Capcom's Remaking Resident Evil Again

The survival horror classic is being tweaked for early 2015.

The original Resident Evil remains one of the greats, and Capcom's 2002 remake (affectionately referred to as REmake) was terrific. Capcom is returning to the well again, and it's one time where I can't blame them.

In early 2015, we'll be treated to yet another update of the franchise's origin story, and it's headed to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. More specifically, Capcom's updated the character models, backgrounds, and even the control scheme. Yep, the tank controls are now optional. Players can also switch between viewing the game in its original 4:3 visual format and a modern 16:9 widescreen look.

For a brief glance at what's coming next year, Capcom released the video below. Now, about Resident Evil 2...

I have never played through RE1. I could buy the wii version and output it at 480p. This would cost under £5.

What would have been interesting is a RE/RE4 mashup. Same mansion, same game, just drop the camera behind the shoulder, add RE4's excellent inventory management and take my money you toupée wearing mother fuckas.

I know it's months later, but I just finished playing RE4 for the first time, and now that I'm interested in this franchise, I went to check out this article, and I've gotta say: you took the exact words out of my mouth regarding this re-remake. It would be a special kind of rad if they made an actual remake of RE1 using an RE4-style engine.

I don't understand how an HD version of a remake is considered another remake of 1. So people should calm down a little with all this resident evil 2 shit.

That game looked fantastic on the GameCube so I'm glad it's getting the HD polish that it deserves. If this game offends you, don't buy it.

@patrickklepek This is how it would have looked had Capcom rerendered everything in native HD from the source files:

But that's not what they did. So here's how it will look:

hmmmm I wish I could say something snarky but this is what I always wanted. Even if it's a flawed port like RE4 HD that cameout earlier this year, I'd still get it because it's a game I'd want to play on a modern console.

I'm so happy!

Enix finally renamed Dragon Warrior to it's original name of Dragon Quest.

Who else thinks it's time for Capcom to do the same with Resident Evil and revert it's global branding to the original name Biohazard?

They should done this shit years ago. The reason why RE4 (still a great game) had more action was because the REmake didn't sell well. Why? It was on GameCube. It had a smaller installbase. They should of ported it to the PS2. It would of sold faster then crack lol

@extomar: ...I think you're maybe getting the puzzles in Resident Evil confused with Silent Hill. Resident Evil's puzzles are rather straightforward really.

Anyway, I think the atmosphere alone will still be able to be appreciated by some it's that thick. Really, I don't see why there's this sect of people that are averse to a HD port of the Resident Evil remake. It's a beloved game and will give plenty of fans such as myself an excuse to play it again. And while it obviously isn't going to sell gangbusters and reignite a new found enthusiasm for Resident Evil, it'll likely inspire more praise and goodwill towards the franchise than Resident Evil 6 or Operation Raccoon City ever did.

@yummylee:

Sorry, I slipped up and I usually try harder to avoid implying any game, especially older games, are "stupid" because all games are made in the context and place they seemed appropriate. In that era, players expected nor did not mind that they have to build a crazy contraption for a key to a lab door just to have skinless dogs to jump through a window. I don't think that will work very well for audiences these days especially with their cynical attitudes.

My memory is a bit fuzzy but I can't remember one scene out of RE that is as tense let alone as stuff we see in modern games. It doesn't mean RE was bad but that modern devs have done a lot to improve atmosphere and presentation where believing "a new generation will appreciate a remake of Resident Evil" seems like a pipe dream already.

I guess if you have not played it then that would be okay, other wise this is really stupid. Capcom seems to be plugging holes in a sinking ship.

@extomar: You said, and I quote, ''I mean the original Biohazard/Resident Evil was stupidly hard to play with crazy adventure game style puzzles''.

Also, again, I think those games hold up pretty well for what they are. They're not for everyone, but whatever. It's no different than how I think a lot of the crazy old games Jeff reveres to look terribly boring and archaic. So long as people go in knowing that this is still a HD re-release of a game from 2002 and set their expectations accordingly, then they should be fine. The puzzles also weren't stupid, they're pretty standard action/adventure stuff.

I didn't say it was hard but I was trying to avoid saying it is was STUPID but you kind of forced me too. :) That original game was laughably stupid from the plot to the dialog and the puzzles. I don't think it stands up very well at all compared to what modern gamers expect out of this genre especially when looking even at the simplistic Slenderman or Outlast let alone Dark Souls.

You can be snide about it all you want, but I'm willing to bet you there's a lot of people out there that have never played the Resident Evil remake and now have the chance to. It's a fantastic game that I'd like to see more people have a stab at.

