Capcom Confirms Resident Evil 6 Leaked Out

Company alleges "small quantity of stolen copies" weeks ahead of release.

A shot of the early copies of Resident Evil 6 floating around overseas.
A shot of the early copies of Resident Evil 6 floating around overseas.

Resident Evil 6 is scheduled to be released on October 2, but some people already have the game. Wait, what?

Capcom is currently undertaking a thorough investigation into reports that Resident Evil 6 is being sold ahead of its official October 2 release date,” said the company in a statement. “At this time, all we can add is that it would appear this unfortunate incident is limited to a small quantity of stolen copies of the German USK PlayStation 3 version of the game.”

Word on Resident Evil 6 appearing weeks ahead of its release date first showed up on NeoGo, and various photos and videos have appeared to validate the authenticity of the original report.

Capcom’s statement this morning backs that up, though adds the new wrinkle of stolen copies of the game.

As discovered by VideoGamer.com, Capcom senior VP Christian Svensson confirmed the company does not intend to change the release date, despite this incident.

“The NA [North American] date remains 10/2,” said Svensson.

Capcom’s biggest problem? It’s not just that Resident Evil 6 shows up on torrent sites, it's that Resident Evil 6 shows up on torrent sites, people don’t care for the game, and pre-orders disappear. Time will tell on that one.

This is the German version that leaked out though, so wouldn't the violence be censored to hell and back, or is that a thing of the past for German games?

@Hailinel: a lot of the games are still heavily censored, my friend from Germany is getting most of his games from US and UK because of that

It'll be be fine, half of the game will probably be locked behind paid DLC anyway.

What?

Edit: I think I know what you mean now but seeing the same phrase twice in a row is kind of confusing.

@Hailinel: @BambamCZ: Even then, there is difficulty dealing with it all. If you hit up Steam, you'll see that stuff like Dead Island and such have "German" versions, which are essentially censored versions that run through the Steam DRM itself to ensure that the German national policy on censorship applies. It's fucking stupid.

As for RE6, still no interest. I will rarely say this about any developer, but I'm hoping the game fails. Capcom NEEDS to be sent a message that we won't deal with shoveled bullshit after shoveled bullshit with a franchise name slapped on the front. They used to be a company of quality. What the fuck happened?

It seems kind of telling that people aren't enjoying the game, even if they torrent it.

I really didn't enjoy the demo, so I'm fairly nervous about how good this game will be. It's unfortunate, because it really seemed like having some horror elements return (the Leon sections) would be great; but it seems they've just made everything action-y.

I like most other long-time RE fans am lowering my expectations in preparation for mild-to-severe disappointment. The only real problem I have is that we have yet to see a bad numerical RE game, and I'm starting to think this might break that trend.

Hopefully bad sales and reviews will lead to a RE2 remake? Without Mikami though who knows.

PS: I will still buy it day one to play it with my long time RE obsessed friend.

@Jon4649: Even though the unusual turn of phrase kind of makes sense there, my guess is Pat meant to say "It's not just that Resident Evil 6 was leaked early, but ...[torrents] " or something to that effect. Unless Pat did that on purpose.

With the increase in popularity towards general 'survivalist' gameplay lately with stuff like Day Z, I Am Alive, Last of Us ect., it'd be neat to see if CAPCOM once again goes where the money is with a complete reboot, focussing more so on what the series used to be about.

Or at the very least RE6 will completely tank and provide a wake up call to show just how far they've completely boned this franchise. Even the people who liked RE5 are turned off by their latest, that's just how terribly misguided and haphazard RE6 is looking to be. And with the amount of money they've put towards this, and given that this is apparently CAPCOM's biggest project ever, with around 600 people working on it (and for comparison's sake, around 120 worked on RE5), it makes me wonder if they can even recover if RE6 can't match the stupid amount of sales they're aspiring for.

Ah I think Resi6 will be fine, I didn't hate 5 quite enjoyed it a lot and although I still much prefer old-school slow paced survival horror resident evil the series just maintains a sense of absolute stupidity and absurdity that remains compelling regardless of how they decide to design its pacing/mechanics.

What the hell is up with people pronouncing a game hot garbage before they even have their hands on it?

Happened with Hitman: Absolution and it's happening with this. There's no basis for it whatsoever, because you quite simply don't know what you're talking about. Wait for reviews.

Oh, c'mon. Those are two completely different situations. Hitman: Absolution blew up with a load of hate because of some questionable interviews and statements, like ''we want to make the game more linear'', but once gameplay footage started being released everybody was simmering down and currently a lot of people are now very optimistic towards Absolution.

RE6 is the complete opposite. It drawn in everyone with that awesome announcement trailer, and then the playable demo was released... And then aaaaaaall of those gameplay trailers were released. People have played or have at the very least seen a lot of RE6 footage. More than enough to at least spring to some sort of impression on the game. Which looks pretty bad. The gameplay is, simply put, not especially good.

@Yummylee: A demo is still just a demo. Perhaps the story (Hah!) or the combat mechanics make better sense in context, or can be adjusted to a better-feeling configuration.

Six hundred talented people don't put out a COMPLETE piece of shit. It's simply impossible. Even if the game's middling, which is as bad as it probably can be, 'middling' isn't the tone of this baseless vitriol whatsoever.

