Confirmed: Nintendo's 2010-2011 Lineup to be Totally Badass

That 2008-2009 window, though, is maybe a little less certain.

Eurogamer's Tom Bramwell has the story on October's issue of Edge Magazine, which has a statement from Nintendo about its dedication to the "core gamers"

The quotes go a bit like this:

"We have never neglected our core gamers. We still have developers working on popular core gaming franchises but we need longer to complete these games, approximately two to three years."

aaaaaand there's this one:

"These games are not ready to launch in early 2009 but are being worked on by all development teams."

Be sure to check out Eurogamer's story for a bit more context... you might also want to track down the October issue of Edge, while you're at it, to trace this all the way back to its source. But for now, let's just assume this hasn't been telephoned into something bigger than it really is and think about this for a bit.

The concept of Nintendo focusing on the mainstream audience isn't exactly new, right? In case you already blocked it out of your memory, 99 percent of the company's E3 press conference was focused on games designed for that crowd. Maybe this says more about my memory than anything else, but what else did the company even show? Here's my recollection of the press conference.

I'm convinced that there must have been more games actually announced during that thing. Anyway, you all probably remember the feelings of disappointment as very few games specifically for people who play games already were shown.

Now, if you read these new quotes a specific way, you could take them to mean that Nintendo's going to keep riding the family train until at least 2010 and leave you wondering why you waited out in front of a store to buy a Wii the second they were released. Or you could take them to mean what it says: that the games from the "popular core franchises" that Nintendo is known for are going to take awhile.

To me, this all comes down to what games Nintendo uses to fill in the next 24-36 months of blanks. This could (if I may express a little hope here) mean that the company is working on a bunch of new stuff that could appeal to people like you and me. That, to me, would be the best possible outcome. After all, this generation has already seen its Mario, Metroid, and Zelda. Nintendo isn't exactly known for pumping out key games in those franchises on an annual basis. So obviously, it's going to be awhile before we see anything along those lines.

Or maybe I'm just hoping too much and we're in for a few years of family friendly excitement that may or may not appeal to those of us who can handle a standard controller.

This, as you might have guessed, has become our question of the day. What do you think about all this? Are you tearing your hair out and selling your Wii, stat? Or are you going to sit back and see how all this pans out? What are you hoping to see on the Wii over the next couple of years?

I really like my Wii, but I have not been playing it at all for the past few months, except for the occasional Brawl and Mario Kart. I am just really disappointed with Nintendo (who is still my favorite game company) and their current line-up. I like some of these casual games to an extent, but if they forget about us I am going to be one pissed off dude.

It's funny, I was one of the lucky ones to nab a PS3 and a Wii on launch day thanks to some slick "I got in line before you" pre-orders. I bought a second set of controllers for it (nunchuck and Wii-mote) and Zelda, played it, then packed up the Wii and it's been in my closet since December same year. While there are maybe 2 or so games I would love to get my hands on for the Wii, it's just not enough to un-box it and set it back up. I won't sell the system, but i'll be damned if I actually use it for probably a long time. Sad. Still have the second set of controllers fully packaged too, mint condition! I guess if those damn things are ever worth any money, I'm ahead of the game now!

In my case i have kids which the wii is perfect for.  I can wait for the few titles that come out for real gamers, but i also have a xbox and ps3 to keep me busy.  But I would sell my wii and by a xbox if that was all i had though.  Nintendo you were my first love and you have let me down.

The wii joins my gamecube and n64 on my shelf collecting dust. I appreciate the few gems that hit the systems and I am not a fan of selling systems. I have to admit as a core gamer and a once nintendo fan (during the nes and snes era) I just find it sad to see Nintendo neglecting their once core audience. I know Microsoft isn't going to neglect their core market, but I see the fall update as a bad move into the casual market. I understand the appeal of casual gaming, but a system dedicated to it? Thats a bit excessive in my opinion.

