Borderlands "Zombie Island of Dr. Ned" DLC Announced

Wait, don't they need to get the retail game out the door first?

Gearbox's loot-driven wasteland romp Borderlands ain't even on store shelves till next week--with a PC release following on Steam the week after that--but the developer is already spilling the beans about its post-release plans for downloadable content.

Described as "the first in a series" of add-ons, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned will run you $10 on all three platforms. Here's a brief description of what's in there.

Tasked with keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, Dr. Ned (who is not related to Dr. Zed from Fyrestone) does his job a little too well, creating zombies and other abominations that now run rampant in this region. Players will have to work alongside Dr. Ned as they embark on a quest to cure the inhabitants of Jakobs Cove in this full-fledged expansion filled with new enemies, new quests and rare loot drops.

More importantly, here's what it looks like.

The real question, of course, is exactly how much content and how big a landmass this pack entails. Jeff's closing in on the level cap in Borderlands right next to me, so we'll have a full review of the shipping game next week, and you can look for this DLC pack to hit "later this year."

I'm tired of buying incomplete games.

I'll just wait a year for the GotY/Super/Ultimate/Mega/All of the content is actually in this box edition which gets released at a lower price point.

There's no reason to jump in on day 01 only to pay twice the price for half the content. Bethesda and Capcom have taught me to wait for the final version while the early adopters finish beta testing their games.

always drives me nuts when people complain about companies offering DLC.....guess what people, these companies are not operating a charity....if you dont like it, dont buy it, and if enough people follow suit they will be forced to change their practices.  obviously, there is demand for these products.

" So, Gearbox, you've already started designing this stuff, eh? Tell me then... Why is this not in the box of the actual game? *Cough* micro-transactions... *Cough* I'm not disappointed to see it, certainly looks great: I'm just disappointed to see such a blatant marketing strategy at work. "
You could answer this yourself: the code goes gold & has been tested. It's done. Packed & shipped to a distribution center.  You can't just call them up & say, stop everything, we need to include this new content we just created.  The product would never get out the door if they did that.

What IS happening is that they are probably seeing a massive build-up of pre-orders & since that is instant profit, they're going off to create DLC with the profit they made.  My only question is: how much DLC will there be & will it come out later on disk (for us console users) or if they'll create a GOTY edition (assuming it gets GOTY).

" Here's what I'm thinking.  How big is this game? Because if Jeff is on his second playthrough just to hit the level cap, wouldnt that make the game's story or lenght short as it is? Yes sure there is multiplayer and all and thats fine., but in the long run it doesn't seam like its not very lenghty to begin charging what they are?.  Now you add in content that they could have been working on before certification. It seams like they could have given the fact it doesn't seam like there is enough content to begin with.  The other problem is the how much they're charging. Now $10 is a bit for an area. If theyre adding in new shit ontop of that like guns and such then yea its worth the purchase.  Both sides of the arguement have good valid points. Me? I'm buying the game anyway regardless cause it looks fun, but these are the things I'm wondering. *shrugs* "
Wtf duder!  The game developers already said there is at least 100 hours of content.  Probably Jeff has put in a straight 40 hours, if not more.  We don't know how long he's had the game.
Posted by GBXennui
@FellOpenIan: It's not really "incomplete" just because more content is going to be released.  That's like saying a game isn't complete until all its expansions and sequels are out.  At some point, the developer has to lock the content and press the game, but with current gen consoles we have ways to offer people who want it extra content after release.  Not put in things that "should have" been in the game, but offer extra stuff - for those who are interested in it.

I'm glad to hear there is plans to support this game with DLC.  I'd rather have this scenario than what we saw from Too Human.  That game was released and poof ... nothing from Silicon Knights.  Plus it looks bad ass - who doesn't want to blast away at zombies!!!
Posted by Feigr

While the whole zombie thing is completely overplayed by now it's nice to see that they are continuing to work for the game. It's bad though that they are charging PC gamers for the DLC, they should only charge console users imo.

