Bethesda Aware of Texture Issues on Skyrim for Xbox 360

Until a title update comes out, you'll have to make a choice about installing the game.

The launch of a new game from Bethesda Softworks typically means a period where the kinks (the ones that Bethesda can reasonably address, anyway) are being worked out.

Players have been reporting texture streaming issues on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Xbox 360, resulting in some lower quality textures never being replaced by their better looking counterparts.

What are people talking about? This.

Bethesda admits it's a problem, specifically as it relates to the Xbox 360 version being installed.

“We’ve seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up,” said the studio on its forums. “We have verified that this issue does not occur when playing off the disk and when the game is fully cached (not installed). Skyrim makes heavy use of the Xbox 360 caching system, and caches over the normal course of play while in menus or interiors. This cache can be wiped when other games are played or when the user manually removes it.”

Of course, not installing the game means you’ll have to deal with longer load times, so there’s a decision in front of potential Skyrim players staring at their Xbox 360 discs after work today.

Bethesda said a title update is in the works to address this issue, but there’s not timeframe for it yet.

They´ve pushed the 360 version pretty heavily.. and now it´s easily the worst looking of the bunch. Way to go Bethesda. I don´t care that much for graphics, but it still bothers me. Well, better than trying to navigate the menus with keyboard I guess.

What were they thinking when they ported the UI over to PC?! Game feels like Gothic 2 or something on PC. Certainly looks cool on there though.

Good thing a 360 pad works a treat with the PC version.

Can I just hook up to USB with the play n' charge adapter?

@hfm: Unfortunately, that's not the case. It will charge, but it doesn't, if I recall correctly, send data through the cable; just power. You'll either need a fully wired controller or the wireless PC dongle.

I have the game installed on my HD, and don't have any complaints with textures. After watching the video, it's obvious the game looks better when not installed, but I'll keep mine installed to keep load times down, and because Bethesda is working on a fix, which I expect to be out soon.

My 360 is old enough that its really not the load times thats the problem with not installing the game, its the damn sound from the disc spinning. I'm not sure I can go back to playing 360 games and loosing my hearing at the same time again.

But since I read about this I am really starting to notice how bad the textures look. Gah.

Hmmm well I always install my games on the 360, it's quieter and it ensures that the dvd drive on it will last longer.

Weird, I was bummed that I got the PS3 version, since it seems to have super frame rate issues the more you play, and is only remedied by a system reboot.

Installing to the HDD on 360 is always a good idea. Microsoft put SSDs on the things (which explains the cost of 360 hard drives being so high..and knowing they are SSD's the price is actually pretty low, you can't get a 250GB drive for that price on a PC.) SSDs are practically indestructible, as far as wear and tear goes, and the fastest drives on the market. With no moving parts, they'll practically last forever. Shame they put such a terrible optical drive next to it.

Bugs always happen in Bethesda releases, its getting to be a running joke at this point, especially after RAGE...but i'm consistently surprised that it's the console players suffering from them. A console is easier to fix bugs on, as the hardware configuration is known in advance, where PCs can have hundreds of different variations of operating systems, hardware, and software running the game.

The PC version does have its bugs - I had a crash at startup I fixed with a tweak to my sound settings, for example. I went PC because I love modding elder scrolls games, and have the hardware to make it look even more impressive than a console can. (I'm a nerd. I like However, don't tell the PC die-hards, I play with a 360 controller :P

Kinda wish the console makers would be less controlling, and let developers push out patches faster. If we need to tolerate patches on consoles, can we at least get them deployed as soon as they're ready? So often i've seen on twitter from indie devs "update will go out any minute on Steam, and we aren't sure how long for XBLA". I have no idea if this is slowing down any Skyrim patches, but i'm sure they're being worked on.

Umm, I don't think that microsoft uses SSDs at all. They'd be taking ridiculous losses selling a 250GB SSD at that price and I have an SSD on my computer and loads times are WAY faster than any installed 360 game.

Well fucking hell man. I'm on my 4th 360 and for the past two or three years since I've been installing games I haven't had any problems. I'm sure any warranty I had is expired by now, so there's no way I would ever play a game without installing it.
They better fix this quick.

You are correct. The XBox hard drives (besides the 4GB on the Arcade, I guess) are not SSDs. They are bog-standard 5400 RPM 2.5" notebook hard drives. Not sure what that other guy was talking about.