I'm not sure that is a good thing. I mean the original Biohazard/Resident Evil was stupidly hard to play with crazy adventure game style puzzles. I'm all for revisiting this game but it really needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. I can't imagine what a kid who came from Dark Souls would think of the PSX version.

The original Resident Evil really isn't that hard, especially should you play as Jill. The controls obviously take a little getting used to, but it's far from impenetrable or anything. The remake doubly so, especially now that is has an alternative to the tank controls. Plus it has an easy setting if it really does prove to be too difficult for someone. It doesn't at all need to be rebuilt from the ground up.

None of the other shots looked anything like that shot. I just plain don't believe that the game is going to look like that.

I'm pretty sure the intense lighting in that screenshot is cause by a thunderstorm.

OMG I have been waiting forever for this! Resident Evil 1 is one of my favorite games. I need to buy 2 copies (1 for home and 1 for safe deposit box) of this game! I'm not a huge fan of the gamecube, so this is amazing news. I hope RE0 HD is next. Thanks for the news update Patrick.

Oh man! Way more excited for this than I probably should be! I pretty much bought my GC for this game back in the day so it's great more people will have the opportunity to go back and play this.

Hopefully this sets a precedent for Capcom going back to do stuff with the older games in the franchise. People always talk about wanting to see RE2 get remade but I'd personally prefer RE3 if it was a choice between the two.

Not a remake Patrick. Dear press, please stop calling ports remakes all the time. This is a port with some minor polish applied.

A port is when a game is taken from one platform to another with almost no changes whatsoever beyond resolution. That's not what this is. They're adding control options, screen ratio options (which means rendering more on screen than was previously possible) and updating the graphics which means using higher resolution versions of the background renders and higher poly higher res versions of the character and prop models. So no not a simple port, quite an extensive update actually.

Saying that Capcom are ''remaking'' it again still seems like a bit of a stretch, though. Also, @patrickklepek, you filed this under the wrong Resident Evil page!

Having it exclusive to only Gamecube and Wii stranded it from a much larger audience; it's the reason why its Gamecube version in particular sold so poorly, least from Mikami's perspective. Also, this is Capcom. It's basically their MO to be constantly releasing their games on every system. You think this is bad? Consider how many times RE4 has been ported over the years.

Finally, I doubt this is going to look exactly like the Wii version. It's hard to tell just how much better it'll look overall from the previous SD versions, and I'd rather wait to see it in action for myself -- it will at the very least have better detailed character models. Plus, the addition of a new modern analogue control scheme is kind of a big deal and may help a lot of people be able to more comfortably play the game. I myself have no problem with tank controls, though I still think it's an appreciative gesture to give players a little more choice.

Good point. Part of the scare factor was due to tank controls though. I hope most people use them.

@ikabubu: If they were going to reboot the franchise, they wouldn't be re-mastering the gamecube remake of the original. They would just start from the ground up.

I remember this game being harder than the original because the zombies would become feral after a while if you didn't decapitate or burn them so I never beat it because of that. I do hope this does well and they do a remastering of RE0 because that game was pretty good too.

But nothing has changed has it? I mean look at the port of the GameCube version onto the Wii, that and this version look almost identical. Whats the point? We are now being asked to buy the same product for a 3rd time.

I get that this is cheaper than making a new game...but why spend money on this at all? Why not just pool all funds into actually making a new good game? Maybe I'm on the outside with this, you and other can obviously see some merit in this and I can respect that opinion but re releasing a remake of a game for a 3rd time doesn't imbue confidence in the brand for me, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Cool. The GameCube remake of RE was the best remake of a game there's ever been.

Exactly why this one doesnt need to exist. Why couldn't they have either (a) given us a new game, or (b) given the gamecube treatment to RE2 or Nemesis. I love RE but it hit peak greatness on GameCube.

Because re-releasing remake on new consoles with some added bells and whistles is much easier and quicker than developing a whole new game, or attempting to HD-ify a PS1 game.

They probably are in fact currently developing a new RE game anyway. This remake port (along with the RE4 port earlier this year) like I mentioned before is likely so they can attempt to remind people of the golden age of Resident Evil after the shitshow that was 2012. A way to try and re-imbue a little more confidence in the brand after RE6 in particular destroyed it.

Can't say I blame them. They never made a resident evil game better than the first. It just worked better in terms of tension and atmosphere. Being stuck in a mansion, can't go outside, lost your buddy and finding mysterious clues about the strange former occupants of the mansion.

"Wow, what a mansion!"