@GBXennui:

I love the giant bomb forums, since though we get plenty of DLC whiners we ALSO get a good number of folks who understand how the game development process works. DLC released a month after the game releases is totally justified assuming it's being worked on throughout the final QA portion of the packaged game and enters its own gold-crunch after shipdate.

Also, just to preempt any arguments about why those guys aren't working on the main game: plenty of designers and artists and engineers are already working on new projects in a studio during a game's certifcation and final QA period. This is normal; why can't they be working on DLC too?
Posted by MeatSim

This means that there are 2 4 player Co-Op games with zombies this year.

Some people don't seem to understand the game development process..

This content isn't in the retail release of the game, because the game has likely been finished for months and months.  They've just been cleaning things up and bug testing, but the actual designers and programmers would have finished work on the game a long time ago.  And with the popularity of DLC these days, they would have moved on to creating new content they can sell seperatly as soon as possible, so it can be released as quickly as possible.

The content can't just be added into the game for release, do you expect them to keep delaying the game to add in more and more?  Then we end up with Gran Turismo 5, were the game is never done because they just keep adding to it.  This content was designed to be released seperatly as DLC and has been worked on seperatly from the actual game.  While some developers have been evil with locking off or cutting out content to sell later on, I think it's made a lot of people very paranoid and ignorant to how the whole process works.

Would you rather they didn't work on content at all until after the game was released?  That way we would have to wait months for it to be developed, by which point most people will have lost interest in the game.

looking forward to it

Games are made on the publishers deadlines, DLC allows the developer to break them without losing profit.

I can see why people are not happy about the dlc being talked about before the game even comes out,  Feels like I am buying a non-complete game!  But if you don't like it then just simply don't buy! I on the other hand love the look of this game

Posted by StaticWind

 @Ockman:
They didn't develop the DLC during the game's development. The content on the disc would have been finalised months ago and Gearbox would have spent the last few months fixing bugs and polishing the game. It would be pretty irresponsible of them to have their development team sitting around the office doing nothing for a couple of months waiting until it was 'acceptable' to start working on DLC. You should be thankful that Gearbox and other studios are so dedicated that they begin immediately creating more content for their games, and if you don't feel that way then you don't have to buy it. You can still buy Borderlands and experience the game in full, it's not as if they cut out a chunk of the retail release so they could make more money.

even if Gearbox is righteous in their Day-One DLC and actually had spare time to make it, if they help Day-One DLC become common then it opens the door for all kinds of asshole video game makers to actually take out original game stuff and sell it as DLC.

Maybe you're right,  but when you(as the dev)start to talk and show screens of DLC b4 the game even drops, you invite the criticism from gamers.  And there's no way the stuff thery're touting was deved up after cert as this stuff takes time.  It's obvious plans were made b4 release, and at some time during development,  to hold some content for DLC and not include it in the game.

Granted this is the state of business these days in the video games industry, but it still smells like rip-off to some, understandably.  Most of the big devs are doing it ...and it's a standard now, unfortunately imo.  Maybe not a smart one though.  Gearbox(and other devs of course)could be smarter and hold the PR for DLC stuff 'till the game is out for a while and then share the details as the word grows about how good, and replayable the released game is and, subsequently, how  DLC worthy the game is.  Just seems stupid in a marketing sense to me.  And I have no prob spending the xtra $ if the game itself is great; just don't treat the consumer(especially us core gamers)like a dunce because they're not.

Any disclosure is too much imo, and invites the complaints is what I'm saying....just let the game stand on it's own for a while, and then pump the DLC for an established game is what I think would make way more sense.  I want to play the game and it's a day one for me...., just saying there's not a need to invite the wrath from gamers is all, from a marketing standpoint foremost.  I'll but any and all DLC for a good game for the gameplay first and to support good devs and excellent games on principle for two.