Look...this is the state of games. If you don't like that state you may want to avoid playing games for the rest of your life. Games today are made as perfect as they can within the confines of release dates and publisher pressure. With the intention of patching anything glaring that could not be fixed before release found in play testing in a day one patch. Beyond that developers rely on people like yourself in their community to give feedback on bugs and glitches that they find so that future patches may fix those. IT IS THE STATE OF VIDEO GAMES AND IT IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE. With the prevalence of high speed internet in the worlds major markets and the ability to fix problems on the fly with title updates.....I think this state is perfectly fine.

No one wants to buy a game that is completely broken and unplayable and I do believe that games should not be held to a standard than any other tangible good that is purchased, but almost every game that is released in today's world works pretty damn good with the exception of some bugs that probably eluded play testers considering most play testers don't get nearly enough time to properly test a game. You might argue that these games should be perfect once they go gold, but if that was the case....nothing would ever get released.

If I spend all my time with this fun game scrutinizing the textures (I will to a slight extent thanks to all the time spent doing 3d modeling/texturing) I'd really go crazy. After getting it at launch & sinking tons of hours in it, there's always things that could have been done better but shouldn't take away from enjoying the game.

I hope they're aware of the texture bug on the PC too. A single texture seems to going missing turning it into a shiny purple color after about an hour or two of play. When that happens, it's gartenteed to crash to desktop in the next 5-20 minutes.

The framerate is really dodgy on the PS3 for me. Every Xbox video I've seen it is almost perfectly smooth, but the PS3 version stutters around like mad at points. Namely outside of Riften what with all of the leaves and Water and junk.

I would rather have a few textures load slowly over playing with a bad framerate anyday. I re-installed all of the game data that the PS3 stores on it's harddrive and it's gotten much better, but I still hope Bethesda can find a fix for this.

Yep, PS3 version is pretty bad with framerate for me as well. It has also been doing this strange stuttering twitch with the shadows every once in a while. Like all shadows in view will sometimes twitch back and forth for a few seconds before settling down.

Lots of jank in this game. Buggy stuff all over the place.

What is your framerate like? I'm just curious because mine is pretty bad unless I'm looking at a wall or just the ground. Once a big fight starts with a lot going on- or I'm in an area with a ton of foliage it slows way the hell down for me. It's almost unplayable when in a fight with only a few enemies.

I absolutely love Bethesda games (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 are two of my favorite and most played games this generation), but I wish that they would release a game that didn't have major technical problem(s).

Their trying to give us vast open worlds filled with amazing depth of story, characters and locations and bringing them to us console gamers is deeply appreciated by myself as well as countless other people. However, the current technology of consoles will not allow their visions to be fully realized.

Hopefully the next generation of consoles (whenever they are released) will allow Bethesda to create the worlds they want to give us without major technical hinderances.

I think you're thinking of the stock super cheap 360 that comes with no hard drive and a few gigs of flash memory built in to it.

Every hard drive sold for the 360 is just a 5400 rpm laptop hard drive with a custom firmware on it. They make money hand over fist on this accessory.

If those 256 gig hard drive upgrades were SSDs, you'd never find one on a shelf because hard core tech guys would buy them all up, reflash them, and make money hand over fist on ebay.

The consoles have certification processes. They don't want patches breaking things, nor do they want developers trying to sneak things past them. Imagine a patch that included free downloadable content. Console makers wouldn't be very happy about not making their cut of DLC money. Imagine if a patch that was rushed out seriously broke something. That'd piss gamers off. Imagine if a patch opened up a backdoor to console modding. Heads would roll.

It's really getting to be well past time for new consoles. I know not to buy open world / buggy Bethesda / mod heavy stuff on a console, but the PC ports of these games suffer as the result of the 360 hitting puberty as well. And yeah, that is a nice dream of consoles having SSDs... if only the next gen decided to all go that way. They won't, the cost is prohibitive, and from what I read, SRT cacheing with an SSD and standard drive is still very unreliable in the long term.

Anyway, I tend to agree, if you have the game and it's still working, keep playing. This is the early adopter experience. Some of the bugs they eventually will fix are actually pretty funny to watch in action.

My character's eyes were ALL messed up at one point. I didn't know if it was supposed to be fatigue, or a disease, or what. For a minute I was almost amazed that they might be showing stuff like that. Well, it was a bug, and showracemenu in the console fixed it.
