Bethesda Aware of Texture Issues on Skyrim for Xbox 360

Until a title update comes out, you'll have to make a choice about installing the game.

The launch of a new game from Bethesda Softworks typically means a period where the kinks (the ones that Bethesda can reasonably address, anyway) are being worked out.

Players have been reporting texture streaming issues on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Xbox 360, resulting in some lower quality textures never being replaced by their better looking counterparts.

What are people talking about? This.

Bethesda admits it's a problem, specifically as it relates to the Xbox 360 version being installed.

“We’ve seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up,” said the studio on its forums. “We have verified that this issue does not occur when playing off the disk and when the game is fully cached (not installed). Skyrim makes heavy use of the Xbox 360 caching system, and caches over the normal course of play while in menus or interiors. This cache can be wiped when other games are played or when the user manually removes it.”

Of course, not installing the game means you’ll have to deal with longer load times, so there’s a decision in front of potential Skyrim players staring at their Xbox 360 discs after work today.

Bethesda said a title update is in the works to address this issue, but there’s not timeframe for it yet.

If you give a shit about this:

1. You are an idiot.

2. You should have bought the PC version.

Just keep trolling, just keep trolling, just keep trolling, trolling, trolling. What a loser!

As the one person on earth who has never installed an Xbox game, this totally doesn't affect me! Still a bummer, though.

How is the load time on the 360 version. The loads are 1-3 seconds on pc, but the stream for xbox showed them pretty short as well.

Posted by AxleBro

texture bugs are also present on pc version. just not as heavily. super noticeable from afar if you have it set to ultra-high.

2.Not everyone owns a high end gaming PC.

3.Stop being stupid.

1. Indeed

2. You don't need a high end gaming PC to play this game. My 5 year old mid range PC is doing fine.

3. Indeed again.

EDIT: By indeed I'm agreeing to your point about people being rightfully annoyed. Reread that after posting and realized it could have been read the other way.

im glad i buy SP games for my ps3 instead of my xbox.

avoid this and it's all quiet when i play it, although the save system is derpy.

Posted by OtakuGamer

Haha, I never noticed. I was too busy having fun than looking at textures.

I love Bethesda games but every game they release has the same technical issues but yet they charged us 60 bucks.

Posted by PhilipDuck

Hmm i have seen a few texture problems while playing but tbh, the games awesome and i can deal with it for now. Also who didn't expect this anyway...?

Posted by Will_M

I really don't care all that much. Plus I'll never play a game on xbox without first installing it. Im sure once the update comes out, we'll have to uninstall then reinstall to get the texture portions in.

My 5 year old pc can't even play this on low.

I noticed I was having this issue, so I cleared my cache and installed it to an External Flashdrive and I think that's solved the issue for me.

For the longest time, I thought the game just had bad looking textures, sign posts (Ones pointing to towns) out in the world were barely legible. But now I'm playing from the flash, I can see the difference in a lot of things. My robes, my weapons and I can read what the signs say!

Some people love the ES games, some people don't like various things about them, and everyone knows they're buggy (which is generally "okay" because "it's so big" if you're an ES game, but means a drastically reduced score if you're, say, Two Worlds II). But I don't think I've every really heard anyone question whether there's $60 worth there...

Is Skyrim dodgy in any significant way like this on PS3? Fallout New Vegas was shit when I had a 360 but runs fine on my computer that uses a laptop CPU! I'm asking because I don't want to buy it if it's not going to work properly.

good thing i have a PC.

I love this fucking mentality. get game out. patch later. fuck bugs.

stupid as shit.

Posted by MagusMaleficus

This happens regardless of whether you install or not. Sucks, but whatevs. I'm too busy slicin' dudes too care.

Posted by SpecDotSign

@drew327: None, as far as I'm concerned. The game installed surprisingly fast and it runs well. A bit frame-y, but no complaints so far.

Heard installing to a usb stick works

Posted by Ronald

It's a Bethesda game. I would be scared if there weren't issues when the game is first released.

Posted by Slaker117

This is happening to me playing off the disk. Kind of sucks.

damn right he does! No but really. xbox one looks horrid. got this for pc and just hooked my ps3 controller up. Turned up the sensitivity and it works wonders. Anyone who got this for console.. I am sorry, your missing out on a very pretty game.