I'm a die hard Nintendo fan. I love me some Mario and some Metroid and some Star Fox (which still hasn't made an appearance on the Wii). I'll keep the Wii for now. I don't really have the money to buy a lot of games anyway, so I'll keep it and play The Force Unleashed and Conduit and maybe buy an XBox next time around if the Big N doesn't get it's act together.

Unfortunately for me, my life doesn't lend itself to playing anything but the family games.  I don't have time to bust out a new Mario or Zelda, much as it pains me to say.  So at least I get some gaming goodness having a Wii.  If I had a 360 or 3, they would be collecting dust right now :(

Or maybe they say you can expect such games in late 2009. Since, that's what they state when they say they aren't ready for early 2009. So, where does the 2010 and 2011 bit come from?

Who really expected a new Zelda caliber game before then anyway? Do you want a Twilight Princess expansion or the redefinition of the series we've been promised? We already got some of their big franschises in the beginning of the Wii's life, it's only natural sequels take some time. How many Zeldas did you see on the N64? 1.5. But people didn't talk about abdnonment then.

In the mean time, there are many third party core games to look forward to and more and more get announced all the time, the latest of which being Arc Rise Fantasia, Kizuno, House of the Dead and Cursed Mountain, all looking great from the media shown so far. Of course, reading sites who only cover the Wii just to "cover everything" instead of having people who would actually play it themselves, you wouldn't know much about any of these.

People wanting a good core game every 3 months from Nintendo alone are being ridiculous. I don't see Blizzard providing that for all the mighty dollars they're also making.

As for games that are closer than Nintendo's for release, there's, De Blob, PES 09, Tales of Symphonia 2, Mad World, The Conduit, COD5, Force Unleashed, House of the Dead: Overkill, Fragile, Sky Crawlers, Castlevania: Judgement, Little King Story, Deadly Creatures, Warior Land, Tenchu IV, Animales de la Muerte, Space Invaders Get Even, Megaman 9 and many many more, most of them exclusives or at least with very unique Wii versions.

Please Giant Bomb, don't take the Kotaku trend of making every Nintendo topic a flame bait... I know you think it works, but is that the kind of website you wish to have?

Nintendo's Press conference should have been called "WiiFinished" because as far as people who like to play games are concerned, that's exactly what they are. Without any decent titles to compete in any traditional genre, Nintendo has come off as weak with absolutely nothing of the horizon that's even comparable to the Xbox or PS3.
I realize with the Wii that the House of Mario has been excellent as far as keeping their franchises up to date but a lack of a real compelling software titles for 2008 / 2009 is really going to hurt them. We thought WiiFit was an interesting social experiment and viable product last year, but WiiMusic is utter crap...with Guitar Hero and Rock Band on the same system even, it comes off as even more lame...WiiMusic should have been an unlockable bonus in another game.

Lorde, there's only a lack of Nintendo core titles, third parties are filling in more than adequately, with exclusives no less. People who actually do bother with the system rather than bash it every chance they get can tell you that much. As for the music games, well, you haven't played it so how are you so sure it's lame? Because of one brief presentation that didn't even show how it really works? I'm not interested in music games myself and I can tell you people with toy guitars acting all "rock star" esque look as ridiculous as the guy air drumming @ Nintendo's E3 conference to me. Sure the game may have a learning curve and even near-impossible difficulty modes but that doesn't make it any more serious or less casul, it's clear what market all these games are going after and it's the same market people like condemning Nintendo for. Still, acting like all the promising games expected in 2008 and 2009 are nonexistent is pretty lame, I guess hating Nintendo is the "in" thing these days, much like grey and brown is the "next gen" thing these days and the separation of "hardcore" and "casual" is even more "in" or whatever... Well, I shouldn't expect more from the Sony generation, casuals of the yesteryear thinking they're the hardcores of today... Saturn FTW really.

What's this new smiles game? sounds exciting!
But yeah... Because i could only afford 1 console and i had faith in sony and the gamecube ( at the beginning of the generation) I always felt a pang of regret when i saw the PS2 and Xbox were getting  GOW, Halo, DMC, Final Fantasys... what a joke that was. I see i would have felt the same if i owned a Wii: Halo 3, GOW3, RE5, LittleBigPlanet, DMC4, GOW3, GeOW1 and 2... Don't the Wii only fans see those games and think " damn...I really, REALLY want to play those games..." ?

