Big Surprise, Deus Ex Is Headed to Next-Gen

Eidos Montreal teases Deus Ex: Universe, and themes for a Human Revolution sequel.

Shocking absolutely nobody, Eidos Montreal has confirmed a sequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PC and next-generation consoles on the studio’s blog today.

Studio head David Anfossi described the game’s status as being at the “starting point” of production, and said “most” of the team that worked on Human Revolution is also on this game.

“It took us four years to learn how to create a unique Deus Ex experience with Human Revolution and it was important for me to keep this knowledge within the franchise,” said Anfossi.

Though details on the sequel were kept vague, Anfossi did release one piece of concept art, and discuss some of the themes the team is exploring. Specifically, it's looking at the idea of trans-humanism segregation, and the idea of different parts of the world segregating into technological classism.

Anfossi also talked about Deus Ex: Universe, which is basically branding for the “extended universe” portion of the franchise. It’s the umbrella that novels, movies, spin-offs and other material will fall under.

Look, I was as skeptical as anyone about Human Revolution, but Eidos Montreal nailed it. Room for improvement? Sure. But it had the heart and spirit of a Deus Ex game, and I’m awfully excited to see where the series heads next. (No, I have not tried the weird iOS game.)
