Capcom's Remaking Resident Evil Again

The survival horror classic is being tweaked for early 2015.

The original Resident Evil remains one of the greats, and Capcom's 2002 remake (affectionately referred to as REmake) was terrific. Capcom is returning to the well again, and it's one time where I can't blame them.

In early 2015, we'll be treated to yet another update of the franchise's origin story, and it's headed to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. More specifically, Capcom's updated the character models, backgrounds, and even the control scheme. Yep, the tank controls are now optional. Players can also switch between viewing the game in its original 4:3 visual format and a modern 16:9 widescreen look.

For a brief glance at what's coming next year, Capcom released the video below. Now, about Resident Evil 2...

I have never played through RE1. I could buy the wii version and output it at 480p. This would cost under £5.

What would have been interesting is a RE/RE4 mashup. Same mansion, same game, just drop the camera behind the shoulder, add RE4's excellent inventory management and take my money you toupée wearing mother fuckas.

Cool. The GameCube remake of RE was the best remake of a game there's ever been.

Exactly why this one doesnt need to exist. Why couldn't they have either (a) given us a new game, or (b) given the gamecube treatment to RE2 or Nemesis. I love RE but it hit peak greatness on GameCube.

I loved the REmake so I'm down for this. I agree that this is just a test run for an upcoming Resident Evil 2 (and hopefully 3) remake. I mean, that's the goal, right? How could they not be doing that?

This isn't another remake, this is an up-res of the Gamecube version. Besides, I would blame them for returning to that particular well. If they're going to remake an old game, why not do a proper update of Resident Evil 2 or 3? I'd love to see those with some modern high-res graphics.

Ah Capcom when will you stop spoiling your franchises with over-saturation. Remake 2, what we wanted was a remake of 2! I own the Gamcube version of this and its still fine.

I'd much rather see them do a remaster for Resident Evil 2. Besides RE4, RE2 is the best in the series.

I think this is neat news, but to me this just screams that someone inside Capcom really wanted to do an old-school Resident Evil, was told "No, dude, we're not putting the money in a project like that. Go touch up REmake instead and just release that." What other games are Capcom even working on at this point? I literally can't think of anything they're doing for the new consoles except Deep Down for the Ps4, and there's basically no news of when that's coming out over here, if at all. They're a huge developer/publisher currently doing damn-near nothing.

@yummylee: I kind of wish there was an easier way to play that DS enhanced version, since it was just a cleaner looking port of the PS1 game with the improved RE3 controls. The 2002 is pretty much entirely it's own game to me.

The original RE is the only kind of tacky I will accept in this household.

However the GC remake was delicious and I really want to play it again someday.

Played through it multiple times already, seen it running at a high resolution in dolphin, with nice anti-aliasing and many other bells and whistles. Can't say I'm particularly excited. But yeah, if this is just testing the waters for a RE2 remake, I'm all for that.

@gunder: Mostly because it was tuned to specifically fuck with people who know the PS1 game inside out. Still, I'm annoyed that capcom pissed all over it originally and chewed mikami out for it not selling as much as their (typically) overinflated projections, and then they decide to steadily milk that version by continually re-releasing it because it's a steady earner.

Also I object to the article title implying that they're doing a fresh remake instead of just updating the existing remake.

@giantlizardking: I never said it wasn't a dumb name. I originally pointed out the fact that the "Resident" part of the game's title can still make sense. Also when did I comment on the game's quality, ie it being bad?

It just seems like you're saying a bunch of random things to deflect attention away from how dumb your original statement was.

Forgive me. I assumed the only reason you wouldn't see the obvious truth of "Resident Evil" being a house pun was because you thought I was insulting it. It turns out you're just bad at puns? I don't know. Anyway, Chris Kramer, Senior Director of Communications and Community at Capcom US, said the exact same thing I'm claiming so I don't see why my original statement is dumb.

If this helps fund my Resident Evil dream game starring Ada, Claire, and Sheva then I'm down. Probably won't buy it, but I'm down. I think I would much prefer a Tomb Raider-style "drop everything and start over" reboot, but meh.

so bored with the story of Resident Evil, how many game are we into it and it never has an ending. I would like them to end it and then if there going to give more games explore another story for gamers to get into. At this point there too many games in for younger gamers to ever care. Capcom is just beat'in a dead horse.... Actually the creators beating a dead horse would be scarier then making more games.