Yeah......like the first post I had in this thread said,  that's basically how it used to be, and everyone would always complain about developers not making enough DLC.    Besides......this is making DLC for an "established game."   The game has been completed......the huge majority of the designers/staff have absolutely nothing to do, so instead of taking a break they started work on DLC......which should be considered a good thing for the gamers.  The only DLC that kinda gets on my nerves is the ones that are like 200kb in size and are obviously "unlock codes" to give access to stuff that is already on the disc.    If it is decent sized DLC, that is being released around 6 months after the initial game release, like this seems to be and the MW2 map pack that was announced(which people bitched about too), then I have no problem with it.

I don't give a flying fuck about some developer's inability to time-manage their employees. I care about games like Fallout 3 and Street fighter IV being made completely irrelevant by the inevitable ultimate version which gets released around one year later for at least half of the cost of the original game plus all of the added DLC.  (in most cases even less)

Developers, in a poor attempt to avoid used game sales, are teaching us to wait for the complete versions of their games. The games are incomplete. If they weren't then they wouldn't be making DLC and expansions. I still want to own and play these games. I just want to own the complete package. I'm no longer interested in Borderlands or Dragon Age because I know that there's at least one year's worth of DLC to be had. So why not wait that one year and buy it all together in one box for half of what the early adopters are paying for the same amount of content? So I can play their incomplete game earlier? No thanks. I want the whole shebang for $50-60 and that's just what they are teaching us to do = wait for the better and less expensive version because we all know that it's coming.

This isn't like going from one game to the sequel. These are incremental upgrades at worst and full-on expansions at best. There is zero incentive for me to run out and purchase Borderlands on day 01 when I know that somewhere down the line an actual complete version is coming. The early adopters and purchasers of the DLC are essentially paying the way for me to own the same amount of content for half of what they paid and all because they had to have it right away.

That's the plan boys and girls; nickle and dime your early adopters and reward the fence sitters who wait a year. Don't be mad at us for waiting. Be mad at yourself for being impatient and paying double.

I'm not mad at anyone....if you don't want to buy it and want to wait, then wait.......if you want to buy now and buy DLC as it comes out, then do that.   If you don't want any of it period, then don't buy anything.     The game is NOT incomplete.   The game that is coming out next week is Borderlands......it will have optional DLC in the future.....that does not make it incomplete.   From what you said you seem to have more of a problem with "GotY editions" that come with the DLC for the same price as the original, which is a completely different subject/argument.   All that is happening is console games are getting more and more PC-like, in the sense of expansions(albeit smaller in size usually, but smaller in price as well), and most people just seem incapable of understanding what is going on or how game development works.

This is precisely why Gearbox should stfu about their DLC stuff.  There's no need to piss people off and lose sales.  Very shortsighted marketing imo, that'll turn some gamers off.  And Borderlands is not established yet!  The fucking game isn't even out yet, nor reviewed by any of the bigger sites yet last I looked.  And to think this DLC stuff, yes 3 friggin screens, is new since going gold is just ignorant or blind fanboyism...they've been working on this 'DLC' for a while and have made business decisions to keep it as an add on and not have the whole of the content up for initial release.  They(Gearbox)deserve these doubts by bringing it to the public now...their own damn fault imo.

You have to remember that they've already been working 2 years on this game, and I have been waiting patiently all that time. You also have to remember that we don't know how big this game is going to be on release, so don't bust pre-release announcements of DLC. They could have WANTED to put it on the disc, but MAYBE they RAN OUT OF SPACE. I followed the forums and whatnot and they had more ideas than they had memory to make use of, and I'd rather this be on one disc with priced DLC add-ons rather than have more than one disc to change out in the middle of playing. Call me lazy, but I'm just being honest here.

Also, it's $10. And it's a DLC. YOU. DON'T. HAVE. TO. GET. IT. But if you do, at least it's relatively cheap.