Posted by Grillbar

this is a game you just should not play on a console unless you have no other choice. but i can see that it would suck for someone who plays it on the xbox hopefully they will fix it soon.

Really??? weird complaint

@Norusdog: Games are a hell of a lot more complicated to make then they were any generation before this one. There is a huge difference between the code that makes up skyrim than say the original GoW on ps2.

And it's not like Bethesda didn't play test it. I haven't met a single bug or crash on the PC version. Also there's only a problem on the xbox version if you install it. There are probably tons of xbox users who aren't even experiencing this issue. Honestly this is probably one of the mildest launch problems this year.

Posted by RoxasXIII

Literally as I'm installing it..

Posted by NekuCTR

Load times never bother me because I multitask a lot. For me the choice is simple.

Posted by DoubleKR

I honestly don't know how to react to this. On one hand we've all finally reached a day that we had been waiting for since we finished Shivering Isles, and on the other I feel like someone just gave me a Corvette with Honda motor in it. We can't have our cake and eat it too? I just feel so... lost, like when I saw Star War episode one. Come on we are all loyal fans, and we are entitled to the same great, beautiful, epic, and masterful experience. Are we not? Why should we have to suffer because we have a console? Well, idk but i can say that Bethesda has always fixed its problems within a reasonable time. I will not let this destroy a great game. Enjoy the game guys.

Posted by tactis

huh, I have installed the game and I haven't really noticed this issue.

Posted by Slaneesh

Im playing the pc version with a pad. So i get my couch experience just on the pc. And holy crap how are the load times better

Same here, but...

...Skyrim seems to hate my graphics card, because the LOD's and model swapping glitch out like a bitch all the time, making the game visually unpleasant very often. I just updated drivers, but so far it seems that the PS3 version is the only one that will work as intended out of the box.

Oh, Bethesda, will you ever swallow your pride and go hire some new software engineers? It's been 17 years now. I think I've been patient enough.

Posted by CreamOfWeber

@Frenden: Not bad at all. Just a few seconds. Nothing like Oblivion or even Fallout 3. So nothing to fret over. :)

Posted by CreamOfWeber

@PrivateIronTFU: My guess would be you're both 12.

Posted by MormonWarrior

Seems like the only noticeable difference between the PS3 and 360 versions. So...I guess I'll wait for Amazon to have a deal on this game and for some patches to come out and we'll be all good.

Posted by chikin_n_rofls

As someone with an older 360, I still prefer installing it just to reduce the noise coming out of that thing. The faster load times are also nice. The difference in textures is noticeable, but I'm usually too preoccupied to really think about it. Don't get me wrong, though. It's pretty lame, no doubt about that.

I agree, but that's the age we're in now. The days of expecting the game to just fucking work right out of the box are over. A publisher could win me over quickly by releasing a string of big budget games that had no issues.

They´ve pushed the 360 version pretty heavily.. and now it´s easily the worst looking of the bunch. Way to go Bethesda. I don´t care that much for graphics, but it still bothers me. Well, better than trying to navigate the menus with keyboard I guess.

What were they thinking when they ported the UI over to PC?! Game feels like Gothic 2 or something on PC. Certainly looks cool on there though.

Posted by Kandycane2029

I haven't noticed any problems on the 360 version. I have had the game crash on me once, though. But it may have something to do with the Dashboard beta.

I'm in the same boat as the only problem was a crash that happened just after I got the dashboard update. That said, I have noticed some insanely ugly textures, so it's nice to know having it installed caused it and it's not supposed to be like that.

Good thing a 360 pad works a treat with the PC version.

That's what I'm rolling with. Best of both worlds. 3 second load times, whisper quiet, 1080, Awesome textures (You can read the labels on the mead bottles very clearly). The xbox controller integration with the pc is very good. You can still f5 quick save and use the keyboard to type in names as well as bring up the console.

7-year-old hardware with 15-year-old technology has trouble dealing with a modern game? Color me shocked.

Posted by Ujio

Ah, good ol' 360. You never cease to amaze in your prowess.

Posted by Berezov

It's almost as if people here want to install the game to their hard drive. Weird.

Posted by twm

Too minor, please cancel the issue.

Posted by locolukah

So glad i cancelled my pre-order. I CANNOT STAND BUGGY GAMES!!

Pc ultra settings = remarkable graphics. Wish I could sympathize
