's Pazaak game for example.  If you're bored and don't want to quest, why not give players a version of black jack or poker to play in one of the dozens of taverns littered across the game world?  It'd be a great way to gamble for gold.  Or better yet, the WoW trading card game, in-game!  *mind melts / head explodes*

Like Tortoise said, you're usually waiting for people, which is where the downtime comes in, through little or no fault of the game's.

To be fair most of the downtime in WOW is due to waiting on party members or guildmates rather than  any feature of the game.

The_A_Drain Says:

Lame. Sure, waiting around for auctions and stuff is a pain but seriously, thats when you should be studying, working, or generally doing something else instead of playing the game.

This.

So it's a community made addon, slapped with a licensed name? That was needed.