@mdnthrvst: What ''baseless virtriol'' are you talking about? Are people not allowed to form any kind of impression from what they've seen or even played? That's the entire point of promotional material, to make you excited for the game! Or backfire and push away sales. Which is exactly what RE6 is doing. And I haven't really seen a lot of outright hate for RE6, mostly just apathy really.

They were sold in regular stores - so were they really stolen or were just shipped really early and street date got broken.

As for pirate copies. They are PS3 so the impact is not going to be massive even if they do get out.

@Yummylee: Great counterexample you got there. I stand by what I said - 600 talented professionals don't make garbage. Never have. The Old Republic wasn't great, but it was well-made, which this game will be.

If anything, the actual developers of RE6 are probably despairing over the AWFUL fucking marketing campaign for this game. The people responsible for crafting RE6 are NOT the same people responsible for showing it off, and the latter group is probably filled with misguided, incompetent functionaries.

I've never even played a Resident Evil game in my life, but I see this time and again - PR for games is a sham, and can as often make garbage look great (see Steel Batallion) as it can make something okay look like shit (the likely truth of RE6). And still, gamers flay the bad marketing and conflate it with a bad game.

But let's face it here: Resident Evil stopped being "Survival Horror" after either Nemesis or Code Veronica(You choose).

That demo was a real big bummer. I was already planning on enjoying Resident Evil 6 while grumpy old fucks complained about it (just like how it happened with RE4, just like how it happened with RE5)... And then that demo. I don't give a fuck about 'too much action' or 'not scary enough', I rate games on how fun they are above all. But RE6 just is not fun. You can say RE5 ain't scary, but it's at least fun.

@msavo: I never understood this "i hope it fails" mentality. Why does it matter? Oh great it validates your own personal opinion on the matter, hoo (fuckin) ray, but it's a small personal victory that means absolutely nothing.

Let's say it tanks. Now what? Are they suddenly going to use your ideas on how to make the next RE game?

What are the negative effects of the game tanking? Nevermind how it relates to just you and only you, but I'm guessing that you're assuming it's failure will result in something in the future that you like when in reality (or based on history) that's very unlikely. The result could them going back to the drawing board and doing something you find way worse than RE6.

It's worth the risk in my opinion. I don't need other people to share my view on the matter that's why I , the keyword being " I ", hope it fails so it shows that Capcom needs to take a Resident Evil break or make some drastic changes. Could those changes make the series worse? Of course but at least changes are being made to the formula.

@Yummylee Well that wasn't about you. More the entire culture of Stop Having Fun Guys that permeates this entire medium. Think about Patrick's attitude towards Downpour, holding a bitter grudge that they didn't just make Silent Hill 2 (a game that I'm increasingly unsure of whether or not he's actually played). I'm not a big fan of unreasonable negativity, and that's seemingly the majority of this medium.

@Brodehouse: ...Waaaaaait, didn't I see you post that you also didn't like Downpour too much? It was some list about which Silent Hill and Resident Evil games you think are crappy or something. It stuck with me because, well, I was under the impression that you did, at least initially, like Downpour.

Or I'm remembering wrong. It was from a fairly old thread I think.

Honestly, with the ton of gameplay videos already available, I'm wondering what's left to spoil. I was never a huge fan of the series (my favorite time spent with it was actually watching my brother work through RE1 and 2), but what I have seen so far hasn't gotten me anymore excited to try it. Would be happy to be proven wrong with a good release/surprising reviews, but I have a feeling we all know what we are getting with this one.

I hated RE5, odds are I'll hate this. And I have a good enough idea to know from the demo and my personal tastes that I'll probably hate this. I'd honestly rather play Nemesis, or RE2, or REmake over anything that has been put out from this series in recent years. Plus truth be told I don't like Capcom as a company and they have some incredibly shitty business practices that need to change before I buy another one of their games.

In short, I have some fucks but none of them to give to their "plight". Capcom can go fuck themselves either way.

@Yummylee: Oh, I think Downpour is a pretty middling experience all around, but there's a difference between middling and awful. That game has its problems (monster variety, subpar puzzles, the ending) and its merits (very well performed, some good sidequests, weapon system), but I judge it on its own merits, not how much it conforms to whatever my ideals about Silent Hill are.

People are already talking shit about that Vita one, because (once again) it's not Silent Hill 2 so how dare they? I'll judge it on its merits. People were talking shit about RE6 as soon as they possibly could. I didn't form an opinion until I played that demo. And my problem isn't this isn't RE4! It's that this game isn't any kind of fun.

I still have this weird, fading hope that they saw the reaction and went into some crazy crunch to get it to something approaching fun. I'll probably wind up disappointed.

Like I said 9 minutes ago, I have this weird hope that they rejiggered the entire core gameplay to something fun. But the RESIDENT EVIL 6 DEMO I have isn't very fun.

If a person can't make a quality judgement based on a demo, then what's the point of demos whatsoever? I played an hour of that demo, how long would you feel is enough, the entire game?

Here would be my counter example to the "lots of people can't make something shitty" argument.

So is Re6 really that bad? I loved every single Resident Evil game religiously and cannot fathom the thought I will not get any enjoyment out of a core RE title. I even had some fun with Dead Aim and that game was a horrible stinker. Did not try Operation Racoon City, though.

And what about the rampant hate for RE5? I played it twice in coop with very good friends over teamspeak and it was an extremely excellent cooperative experience and loads of fun.