About the actual DLC, great, more fucking zombies :D

I don't see why everyone is getting so pissed off.  Even if GB was able to put the content into the game (which they arent), it'd just sell for 10 dollars more anyways, and does nobody remember how Bethesda announced that there would be extensive DLC for Fallout 3 before that game hit? And oh what a terrible game that turned out to be... *note the sarcasm..

Wow.....just straight to insults, huh?   Of course, they had planned to release DLC.....any major game does at this point.  Most likely it is something they had thought about putting into the actual game, buf cut it for some reason(besides just to make it DLC), which means yes, they would have had some work/models/etc. done already.  However, it would not have been something they could have gotten into the actual game without some sort of delays.   Announcing DLC and showing 3 screenshots of it only a week before the games actual release shouldn't piss people off, it should just make them realize they are planning to have DLC for the game and support it past initial release. As I said earlier, only thing that should piss people off is if the DLC is out in like less than a month, or if it is a super small download that appears to be nothing more than an "unlock code."   Either way, I'm done trying to talk common sense into people, here or anywhere else for that matter, just leads to frustration.

@FellOpenIan: You are saying this as if this only applies to video games. This applies to everything. Any product you buy today will be improved and refined and will come down in price. Any computer you buy will be improved upon and become cheaper. If you bought an Xbox 360 Premium at launch you will have paid more money than it costs today to buy the superior Elite. If, as you say, you don't care about getting something right away I honestly don't see what your problem is. If you want to wait and get the GOTY version with all the DLC a year from now then do so. I don't see how Gearbox developing the retail release for another year and releasing it with all the planned DLC on the disc presents a different result. If anything you stand to gain from this situation, because GOTY versions, as you say, often are sold at lower prices than launch versions. If Gearbox released Borderlands next year with all the planned DLC as part of the game then you would have to pay more than you would in the current situation.

i am not gonna post here for fear of being violated due to my opinion. wow there is a ton of hate on this page. They are called opinions. Respect them and stop getting so personal.

This dlc announcement doesn't bother me since its right near the release meaning they couldn't fit in into the game. I do get annoyed in situations like modern warfare 2 where they were talking about about map packs already in the early summer. Obviously they wouldn't be able to fit the 4-6(i'm assuming) maps that they probably have planned for dlc, I bet theres lots of situations where dlc is part of their planning for the games development, not something you do when you're finished making the game, and thats the real shame. people just see a dlc announcement and they assume the worst

Fuck you's this game shall last long still with a wow factor and I would have payed more for this game and here's my chance oh and I get some more content. see I'm happy, this dlc is for the people that like the game and want to pay more to see more.

"Can you guys please stop BITCHING!?!? Holy hell if you knew anything about the development of this game you would know that Gearbox announced that they started to work on DLC after the game went into certification. Meaning AFTER the point where additional content could be added to the game. They announced this a while ago. This is not a DLC scam...maybe if you guys understand how the development process works you wouldn't all be acting like whiny little bitches... "

After watching the quick look for this game i am really excited to play it. ( i just wish i could get a few of my friends to feel the same way) But does it say anywhere that the DLC will actually raise the level cap?
Further more, if its worth a few more hours of a game play, especially a multiplayer game that i am going to get hundreds of hours of game time out of anyway, i don't mind paying 10 bucks for some extra content.

i'm worried this will turn into a Far Cry 2 DLC situation...will this come out for the store bought PC version? or just the steam version...because if that's the case, i really shouldn't have to wait an extra week to get an extendable version.

I dont see them setting up shop for just the store bought version...or maybe they could release multiple add ons in a pack down the line.

14 hours and 35 minutes until release. I'm glad I preordered my game!

And you know what I'm gonna get? A $10 Jakob's Cove when it comes out, months from now.  Why? Because this game looks that badass to me.

And to the people worried about PC-releases of DLC, the game will take 6 more days until it's released on PC. I'm sure it'll still have the downloadable content. It just makes sense, with how well Gearbox has been supporting its followers.

this will probably be the only game where i wont resist every piece of DLC... new zones and especially loot = instant buy :(
