Blizzard Gets Drunk on Panda Mystery, Announces Mists of Pandaria WoW Expansion

Enjoy the only headline of the day not to use the "Blizzard is Pandaren to the fans!" pun. Way too easy, guys. Way too easy.

Yep, this is happening.
Yep, this is happening.

Proving that Blizzard are the kings of the game industry when it comes to the long-con, the publisher announced today at its annual Blizzcon event that Mists of Pandaria, an expansion with roots originating in an elaborate April Fool's Day joke back in 2005, is actually a real thing that Blizzard is releasing next year.

Originally joked as a mysterious "fifth race," the Pandaren have nonetheless been a much talked-about part of the lore of World of Warcraft in subsequent years and expansions. Now, this new expansion will finally let you create a giant Panda Bear with a penchant for kung-fu fighting, and play him/her as a member of either the Horde or the Alliance. This is the first race in the game that doesn't automatically start out as part of either faction, once again proving that bears cannot be trusted.

In addition to the new playable race, Mists of Pandaria will up the level cap to 90, and add new talent systems, PVE scenarios, a new pet battle system, and a new dungeon challenge mode. Word on the street is that Mists of Pandaria is playable in some form at Blizzcon, so expect more salient details to flow throughout the web during the weekend.

In the meantime, I present to you the following song in celebration of this new Pandaren dominance.

If you played WC3 and Frozen Throne, you should know where the Pandas came from. You know, since they were in WC3 and all.

If Pandas can be either Horde or Alliance, can they talk to each other? I assume that all Pandas start in Pandaria but does that mean that there are Pandas who only know how to speak Horde in the area and others who only speak Alliance? Wouldn't they all speak Pandarian and then learn a second language associated to their faction afterwards? I'm guessing the last shred of logic has been tossed out the door for this expansion.

I guess that they will be able to talk to each other all the time and will get orcish or comman depending on which side they join they will probably have a quest to choose your side that includes learning the language somehow

@rentfn: yep that was me during the D3 Q&A =P

@people crying that this is a joke, wow has always had joke things in it eg the lost vikings in uldermen, simon says quest in dragonspire all the holiday events, the theater bosses in kara, the way they have worked them into the law at this point is nice, the cataclysm has revealed pandaria and the horde/allli get washed up after a naval battle and all the player pandas were on a giant turtle (I wonder how many discworld jokes will be on it) which I guess will land somewhere when you finish the zone

So much flaming about this expansion. For absolutely no reason. Someone wrote the following to the announcement post on one of the official WoW sites.

This idea came from 3 ingredients: kung fu panda, avatar (the last airbender) and WEED. However, i do like the senery and the new class but the pandas are just... well... WTF?

Perhaps this kind of complete ignorance is to be expected from 8 year olds who believe that pandas were invented by Dreamworks, but still, pretty unbelievable response from some people.

I'm not going to take the stance of THIS IS SHIT! before we even see anything.

Well as someone that played throughout vanilla, TBC, WoTLK and Cataclysm I am. Cataclysm was terrible, but it actually seemed promising when it was announced. This just looks all kinds of lame, even the talent system seems to be getting dumbed down.

It's really quite funny to see what the game has become, it has definitely gotten progressively more goofy over the years but this move really kicks that into overdrive, I will say that the new areas look nice, though.

and I didn't watch the footage, I just looked at the screenshots and read the feature lists. This game has been getting worse every expansion (although, TBC was fantastic raiding wise), and this looks like the dullest one yet.

Usually every expansion has made me renew and play solid for a few months (or more). It won't be happening this time I can say for 100% certain. They've even announced Scholomance and Scarlet Monastery as level 90 heroics, because WoW needed even more recycling of content, right? Cataclysm was bad enough for that. Jeez.

I totally agree with you, after I killed Deathwing I'm out as well. I can't be bothered with the next expansion. Not even because of Panda's or the Monk class.. Just because the game is not really changing. I bet you at level 90, when you are geared up for raiding, there is nothing for you to do in the actual world but to Que up for BG/Arena/Dungeons or play around with your pet.

The reason for recycling SM and Scholo is because of Nostalgia, I think they are trying to keep the people that played back then in the game. The same reason they showed old Raggy and Ony in the trailer. The same reason they are giving free Diablo 3, WoW beta and a mount with the annual sub! Trying to keep people playing while other, maybe more awesome games are coming out in the meantime!

to all the people who dont really play WoW that are talking shit about this; were you talking about WoW, last week? How many people are going to rant and rave publicly about this to people over the next few months? That's why I think this is a brilliant move on Blizzard's part. It's crazy, it's whacky and no one really thought they would actually do it. Personally, I love it, but I love WoW for the humor and for the deadly serious stuff. Look around you. Life has more than one tone. You can tell a fart joke in the middle of an earthquake and people will laugh.

Haters gonna hate, but this is going to bring a metric ton of people back to WoW.

The talent changes make sense imo, its the same as what they're doing with Diablo 3.

It pretty much boils down to the fact that 2% more damage is shitty (and in most cases, compulsory) and a new skill is pretty neat.

I wont be resubbing though, just tired of the gameplay.

Warcraft has ALWAYS mixed humor with serious fantasy, they are not mutually exclusive concepts. Yes, there are panda people in the new expansion, but that doesn't mean they can't have any serious narrative alongside it. Are panda-people more ridiculous than say...cow-people? The landscape and areas look really well done, which is always a big deal for me in MMOs.

I've always come back for every expansion, and I think every one (yes, even cataclysm) has made the game better. I've played a LOT of MMOs, and none of them really hold a candle up to WoW in terms of overall package still. I'll probably pick this up as well (still considering pulling the trigger on the Annual Sub).

I'm particularly excited for the revised talents, if they actually provide choice. Never before has the talent system ACTUALLY provided choice unless you were only interested in soloing. There was always one way to put your points, which...why even bother with the system then.

I don't think World of Warcraft has ever intended to take itself seriously. People who get all butthurt about lore will have trouble finding any large IP fun and interesting because they're too busy picking apart small things.

Personally, I don't play WoW because of any of that, I play it because my friends do.

Haters gonna hate, play what you like is a good way to think about games.

So goddamn stupid. Hey Blizzard, why don´t you make fun of your own gameworld some more and add a playable anime-cat-race? Wasn´t the whole story of Warcraft supposed to be taken seriously at one point?

Guess catering to your (12 year old) fans beats every other intention you might have.

World of Warcraft at launch had walking cows as a playable race, your point?

Pandaren also have been in the Warcraft universe since War3, with some pretty deep connections to the history of the world.

Okay so I take that back. Warcraft has been fucked since Warcr.. oh excuse me, Kung Fu Pandacraft 3.

I like how people I know still keep talking about the fiction like it´s "high fantasy" or something. Hilarious! Especially since some of the same people "can´t take Star Wars seriously anymore" since Episode 1 (or since the Ewoks).

To people thinking this is an act of desperation:

Dude, it's still WoW. They've been losing people but are still by a ridiculous margin the most popular MMO out there. ToR is a threat but it's not going to beat WoW. Straight up, just is not going to happen. Best case scenario is it actually brings some legitimate competition for a change.

Also, it's Blizzard guys. Blizzard isn't desperate about anything. A desperate company does not take it goddamn sweet time to release everything like they do. This is a corporation that develops insanely popular and successful PC (mac too, I guess) ONLY games, and they aren't even on Steam! Practically unheard of these days.

This is a carefully decided move by Blizz. Like it or hate it, there is nothing desperate about this.
