Black Mesa Mod Is Still Coming Out, Looks Incredible

We dare you to watch this new trailer for the Source Engine-based Half-Life remake without getting really excited.

Ever since the excellent-for-its-time Aliens TC mod for the original Doom, I've been in love with the idea of the first-person shooter total conversion. The idea is that a bunch of passionate, talented people get together (online, at least) and turn an existing commercial game into an entirely different experience, often one that's themed with a popular license. In practice, that's not much different than building a new retail game on an existing engine, but TCs always have this homebrewed, grassroots feel you can really get behind.

The problem is, a lot of total conversion-style projects die on the vine before you ever get to play them. The mod makers get busy with their real lives, or a corporate interest steps in with some fun cease-and-desist action, and then you never hear about the project again.

So now I'm doubly excited about Black Mesa, a fan remake of the original Half-Life running on the Source Engine. Not only does it look impressive as hell, but hey, it's actually going to come out! Black Mesa's been in production for a good four years now, so I'd almost given up on it--but the team just put out this new trailer, which, well, speaks for itself.

How does this trailer strike you? Personally, I couldn't be more excited about Black Mesa. The game looks damn near as good as I'd expect a commercial remake of Half-Life to look; nevermind that it's entirely fan-made and it's coming out for free. The official site is getting hammered right now, but check it out for more info on all the new features--like cooperative play and a focus on Half-Life 2 characters--they're rolling back into the original game. Maybe I'm leaning too much on fond remembrance here, but I prefer the isolated, solitary feel of the first Half-Life to the more character-driven atmosphere in the sequel. This seems like the best possible way to relive that experience, a decade later. Let's hope the final product is as impressive as this video.

Can't wait for this aswell, I never got to play the original Half Life, and I feel a remake would be a good way to play it.

I just REALLY hope the voice acting doesn't suck.
In Portal Prelude, I thought the people talking were AI for about half the game.

I agree thats why I prefered Half-Life over the 2nd but that doesn't mean HL2 wasn't a good game but HL was just such an amazing one worthy of 6 stars.

I've watched the trailer at least 6 times today!  Still blown away.

Honestly, I've thought many times about finishing Half-Life.  If I remember right, my brother in law and I were fighting the last boss who floats in the air when his comp crashed and never wanted to reboot.  So basically, I never saw the ending...  Since then, I bought a computer but I just couldn't face the outdated graphics of Half-Life since Half-Life 2 was already out!

This is probably the game I'm most looking forward to.

Wow, the trailer is really impressive. I hadn't heard of the mod in a while now and figured it would probably never come out. Great to see I can still look forward to this.

Wow, just wow.  The amount of time and effort this must have taken is pretty stunning, I don't think I've ever played a mod up to this quality... How the hell are Valve allowing this?  How are they that cool?

I didn't even know this was in the works, but was always wishing Valve would release something JUST like this.  This is a great thing.  I was actualy underwhelmed by HL2, just because its tone and atmosphere were completely different than that of the first one.  It was a completely different game, really.

I am psyched to be back in closed quarters, no definite story, except get the heck out of the facility and there is a creepy man watching you.

Brad's right, i did prefer the feel of the first game.  Having the guys that I would see get killed or kill myself (like Barney and the scientists) become real characters was disturbing to me.  I killed or had barney killed so many times, he lost his charm when he became a real character.

Dude i'd happily revisit Black Mesa like this, i've tried going back to the original half-life tons and tons of times but its so difficult to get it to feel like it did way back when, a source update like this looks totally bad ass, so many iconic moments updated it seems.

WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!? So suddenly my most wanted game for 2009 is a mod? Fuck Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 5 and Halo 3: ODST. Black Messa is the s(HiT) for 2009!!
And for Free???? Morrons should try to get valve to tag along(i imagine they would since they seem to be super down whit the mod community) and sell that shit for 50bucks on Steam and then later have it ported(by a real dev house) to consols and sell that shit for 60bucks. Its so nice, i would buy it twise!!!

Although I really wish people would make action trailers in a different way.  I mean, is this the format for eternity now?

A friend of mine is actually the one who made that trailer (Monkie-Junkie), and has been working with the Black Mesa Source guys for about a year now. He shows me snippets of gameplay over webcam every now and then, the teasing swine.

Anyway, he's estimating a release around June/July. Still quite a way off, but at least it's something. ;o
