Come Join the Giant Bomb Design Team

Dave's going on vacation for a bit, so Alexis is gonna need some help.

Think you could have designed and coded the CSS for the new giantbomb.com? Then I might have a job for you.

Jeff said I had to put a picture of myself here so I am just gonna use this one created by buzz_clik

I'm looking for a Senior Technical Designer with strong creative skills and proven experience building websites using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The candidate will be joining a small front-end design team that creates, designs, and then actively codes those designs into working pages. You'll be working on all the CBSi Games sites including Giant Bomb, Comic Vine, GameFAQs, and GameSpot.

The responsive nature of Giant Bomb uses some advanced CSS methods including media query breakpoints, multiple mobile device support, HTML5 video skinning, font icons, sass functions/variables, :before:after content, and retina support. A good understanding of these techniques are of paramount importance.

And although I can't require you to win a Mortal Kombat Scrub League or play Halo for 24 hours to raise money for the kids, a love of gaming would be nice.

Must Haves

  • Great Photoshop Skills
  • Advanced HTML and CSS coding skills with a strong emphasis towards responsive and multiple device development.
  • Portfolio with live examples. Dribbble.com and github.com accounts are a plus.
  • Experience working in a templating system like Django, Jinga, Smarty, Twig, Mustache, etc.

Nice to have

  • Experience with css precompilers such as Sass/Compass or LESS.
  • Javascript skills for use in prototyping.
  • Familiarity with Git or other source code version control system.

If you're interested, apply at the CBS jobs site here.

This position has been filled. More details coming soon. Thanks for all the interest. <>

This guy can't even lay out an article. Put that thing up top. Sheesh.

Posted by imbarkus

Aww. You want someone good.

Posted by imbarkus

@snide: Hey man you robbed me of First Post achievement... oh... wait...

Posted by Hardtarget

ok how about instead of a designer you hire a regular ol IT/win server guy from Vancouver who has no green card but could really add to your team dynamic?!

eh??

ehhh????????

But what sort of GeoCities experience would a person need for such a job? Also, I have some sweet under construction gifs for when you guys are working on the site (or just all the time).

Edited by Aegon

This is pretty cool. I'm looking to be a web developer rather than a designer, but obviously I have to know HTML and CSS as well. Seeing stuff like this here is pretty exciting.

Posted by Morbid_Coffee

I'll do it just give me the next three and a half years to get ready.

Sorry, Tripod alumni only.

If you want to work for Giant Bomb, you better be damn good.

I won't lie. I wish my web design skill set was even remotely as advanced as anything Giant Bomb does, because in comparison for the work I currently do with the web, it's not even remotely close.

Although I mostly sit on the marketing side of things, so pretty much nobody wants to hear me drone on about web usability and metrics-driven this, or metrics-driven that.

Dave is going on a vacation, one of those Soprano's vacations.

It was nice knowing you Dave.

Aw, but if you meet all the listed requirements, why not just try (if you really do want to work for GB)?

Well people say having kids is the beginning of the end, so this isn't actually that far off.

I built an angel fire website once so that basically makes me an expert on web design right?

Posted by Zevvion

I don't even know what most of the requirements mean... damn. I'm doing nothing productive with my life.

I said this on the last job posting but I am extremely disappointed that the Giant Bomb staff do not have a resident archaeologist. Don't worry, I'll take the job. Every video game website needs an archaeologist. I think it's law or something.

@ben_h: Who is the they in this statement? The end of what? This is some morbid stuff here. Having a kid changes everything. They don't shoot you in the delivery room.

Posted by wolf_blitzer85

Well... I can make really fucking good sandwiches.

First task: perform a full analysis of the burial site for all those E.T. 2600 carts.

Here is an example of my Great Photoshop Skills. I'll expect the first paycheck on Monday.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kind Regards,

@patman99: Can't you do some faux discovery of an ancient Greek game console? :P

I would totally join... if I could code.

Haha, because picking up my entire life in Canada and moving it all the way to San Fran for a short-term contract position when I already have a steady full-time job is probably the worst idea ever, even if it probably would be a lot of fun over there in the process.

Aww, you're leaving us @snide?

I designed the pinball hall of frame, is that good enough?

Posted by paulwade1984

Wow. that's a hell of a list of experience for somebody.

I've just left uni after completing my computing degree and I don't fit that criteria at all. Guess I need a low level job before applying for the big boys eh.

From the CBS job site, under "nice to have":

SSS Ranking in Devil May Cry, Level 70 in Skyrim, Mythic/LASO difficulty achievement in any Halo and/or Mile High Club achievement in Call of Duty 4

I always knew you guys were biased towards Microsoft!

Edited by Beaudacious

<script type="text/javascript">

OH god JavaScript, it always baffles me how people put up with such a monstrosity as JavaScript. All the convoluted nature you could desired from a scripting language none of the proper functionality a real language can offer.

<p style="color:lightblue">My best wishes go out to Web Developers, I can't understand how you guys find the tools given to you to be effective in any way.<p>

@heatdrive88: Ah, I totally get that. I'm in Canada as well and doubt that I'd be willing to move to San Fran, even if it's to work for Giant Bomb.

Dang, I don't have nearly enough web skills... I'm an Industrial Designer and I've only done a fair amount of front-end web and app design (though no more than turning my photoshop files into basic HTML & CSS). I've not made the jump to learning Javascript or fully responsive sites. Ha I love making physical things too much. Alas, my dreams of helping build the Bombastica with my skills may never happen! (...that is, unless you need a guy to design swag for the community? Maybe someday!)

Edited by Chaser324

Oh man! If I had just a little bit more experience and a slightly better portfolio, I would totally apply for this job. I've done some freelance work as a web developer and bent Twitter Bootstrap to my will several times, but I certainly haven't done anything on the scale of GB.

I feel you man, although they generally ask for a higher caliber than is needed. I'm a full time student, so I wouldn't even remotely be able to do it. I say go for it man. Worst you can get is a no.

Well, they're asking if you think you could design something like giant bomb, not if you have. So it might be worth it to apply with whatever you've got in your portfolio now.

@monk: I got SASS and Compass to work through Cygwin, though you do have to apply a patch yourself for it to work correctly.

I like video games. I don't know how to use Photoshop. Guess I'll drop in for a TNT!

Just sent mine. I would literally leave everything I have here in Brazil in a second's notice if I were chosen. What a fucking dream job that would be.

Edited by Mento

Is MS Paint an acceptable substitute for Photoshop? I have quite the portfolio of stickpeople work here on Giant Bomb. As for the coding languages, I could probably take a cursory glance and make a few confused noises before breaking down and sobbing uncontrollably. I know, it's a wonder I haven't been snatched up already.

I'm just waiting for the day when they announce they're looking for a manga reviewer for Comic Vine. You should see the growing sales of manga series. ONE PIECE alone sold over 27 million units last year, and released only four volumes that year.

Edited by MrBubbles

Um I took a computer science class last semester where we briefly coded with HTML in notepad++ does that count?