I have a both a Wii, and a DS. There's alot of good games coming out all of the time for both of these. There will be more money to be made by third parties now, and the market can only mathematically grow, and will do so in high numbers too. Just buy a 360/PS3 and problem's solved! I'll wait an extra year, just for the games to have that new Wii Motion tech included with them. Everything else will feel old after that.

Also, when Nintendo has had their sweet time figuring out how to proceed in the online space, they will make it big there. But that's later.

I hope they make a Super Mario Galaxy II. That shouldn't take long, and I would love it.

The only reason I own a wii is becasue my 7yr old son and my wife are amused by it.  It seems like quite a fade to me.  Shaking the remote to hit the baseball and bowl was amusing the first week I had a wii but that got boring quick. Most of the other games I have are pure garbage with broken motion controlls (gameparty, winter sports to name a few).  Face it, Wii is for the mainstream. If you are a hardcore gamer ( or even something more then slightly causal) get a 360, PS3, and/or PC

I haven't turned my Wii on in months. For me it's okay because I have a Ps3 and a DS that keep me busy, so I can patiently wait.

But if the next two years prove to be like this semester, then I'm afraid my Wii will rust before it is turned on again...

But I have to disagree on one thing. The big titles we've seen on the Wii, I don't think that Zelda really counts, because it was really a Gamecube game. So maybe we will see another Zelda sooner than we expect. Though if it's anything like Twilight Princess we really don't have reasons to be happy.

I hate my wii, the only i've enjoyed on it so far is zelda, no more heros, and ssbb. When i'm not playing it i put it in the corner and tell it when it wants to play with me again it can come out and do that, or it can keep shelling out cheap motion sensing rip offs and things that can't truly be clasified as a game. I'll be playing braid and mercs 2 if it needs me.

In 3 years the wii will be even more outdated than it is now.  The wiimote as it is now is only good for fps games period...everything else is unresponsive or waggle. As for the motion plus, good for them but considering the devs just got it that means another 3 year wait for those really good games.  On top of that third parties don't take the console seriously releasing mainly shovelware and even nintendo is pushing out cheaply made games Mario Party 8, Mario Kart Wii, super mario sluggers, donkey kong barrel blast.  Wtf, even most of their games arent good anymore.  I've wanted to believe in nintendo but lets face it.  Their controller sucks right now, the wii's technology is last gen, there aren't any good games to look foward to, and their online is terrible.  I really think I'm ready to sell my wii.  For everything the wii lacks the 360 makes up for.  Except for sales...which the wii doesn't deserve considering what I just mentioned.  Wii owners sell your console and buy a real one.  You will not be dissapointed.   The 360 holiday lineup isn't just fps games either...We have Fable 2, Banjo, Prince, mirror's edge, they all have 2 things in common they will all be great games and non of them are coming to wii.  Nintendo isn't hardcore anymore, you should've realized that before the press confrence anyway.  I realized it after thinking there was something wrong with the wiimote when play tp, link didn't swing his sword when I swung my arm, he did it half a second later....great hardware.   Maybe that's why third parties don't take you seriously.

After the e3 press conferance I sold my Wii. I was kind of sad to do it at first but I kept looking at the games out and thought I have played every game I want to for this thing and there is nothing on the horizion that I am remotely interested in. I bought a used PS3 and have been loving it. I can't enought of motorstorm. So after 23 years of being a Nintendo fan boy I finally put down my controler err wiimote. Maybe in 2 or 3 years they can get me back but by then I will probably be loving on Little Big Planet too much to remeber who this Mario guy is anyway.

