Blizzard Talks Diablo III's Launch And Future

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime issues a lengthy letter for the Diablo community.

No Caption Provided

By most measures, Diablo III has been a huge success for Blizzard Entertainment. Successfully coming out of the gate would be enough for most companies, but Blizzard games tend to have a lengthy shelf life. Two months after the release of Diablo III, the company has issued a letter to fans about the last 60 days and what's next.

Penned by Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, the letter touches upon a number of hotly debated topics related to Diablo III. I’d encourage you to read the letter in full, but I’ve pulled out the highlights:

On the severe server issues the game experienced when it launched:

“We’ve never gone from 0 to more than 6 million players across multiple continents within a few days with a brand-new game. For Diablo III, we looked at historical sales for Blizzard games and other top-selling PC games and watched preorder numbers. We even upped our estimates to ensure we had additional capacity, or so we thought. In the end, it just wasn’t enough, and that is something we will work hard to conquer for future releases.

In response to the immediate and overwhelming demand for the game, the team worked around the clock to support all regions, increase capacity, ship additional hardware to our datacenters, and troubleshoot and fix bugs as they sprang up. While things have by and large been running smoothly for several weeks now, various game-related issues have come up that we have either already responded to or are continuing to investigate (such as the latency issue some of you are experiencing) and make adjustments for.”

On what’s coming in the next series of incremental patches:

“You’ve seen some of that work already in patch 1.0.3, and you’ll see additional improvements with patch 1.0.4. On the game balance front, this update will contain changes designed to further deliver on the team’s goal of promoting “build diversity,” with buffs to many rarely used, underpowered class abilities. Another topic we’ve seen actively discussed is the fact that better, more distinct Legendary items are needed. We agree. Patch 1.0.4 will also include new and improved Legendary items that are more interesting, more powerful, and more epic in ways you probably won’t be expecting.

We’re also working on a number of interface updates, including social improvements that will allow players to more easily view their friends’ achievements, more quickly join games, and more efficiently communicate with each other. In addition, we’ll be making updates to the auction house in the future to provide players with better information through tooltips and notices, offer improved search functionality, and more.”

On the theory that Diablo III’s always-on requirement was more about DRM than anything else:

“While we’ve never said that this requirement guarantees that there will be no cheating or game cracks, it does help us battle those problems (we have not found any fully functional cracks). More important to us is that the online requirement is critical for the long-term integrity of the game experience. I fully understand the desire to play Diablo III offline; however, Diablo III was designed from the beginning to be an online game that can be enjoyed with friends, and the always-online requirement is the best way for us to support that design. The effectiveness of the online elements -- including the friends list and cross-game communication; co-op matchmaking; persistent characters that you can use by yourself, with others, and in PvP; and some of our customer support, service, and security components -- is tied directly to the online nature of the game. These and other online-enabled features are essential to our design for Diablo III. That said, there are still improvements we believe we can make to expand the online experience and make co-op play even more rewarding, and this will remain one of our priorities moving forward. Overall, while there are some downsides to the online-only approach, I still believe this was the best long-term decision for the game.”

Finally, on the subject of creating a more satisfying endgame for the most hardcore of players:

“We’re also working on a gameplay system that will provide players who have max-level, high-powered characters new goals to strive for as an alternative to the “item hunt.” We’re not ready to get into specifics just yet, but I can say that we’re actively taking your feedback into account as we plan out the future of the game.”

To the people arguing that it's unreasonable to expect more than 50 hours from Diablo III: We feel this way because Blizzard has set the precedent of the Diablo games being entertaining for years on end as a result of clever itemization and skill designs lending to a plethora of different builds as well as online interactions. Comparing a Diablo game with something like, say, Max Payne 3 is completely missing the mark.

Diablo III fails pretty hard in all the respects that its predecessors established when it comes to long-term playability.

I feel like D3 is a game that I can come and go to. I had my 50 or so hours of fun, more than worth the money and now I am going to take a break and let it set for a while. It will still be awesome when I get back and with the changes they are making it will likely be a different game when I come back. I look forward to it.

In a vacuum, D3 is a pretty good loot-based ARPG. Again, if you got 100 hours out of it, that's great value especially compared to the value you get from most games. But judging a game like that where the previous installments are as beloved and popular as D2 is impossible. Fans have played Diablo 2 for a decade. No matter how you try to explain it, the basic problem is people who played D2 for such a long time don"t see the potential for that much replayability in Diablo 3. I wasn't one of these people, but I can sympathize with them.

My own personal problems with the game are not that I won't be playing it for a decade. I dislike the idea of the RMAH, releasing a game without all of it's components and others.

While I appreciate the attempt to honestly address and acknowledge the community's issues with the game, it rings pretty hollow now. I hope they are able to improve things, but D3's base design mechanics have some severe issues. Without drastically overhauling everything, I don't see how they can fix it.

I was going to write something that was essentially this, so instead I'll just quote it.

