Bungie: There Will Be A Payoff, Please Remain Calm

Is tomorrow the day for information on Bungie's next project? Probably?

METROPOLITAN EMERGENCY!
It's been a bit of a roller-coaster for Bungie-related information lately. E3 was a complete mess, with Bungie running a countdown to an announcement that never happened, supposedly because Microsoft pulled the plug on it.

Lately, though, some of the same style of teasers have been surfacing on the company's site, and now, as seen in this screen-grab of bungie.net, we've got a countdown. A countdown that appears to expire tomorrow morning, to be exact. That'll be around 7AM Giant Bomb time, 10AM in New York. If you live somewhere else, you'll have to do the math for yourself, my mind can't handle anything outside of the US. Also keep in mind that tomorrow is also the one-year anniversary of Halo 3's release.

There's also a reassurance in the teaser, a handy little note that "there will be a payoff" and "please remain calm."

The last teaser message was posted a couple of days ago, and it makes enough of a reference to the Halo universe ("Ready the MAC, and come about" is a fairly clear reference to the Magnetic Accelerator Cannon used by the humans) and enough of a reference to squads to point to this being the squad-based Halo spin-off, the same game that was all the rage in rumor circles right around E3.

It may not be a Halo MMO or anything (or hell, maybe it is!), but I'd be really interested to see Bungie's take on GRAW-style squad-based combat. If this countdown clock is to be believed, maybe we'll all know tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, I guess I should get around to downloading the new Halo 3 update, which patches in a few achievements and other odds and ends.

Looks like I'll be waking up early tomorrow.

What ever

I just hope it adds something worthwhile to the franchise.  Innovates in some way.  Halo 3 was a, wow, that was awesome, NEXT!

we can confirm there will be shields and they will regenerate.

The only reason they might be making another one is because they didnt go out the BANG! they wanted with Halo 3. All they want is money (Who doesn't?) and also a quality game.

wait halo 3 has new achievements? time for me to find my copy somewhere. i stopped playing it after i got the full 1000, two weeks after the game was released.

Pleassse be a Halo MMO...or not. I'm not sure if I want to do that to myself or not...

The top of the Bungie.net website says "There will be a payoff" and the bottom says "It won't be a letter". I wonder if it means they're not just talking about a press release. I call, whatever game they're making is finished and goes on sale tomorrow.

Maybe something to do with the Halo movie?

If it's anything Halo related, I'm sure many will be disappointed. Come on Bungie, you were a developer before Halo, damnit you can be one after!

Nah, it's just referring to the fact that all they had at E3 was a letter saying MS stopped them from announcing something.

So, apparently MS is fine with them announcing the squad based game tomorrow.

I am betting that it will be the Mythic map pack.

How about a Halo game where you and a group of marines go on a rescue mission to find Master Chief after Halo 3?

Posted by Aaox

I like how it says 'Alert Status... Again!'

Bungie is a bit meh, in my opinion.

Not a huge Halo fan, but I'm excited to see what it is.

Or maybe it has nothing at all to do with Halo.  That would be a total shocker.

Posted by gamer4life

there is going to be 750 new points to get, but right now only 250 of them are available... once the new "mythic" map pack comes out then i think all 750 points will be available.  if u look at xbox.com u will see all 73 achievements, or once u download the new update u can look at all of them through your 360

Halo 3 on Windows and Mac, you heard it here first. Ready for the MAC?

Posted by borgmaster

mythic is going on sale today, or they're announcing the new game, either way it'll be awesome.

The marines already went on a rescue mission to find master chief at the beginning of Halo 3. Use your imagination when cooking up stories for halo 4. ...he should crash land on the planet of the apes.

Okay, a teaser of... Halo 3?? What's this... maybe an expansion pack?

Disappointing, dumb, and a waste of time. Shame on Bungie.

that trailer tells me nothing

The Halo 3 portion of the clip implies that this is some sort of Halo 3 add-on or related content. Everything appears to take place from the point of view of a security AI watching as what appears to be drop pods crash down in a huge group. The overall graphical quality seems to imply the use of a previous engine- Halo 3 or prior. All of it seems a bit comical- so people probably shouldn't expect anything too serious out of this.

In the opening scene there is a very large "Traxus" logo in the bottom right  corner of the camera's view. "Traxus" is a reference to an AI in the Marathon series- a forerunner (Not Forerunner) AI to Durandel and Tycho (who are the main AI characters in the series). Traxus went rampant- destroying much of the Martian Net infrastructure- and forcing that network's shutdown in order to stop the AI. (http://traxus.jjaro.net/traxus/Traxus)

If we charge after that thread- you could possibly get the idea that maybe Bungie is making a nod to Portal. A Portal-esque plot oriented- and possibly comedic- expansion to the series- based on the Halo 3 engine. Traxus or an AI of that type could be introduced as a Glados like character- manipulating and influencing what could end up being the expected Halo universe squad based tactics game.

In the process of the drop pods- or whatever they're- hitting the ground- they also destroy much of the city- forcing the citizens or the AI to react with emergency oriented precautions- implying that this drop might have not been expected- or wanted. The AI's reaction appears to be almost WALL-E ish. The graphics of emotion go from emotionless to confused to freaked out and then to sad.

If they AI that seems to be our viewpoint in the trailer has nothing to do with the eventual game- the large number of pods could imply the squad tactics format by themselves. Based on the footage- the squad game we have been expecting might just be a repurposing of Halo 3's advancements in 4-player co-op, Bungie creates a modfiied version of the existing campaign- or a new campaign altogether- but just as an add-on to Halo 3's overall gameplay.

In reference to the award videos that were released earlier this year- what that might have shown us was a PVE level editor- a new take on the concept of Forge- which would expand any Bungie generated campaign material.

Or- in the most straightforward- boring- and literalistic interpretation- this is a teaser for Bungies new "Ultra-Mega-Doom" Banhammer technology- which will force the citizens of Halo to "Keep it Clean"- and thus- making Xbox Live family friendly; allowing for free Xbox Live and huge amounts of ad revenue.

Honestly I think Halo needs a break.

AWESOME!!   Maybe this is a new Wii game where you get to control drop ships!!

Posted by Jawshua

Ok.

This looks like 30% Halo and 70% percent Fallout, cos of the smily faces on the trailer and all the stuff like that.

Posted by BillyBrush1

Wherrre's Maddie?

David Beckham's been asking that same question...

I thought it was quite a good video, unlike their Forge vids they didn't spend the whole time slapping themselves on the back about how great they are at making map packs - ohhh!
