Bethesda Secures RAGE Publishing Rights

EA Partners replaced by id's new overlords.

Wrong game, dude.
ZeniMax Media, the company that owns Bethesda and acquired id Software earlier this year, has announced that it has also acquired the publishing rights to id's upcoming shooter, RAGE. Previously, the game was scheduled to be published by Electronic Arts as part of the EA Partners label.

ZeniMax stated that the development of RAGE hasn't been affected by the change, and really, why would it be? Just expect to see the Bethesda Softworks logo staring at you from shelves when RAGE finally hits.

All of the released stuff on RAGE looks pretty cool, but at this point I'm trying to approach it the same way its developers are. I'll get excited about it when it's done.     Jeff Gerstmann on Google+

PRIMAL RAGEEEE!!!

Posted by gingertastic_10

Hmm. Alright. Don't see my Bethesda has to be the publisher, EA would do just fine. But I do like Bethesda, a lot.

Posted by JoeOE18

Maybe this will be the first good game from the new Bethesda publishing arm.

Posted by MarkWahlberg

Every time I see the name Rage, I think it's gonna be a remake of that old overhead-view alien shooter game where everybody exploded into huge bloody chunks when they died.

Posted by Complex

I think there better off with Bethesda instead of EA.
Posted by Teptom

Primal Rage? I may have a copy of that lying around somewhere.

Posted by buzz_clik

This certainly seems like the project to help dissipate Bethesda's less-than-sterling run on the publishing front.

Semi-sequitur: with that image you've given me the idea to make a game mash-up of Primal Streets of Rage.

try again lol.

If only Bethesda was publishing Primal Rage.

Posted by InFamous91

they're finally publishing a game that has potential.

Posted by Systech

Probably their first smart publishing choice.

Posted by clientkiller

If Bethesda is publishing it does it mean its going to be crap like rogue warrior and wet? :P

Posted by MildMolasses

Primal Rage on the VC would be awesome. Or a reboot. Someone should get on that.

And Time Splitters and Bloodstorm.

Actually, any fighting game from the mid-90's that has even a mild-level of notoriety

Posted by Binman88

Thankfully they're only publishing it. As long as the only part Bethesda plays is packaging and marketing the game, it should turn out fine.

Posted by Nasar7

I know Beth is trying to diversify and expand but all I really want from them is The Elder Scrolls V.

Posted by Scooper

Rage is one of the only games I'm excited about for 2010.. Not alot out there I'm looking forward to.

I think you got that backwards... unless you consider Rogue Warrior a quality product.

i think alot of you are confused how this works
Posted by DannyJ

Elder Scrolls V will probably come out when new technology is available. Unlike most company's they want their games to be amazing enough to last years before they feel the need to release a sequel.

As for this, I find it very interesting, seeing as many people were drawing similarities between Rage and Fallout 3.

Don't you feel dumb?

@Rowr: I know how it works. I meant I'm indifferent towards this type of news.

Well a better game to put publishing money into then WET and Rogue Warrior.

Primal Rage!

Posted by ahoodedfigure

Even if it feels a bit derivative it looks like it'll be fun.

What we need, though, is Primal Rage.  Crazy monkey claws, go!

Posted by PapaLazarou

This makes me wonder because if EA let it go then they mustn't have thought it would make a lot of money. So they musta just made a deal where they made all their development costs back and gotten outta that one lol.

Posted by PosableActionFigure

They want to publish it because they OWN id software. This isn't just some spur of the moment decision, "oh that game looks pretty good, let's publish it", they are publishing a game that THEIR COMPANY is making.

Maybe. It could also be that with the recent 'lower then expected" sales of Brutal Legend and their stings of lay offs, EA are unwilling to take the risk of further financing a game that they don't own.

They probably approached EA with an offer and EA said yes to the deal. If EA refused their offer then would have had to comply by it and let EA publish it. It's not like EA pulled the rug from under id. Bethesda probably paid them for the money they invested so far and some more on top of it.
Posted by baron_calamity

I wonder if any of this is related but i heard that EA is backing away from their EA Partners concept for AAA releases. If so then EA may have came to Bethesda with an offer.

Posted by SeriouslyNow

Bethesda has f-all to do with the handover, it's Zenimax who owns them both.  I can completely understand why Zeni wouldn't want EA's hand in this and it has nothing to do with EA's track record and lot to do with Zeni's financial stake in Id.  I really wouldn't be at all surprised if Bethsoft dropped Gamebryo altogether in the coming years, that's of course if IdTech5 is all it's cracked up to be.

Posted by PosableActionFigure
@SeriouslyNow:

ZeniMax and Bethesda are essentially one and the same. ZeniMax was founded by the Bethesda guys.

Posted by SeriouslyNow

True enough, but from a business perspective ZeniMax is not just a shelf company and they literally could sell Bethesda off one day.  ZeniMax has its fingers in many different pies and they don't want EA in the kitchen anymore.

Posted by Kohe321

Rage looks really cool

Posted by WilliamRLBaker

I thought Id was big enought to publish there own games...

Posted by Snail

Awesome news are awesome.

Edited by HitmanAgent47

They should of done that earlier, so they might have a bit more influence on that carmack guy (Considering he made doom 3 I belive) Which I don't trust to make an AAA game like bethesda would. I know bethesda is just a publisher, however they are known for quality and maybe if they were there earlier, it might of motivate carmack to care more about gameplay and less about graphics. I know know, just a thought.

Edited by Jayzilla

Bethesda published games(not to be confused with the games they develop and publish themselves) are usually not very good. Google a list of them. It seems to me that they go after titles they think they can make a buck on and then forget to actually play the games to see if they are any good. I mean, they just published that shooter with what's his name in it, and he cusses the whole time. Worst Game of the Year honors?

Do you even know who John Carmack is?