I don't know. D3 is such a fantastic game, but they can't patch what is ultimately my biggest problem with it; the atmosphere.

And I'm not necessarily talking about just the visual style, that's only one piece of it. The overwrought and highly flawed writing, the cartoonish animations, the voiceacting, the auction house, the online intrusions, etc; all of this make Diablo 3 feel like a "videogame", and not an "experience". There is no atmosphere anymore; I don't feel like I'm in an actual, dreadful place like Diablo 2 made me feel.

Everything piece of it just feels shallow and compromised in order to feed into the auction house, the one thing that ruins the whole point of Diablo. It's tragic.

I agree.

The visual style still looks "wow-like" with round, cartoony textures where most noticeable are things like piles of logs in new tristram and the game has this drab filter over it probably in response to the criticisms of it being too colorful. As someone who played wow and d2 like crazy, the compromise they did didn't work.

Anyways, I still loved the game and put over a hundred hours in. I haven't even gotten to the last difficulty yet and it's already challenging and I love the new skill system. Feels like I get a new skill every time I level.

My personal gripe is that I wish normal difficulty didn't exist. I liked the story and the cg movies were damn impressive, but normal was so damn easy it completely sucked away any tension, build up, or immersion the story and cg has done every time you fight the "lords" of hell. They die in seconds, roll credits, and I get a splash screen telling me to go play new game+.

I still love you d3 and hope d4 comes out with even better success.

People throw the word "entitlement" around a lot, but I think it definitely applies here.

The amount of immaturity people spew off surrounding Diablo is unreal. Its a fucking game. It doesn't even have a subscription! Blizzard doesn't have to do fuckall for the customers. What don't people get about that? You don't like their stuff, then don't fucking buy it!

The irony is that all the people whining probably have 50+ hours put into the game. If you hate the game so much, then why didn't you stop playing it before then!? Its not like a portion of your taxes are being used to fund the game or something. I agree that Inferno is total crap, but JESUS, people... learn to chill out and let go.

If anything, the one thing I want Morhaime to comment on is that guy they pulled away from the mic at a recent Q&A. He asked if Blizzard themselves were placing high-end items on the AH (since there are no names associated with the actual auctions themselves) in order to turn a profit. They pulled the guy away and threw him out of the Q&A.

Is there a video on this? I really want to see this. Or at least a source.

I really feel like their priority should be fixing the auction house. It is a giant piece of shit at the moment, and I'm talking about the economy or other things Blizzard can't really control, but there are just so many things that are fundamentally broken about it that anyone who has used any type of online auction at any point in their entire life could see.

@Hightake_Shroom: True. I am >< close to buying extra inventory space and an extra char slot on pso2, its a fantastic game.(which ship are you on?)

D3 is marketed on the premised that it would be an enjoyable grind, something you would spend hundreds of hours on just like in D2. With the laughable writing/story,incredibly annoying npcs(covetous shen...shudder),terrible in game cutscenes, the loot grind at end game should be the focus. Half way into hell difficulty, things start getting very annoying and tiring.Inferno is just an absolute chore. I would think that most people including me, spent dozens of hours playing the game, hoping that patches would make it good, but it just didnt. These are not the same people who made D2.

I queued up on launch day and bought 4 copies of the game, one for myself and 3 others for my friends. They have also stopped playing.

Hopefully in a couple of months time, the patches would have made the game better, and not an auction house simulator.Till then, Phantasy star online 2 has my gaming dollars, even if i have to jump through hoops to play it.

Beyond the obvious Real Money Auction House debacle, I get the feeling that Blizzard will never be able to satisfy many former Diablo II players because they essentially want the same feeling you got from Diablo II playing it for the first time. When you eat Chocolate cake for the first time, you love it. You try different flavors of chocolate cake but it will never be the same feeling you got when you first tasted chocolate cake, that experience was new.

Blizzard could of NEVER satisfied these people.

if they changed D3 to much they would cry like children that their beloved franchise has been ruined and its not longer the game it was and FUCK BLIZZARD!!!!

if they don't change it enough the is a rehash and all they are doing is cashing in on the diablo name and adding nothing new and FUCK BLIZZARD!!!

I feel like I've been lucky by not having 11 years of Diablo 2 under my belt. I absolutely love Diablo 3, and I think it's because I'm seeing it solely on its own merits. My time with 2 was minimal at best, and I never played 1. I didn't even want 3 until I watched the GB coverage. So I do wonder if the ferocity of the rage from fans is simply because it's not Diablo 2: Now With A New Box.

I'm not saying that many complaints aren't valid, but all of these "THIS IS THE WORST GAME EVER MADE I ONLY GOT 300 HOURS OUT OF IT I WANT A REFUND" rants plaguing the Blizzard forums make me wonder.

I was verry positively surprised how fun this game is! I'm currently playing my demon hunter on act 2 infenro and working my way up to face act 3. The only thing that the game is lacking for me is PvP. other then that I'm having a blast!