This would be easier to swallow if there were one or two more games of the series remastered along with the 1st (like a RE0, RE1, & RE2 remastered bundle).

I'm not sure how resource intensive or expensive it is to remaster *old* games like this, but it certainly doesn't interest me to play a 2nd remake.

Yeah, I always thought "Resident Evil" had a deeper, darker meaning -- like, "The evil that can lie just beneath humanity's facade". Of course, the video game series is nowhere near as profound as that. ;)

"Biohazard" is silly. When I think "Biohazard", I think "soiled medical scrubs" or "tiny house crammed with thirty cats".

I really, really liked the REmake of the first game on the gamecube.. but I bet that version is still pretty damn good. Almost certainly won't be getting this new one. Might be an overall good thing if it leads Capcom to focus on games similar to the first one though.

@fawkes What you said is true. The title was a result of Capcom's US Marketing department at the time. Much in the same way that Capcom's Marketing Dept came up with the term "Survival/Horror" a genre that didn't exist. RE wasn't the first game of it's type however someone was very clever to come up with that term which eventually stuck and became a genre. Capcom thought they could make lightning strike twice when they tried to do the same with Devil May Cry years later calling it "Stylish Action Combat" (or something like that) but it never stuck.

They tried the same thing with RE6 as well, by coining it as ''Dramatic Horror''...

@hammondoftexas: They did multiple takes. One for Western audiences, one for the Japanese audience where they say Biohazard. They know that not everybody in the US knows the game by it's US title. It also makes it seem more respectful for the Western audience to hear them say "Resident Evil" which was part of the reason they did it.

In other words they shot a single video for two audiences with some minor editing. Note the hard cut early on after they introduce themselves and stop saying Resident Evil.

@giantlizardking Any area that someone or something is living can be a residence, thus the name will always make sense. It doesn't have to be a traditional living environment like a house.

The original name was clearly a play on words, as the game took place in a mansion. As early as the second game in the series, which tool place in a police station, it stopped being about evil in a residence and thus the title stopped making sense.

No, it wasn't. You're just assuming that and stating it as if it were a fact when in fact it's complete BS.

The name "Resident Evil" was chosen because it could be applied to almost anything. It is not a literal reference to anything. I learned this back in 2008 at the first (named) Captivate event that Capcom held in Las Vegas.

"Resident Evil" was decided upon as a name because of series potential knowing that the phrase/term/title could be all inclusive for nearly anything.

Oh sure, that totally doesn't sound like Capcom just trying to retcon their dumb name into making sense.

From the wiki

The series was originally called Biohazard in Japan but it was decided to change the name in the western market after Chris Kramer, the Director of Communications at Capcom, pointed out that it would be impossible to trademark "Biohazard" in the US. There was a DOS game and a Metal band bearing the same name, among other things. Capcom then held an internal contest within its company to find an alternative name and eventually settled on "Resident Evil." It was a clever pun since the original game took place in a mansion filled with evil monsters.

Kramer voted against the name, saying the title was "super-cheesy" but the rest of the marketing crew loved it and were ultimately able to convince Capcom Japan and Shinji Mikami that the name fit, even though in later years Mikami admitted that the American name was "stupid".

Just give it up, it's a dumb name. Lots of games have dumb names, that doesn't mean they are bad.

EDIT: wrong quote :/

I might be interested in it. The tank controls always turned me off from it and other sequels so making it optional could be enough to get me to try it so long as the normal controls work well. I'll wait for the QL to decide much more.

I am totally willing to buy a slightly updated version of a game that came out in 2002 that in turn is a remake of one that came out in 1996. I might have a problem.

Don't forget the 2006 'remaster' of the very original Resident Evil on DS, which is the version I remember you saying was the one you first played. Man, this game's certainly gotten around...

Although the remake is of course so different from the original that I consider it to be its own game.

Yup. Mikami himself has openly spoken about how he thinks the name Resident Evil is ''stupid''. I don't mind it myself, as nonsensical as it may be. It's certainly more colourful than Biohazard.

You know, I never have played any of the early RE games. I might give this a shot, especially without tank controls. Hopefully this'll keep Capcom skirting the abyss a little longer, and maybe they can put out something cool later this generation. They were one of my favorite devs going into the last gen.
