Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 PSN Requires An Internet Connection

Good thing you used one to download it, right?

Consider the following a PSA of sorts: The PSN version of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 is using a form of DRM that requires an Internet connection when it boots. So, if your PS3 can’t talk to the cloud upon start-up, you won’t be able to play the game, despite the total absence of online functionality aside from basic leaderboards stuff (via TheSixthAxis).

Sound familiar? It should, for the Capcom devout out there. Final Fight: Double Impact had the exact same DRM, though the bugbear was that the publisher didn’t make it clear upfront that the game was protected. This time around, Capcom makes a note in the PSN Store description stating that you have to “log-in to the PSN each time to play the game.”

The Xbox Live Arcade version of Rearmed doesn’t have this kind of DRM, which probably says something about how many people are still sharing their PSN games through bogus profiles. I'll update if Capcom goes on record with a response as to why the game is protected as it is, or addresses some of the outcry from BC fans who aren't digging this form of rather... restrictive protection.

Pretty much this =\ and for people who have problems with it being connected to the internet all the time, just connect, then start the game and then disconnect and bam there it is.  "
Unless you can't get the internet all the time.  In the student hall where I live, it's hard to impossible to get a console online. I could take it to a friends house to buy it, but then I couldn't actually play it.  For everyone to assume that everyone ALWAYS has the internet, you're being very naive and idiotic. It's a shame, because I WAS going to buy this, but I guess now I'm going to pirate it on PC. Apples and oranges "
Im not saying always on the internet, I never said that, maybe you should have read my post before making snap accusations.  "
I didn't. I was discussing my own personal anecdote, sorry if that wasn't apparent.
And to sarcastically call MB a "Genius" was unecessary aswell. Maybe they downloaded it somewhere else. When I bought Pacman CEDX, I bought it at my girlfriends house, then carried on playing it at home. I planned to do this for BCR2, but I guess I can't.

Well it wasn't that apparent. I agree, just been having a bad day, a bit snappy. I keep hearing that they are planning on changing it down the line, I guess if all else fails, Stacking comes out in a couple days.

Anyone know if Rearmed #1 will be on sale price when this releases?  Never got around to trying it, but it looks like fun times.

So people are gonna pirate the PC version now? Why not, you know, BUY the PC version?

"Hey, this piracy thing is really cutting into our bottom line. What do we do about it?"
"Penalize everyone."
"Smart thinkin.  Give that man a raise"

If they got rid of all DRM except for a disc check and a CD key then I'm 90% certain sales for any such game would increase.
But the way things happen at the moment is that publishers whack a load of DRM on it, people pirate the game because it's easier than buying it and having a load of trouble, and then the publisher blames the pirates. If you're going to reduce piracy you have to make it easier to buy the game than it is to download, and that means getting rid of DRM.

Too bad this isn't piracy. "
Too bad it is. Piracy is defined as the any form of unauthorized copying of computer software. Basically it's copyright infringement, which this clearly is.

I'm not copying, or using my account in an unauthorized way. I'm allowed to access my account on 5 systems as limited by PSN.

Exactly, it's not piracy if you are allowed to do it through the rules, and terms laid out by PSN. Developers just don't like that rule.

Regardless, piracy is still number 1 on the PC. It's way easier to pirate stuff on this PC. Almost as easy as just simply installing a game. It requires jumping through way more hoops on the 360, and even MORE hoops on the PS3 (at least for now). That's why development of games has all but moved over to consoles (unless you're Blizzard), with PC's just sometimes getting ports.

Only 1 publisher and 2 games are on this, Capcom, Final Fight. No one else is even talking about this "gameshare problem", I'm just using my PSN account as intended. I'm glad Sony put this system in place on the PS3 to give some flexibility to the users.

I'd rather Sony cuts down the "share" rule to just two PS3s instead of five so that this kind of thing doesn't ever have to happen. I'll admit that I let my brother download stuff from my account, but only because he's not a hardcore gamer, so only like 10% of what I buy is something he might enjoy. Sharing it is better than him not ever doing anything on his PS3 besides play movies / watch Netflix.

Pretty lame. When will developers learn?

I'm not talking about PSN, I'm talking about the EULA you agree to when you buy the software. A publisher will tell you that by sharing software with users who haven't purchased the license to play it that you are breaking copyright law and therefore are pirating software. How this is morally any different than pirating software is beyond me and I find it absolutely ridiculous that you guys are justifying it.
Posted by bitcloud
@RsistncE: I'm not justifying it, but we aren't the people making accounts to share online and making groups to get cheap games. Piracy means we are somehow reproducing the software or using without authorization. We are ALLOWED to activate our accounts on 5 systems and use all our content on those 5 systems and even with this drm, we can still use it on 5 systems.

This isn't a workaround, hack on the system, it's a feature.

How Final Fight's drm works is basically, you can use it on 1 system every 24 hours. So after 24 hours, you can use it on another one of the 5 systems and then wait another 24 hours. This actually doesn't stop any people abusing gameshare(like making an account online and advertising to start an account for gameshare), since there is no multiplayer.

If you are going to talk about drm on PS Store content, you are going to include everything about PSN. Even other full games like Burnout Paradise don't implement this.

@bitcloud: Well first of all I'm referring to the fact that MANY people buy one game on a shared PSN, split the cost and then all download a copy to their consoles. To the developers and publishers this is the EXACT same thing as piracy. In a sense, it really is no different other than the fact that the system allows it to occur.

And again, you keep talking about PSN accounts which I am not talking about at all. PSN may allow you to legally game share, but that doesn't mean the EULA for the software itself is agreeing with you. In fact I am 100% certain that game sharing violates the EULA of every game out there; therefore game sharing is copyright infringement.

Checking the connection on start-up is fine by me and, yes I share PSN games with tons of people.

My qualm is if it ends up meaning I always have to have an active connection to keep playing it. Sometimes there's a minor hiccup on my connection and if that kicks me out of the game mid-checkpoint save then that's pretty lame.

Also, I'm not paying 15 bucks for Rearmed. Remember when GRIN asked fans how much they'd pay for a Bionic Commando Rearmed game?