How come everyone is so disappointed? Could it be becuase I havent played Diablo 2? Or maybe everyone is going into the game thinking "I'm Gonna make a living with this game! I wont have to work again!"?

One thing I'd like to know, I keep reading posts here and on other forums about how people played D2 for "eleven years straight", but how many people are we really talking about? How many people honestly played D2 that much? Mind you I'm not talking about people who fired it up maybe once a year for a couple 4 hour play sessions and then didn't touch it for another 12+ months, I'm talking about people who honestly played it for more than say 10 or 20 hours a year. Were there a million people who played D2 for several hundred hours a year for eleven years? Somehow I doubt it. As usual I suspect the most passionate players are a very vocal minority on the internet. I'm not saying there weren't a ton of D2 players who played it like crazy back in the day. I'm just suggesting that over the years it slowly dwindled down to a small, super dedicated group of long term addicts and that it's disingenuous to use this "eleven years straight" argument as if there were hundreds of thousands of players obsessively playing D2 for over a decade.

Typical PR bullshit. The fact that I experience latency in a game when I'm playing by myself is inexcusable. And before people start rabbling on about my connection I have a 250GB down and 25GB up connection speed that I pay 150 dollars a month for. It is entirely Blizzards side and their fault because of the always online component that taxes their shitty system. And the simple fact that this fucker has the audacity to say "SOME" people is absurd. Further to the point there are people that I know that have lost loot from level 50+ characters (2 Barbarians, 1 Witch Doctor, and 1 Mage) because of some hacker/gold farmer in China. Granted they didn't have the authenticator at the time, but the simple fact that you have to buy an authenticator to play a single player game (granted it has heavy doses of co-op but it is still at it's base single player) to keep your build intact is disgusting.

Blizzard should be fucking ashamed of themselves and the media that just go along with the crap that they're peddling should hang their heads as well. What happened to journalistic integrity and looking out for the consumer?

It's a good game, in fact it's an amazing game. But it's a terrible fucking product. Period. And all this time after it came out I'm still pissed off over it. It's unacceptable. This is the year 2012. Shit like this should not just be thought of as "fine" or "okay".

D3's greatest crime is that it absolutely fails to live up to its predecessor in almost every way that matters. I still sunk a good 250+ hours into it, and even killed inferno Siegebreaker on hardcore before 1.03. When the patch I killed a few champ packs and realized that all challenge had been removed from the game. I logged off and never looked back. I rarely complain about this, but when I do it is not because I didn't get my money's worth, it's because I was hoping for a worthy sequel.

Maybe if it had some of D2's qualities I could have stayed for those. A satisfying and diverse loot system, great itemization, meaningful build experimentation and a gameplay experience centered around boss/champion kills rather than goblins and chests -- all features that could have saved D3 for me.

All the people complaining about lag or other sever issues need to grow the fuck up. I live 2000 miles from the closest server and pay $30 a month for my internet and guess what? It's been fast enough to get me to Diablo on inferno with people from Asia and the mainland US in my party at once. If you've got a $100+ internet connection and you're in the comments talking about how you cant beat Acts 3/4 Inferno or even Hell, you should stop playing, I've had you in my groups before and you are bad. Stop dying repeatedly in my groups and just quit, I'd rather someone who knows what they're doing take your place.

@Nonapod: There are a lot of people who played D2 for maybe not eleven years, but 6, 7, 8 years. And I'm sure more played it for eleven years longer than you might think. People still play WoW, is it really that hard to believe?

Also, I'm sick of them trying to convince me the always online thing was needed. All they needed to do is have Ranked and Social online play. Ranked requires characters that are online only, social allows any, but no trading between Social and Ranked characters (ranked and social can trade among other ranked and social characters respectively).

It's a bummer for people who payed for the game, like me, who have limited bandwidth that end up without internet at points because it was all used up before the month ends, and they can't play the damn game because the internet is down. That is silly, especially with how many people play this game alone or only with friends and never get serious with it. It's a bummer when I do have internet, and I have to wait to play the game because their servers are full. It's not an MMO, and I shouldn't have to deal with the downsides of those kinds of games. That makes sense for an MMO like WoW because it's essential to the experience.

I'm not enraged now that the game actually mostly works, and they were at least smart enough that lag almost never results in a death (I've lagged and then caught up to myself being dead a whole one time), but the fact is that they didn't need to do what they did, and they could have found a way around it. It's frustrating for someone like me that played all of Diablo 2 on a computer that had no internet access, that they make it a requirement. If it was like WoW, and used that much bandwidth (WoW used surprisingly a lot of bandwidth, at least as far as I could tell), I wouldn't likely be able to play the game much each month, because of my cap being a fraction of the comcast cap.

I love Diablo 3 but once I beat it I had no desire to go back and do it again. Im glad to hear about some of the changes and hope its enough to draw me back in. They should just create a quest creator for players that allows us to download new quest from the community that way at least we'll have new content all the time.
