Bungie Releases Reach Image That Suggests DLC Is Incoming

More points and achievements, you say? That sounds like DLC additions to us.

It appears as if Bungie is trying to tell us that the first bit of meaningful Halo: Reach additional content isn't too far from release. In the studio's latest weekly update post, Bungie embedded two images clearly showing Reach's Gamerscore lifted to 1250 from 1000 and its achievements upped to 59 from 49--both of which are boosts indicative of a big content drop. Seemingly nodding to the pictures beforehand, Bungie led them with an all-too suggestive mention of additional new "stuff" coming down the pipeline in a possible second October update.

The aforementioned images were dropped in a section of the post dedicated to explaining how to install Reach to the Xbox 360's hard drive, while the talk of new "stuff" was placed after a meaty listing of things Bungie plans to change, tweak, or add into Reach's matchmaking (example: a SWAT-exclusive playlist, finally). These aren't exactly the places where one would tease DLC or other additional bits of content for a game as popular as Halo: Reach--unless, of course, one was attempting to circumvent traditional marketing or something--so it's possible this was just accidental or means nothing for the time being.

As Joystiq notes, Halo 3 ended up with an extra 750 Gamerscore, so what looks to be coming to Reach isn't shouldn't exactly strike you as a surprise. It'll be interesting to see, though, if DLC (or perhaps a points-adding update) hits as quickly as it looks like it could for the game.

Interesting.  I'm sure I'll buy whatever they put out, but DLC so soon after release...  I'd rather they just include stuff they already have in the tank in the original release.

I agree, I hate it when companies do that but I'm not sure that's the case here.  First off, the there's no official release date... all this theorizing seems to be based on one screen shot showing some achievements which is pretty inconclusive.

I think we also need to take the development process into account.  Once the game goes gold and the discs are being made they are past the point of no return.  Sometimes it takes a couple weeks to print the discs for release, especially for an AAA title like Halo.  If the game was well tested and there are no known bugs to be fixed the developers don't want to just sit on their hands and wait, developing dlc is only natural in that circumstance.

I really hope this isn't just a map pack though.

Some folks think it might be telling Jun and Halsey's story as they escape and if this is the case it is highly unlikely this was already in the tank.  You play as Noble 6, not as anyone else at any point in the game so the escape kind of falls outside of the scope of the current story as you are experiencing the war as Noble 6.  I would love it if they did release that mission though.