They basically state you can expect such games in late 2009. Since, that's what they state when they say they aren't ready for early 2009. So, where does the 2010 and 2011 bit people have been sprouting out come from? They say games take 2-3 years total development time, not that they will take 3 more starting today, learn to read. Either way, this isn't bad considering all the core games Nintendo have already delivered already, early in the Wii's life. But people like forgetting even the past year because it's "in the past" and say Nintendo abandon core gamers even though they've provided great service to them.

Who really expected a new Zelda or Galaxy caliber game before then anyway? Do you want a Twilight Princess expansion or the redefinition of the series we've been promised? That will take a long time with Nintendo's dedication to quality and I'm sure people wouldn't have it any other way. They're the Blizzard of consoles in regards to that. Now they have an outlet to provide smaller casual games inbetween their big titles it's a bad thing?! How many Zeldas did you see on the N64? 1.5. But people didn't talk about abandonment then.

Sad, but whatever, google them.

As for games that are closer than Nintendo's for release, there's titles like De Blob, PES 09, Tales of Symphonia 2, Mad World, The Conduit, COD5, Force Unleashed, House of the Dead: Overkill, Fragile, Sky Crawlers, Castlevania Judgement, Little King Story, Deadly Creatures, Wario Land, Tenchu IV, Animales de la Muerte, Space Invaders Get Even, Megaman 9 and many many many more, most of them exclusives or at least with very unique Wii versions.

But hey, I guess people who say their Wii is gathering dust just don't clean their homes much, and they don't buy any games which makes me wonder why they own consoles.

As for the people who don't want more Zelda, Mario, Metroid, F-Zero, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, etc, well, If you don't want Nintendo's franschises why would you buy a Wii? There are also third party games, but when people complain that Nintendo forsakes the core gamer, surely they mean they want Nintendo to keep making their games. They can't "forsake" doing something they never did do after all.

Now they confirm such games are coming, people complain it's not new games but it's Nintendo games? What the heck, hah. People will always bitch I guess, just sell your Wii (if you even own one) and ignore all the related articles, you should have never bought it in the first place guys.

Me, I love it and will keep doing so as long as great games keep coming either from Nintendo or third parties, so, for a long time yet.

Nintendo should just shut up, real gamers still buy their games and have been pleased with their core offerings so far and are looking forward to their future offerings which aren't that far away (again, late 2009 is a year away, I certainly can wait far longer with the third party games I want inbetween) while everyone else will bitch and whine no matter what's announced, shown or released.

PS: I love all these touching "convert" stories, how you grew up with Nintendo but now switched because new Nintendo suck, keep them coming, they're like those Mac ads of yesteryear by apple, hilarious, even though you know they're all staged and don't provide actual compelling reasons to go Mac (PS3,360 in this case).

Hmm... not sure how i fit in with the group posting on this story.  Anywho, i have to agree with the fact that there really isn't anything recent or new that i want to play on my Wii.  I did try Okami on it recently, but the controls were horrible, so i gave up on it.  There are a few titles coming out this year that i plan on trying, Mad World and AC, and that more than enough reason for me to keep my Wii.  That and the fact that i still play SMG and Wii sports now and then.   Like i said before, i don't think i fit in with most people who are commenting since i don't 'game' that much.  Branthog claims to have 92 games for the 360, that crazy, i can't even name 92 games for that system (or any system).  Right now i have 7 Wii games, 3 PS3 games, and 9 DS games, and i think that a bit much.

All in all right now, i like my Wii a lot, but i play my PS3 more (and my DS owns them both).

*btw* shame on anyone who sells their consoles to a store, i can understand selling to your friends, but not a store or ebay.

It bothers me that Nintendo always says, "We haven't forgotten you, Mario and Zelda are coming." That is a good thing, I like me some Mario and I like me some Zelda...but Nintendo cannot satisfy me with those alone; I want new and innovative titles. There can be innovative games taking advatage of the Wii remote in unique ways that aren't "Wii-something-or-other." The wii remote can be used  to appeal to the hardcore, as well. I want Miyamoto to put some of his brain-power to more unique games, like Pikmin. Pikmin was a unique and interesting experience, but it was still a game for the hardcore.

WTFU, Nintendo?
