Console Battlefield 3 to Include Optional High-Res Textures

I hope that picture is without high res textures. Looks like the Beta, bad. Also sad that the console version will only have 3 flags. I hate 3 flag maps. They need 4 flags, 3 make for boring rounds, they are easy to defend.

I'm personally holding out to buy it on Games on Demand for 360, but i have my doubts about whether the HD textures will make it into that release.

In conquest? Didn't they have 4 or 5 in Bad Company 2? God, this is turning into a game that I'm not really that excited for, I was hoping for something just a little bit different than Call of Duty, but in many ways, they seem too similar to me.

just look at the picture. Operation Firestorm and Metro will have 3 flags (There's footage of Metro Conquest on Youtube) Some maps in BC2 had 4, I hope some will have again. I don't think any had 5. Pretty much all linear CQ maps seem to have 3 flags, just like BC2.

I think DICE already stated that the textures in the open beta on consoles are lower res than what the game will have at release. They were probably referring to this.

So without the High-res pack the game (probably) looks like beta (minus some of the glitches) and with the High-res pack it looks better but probably takes slightly longer to load the levels. It shouldn't have an impact on performance once a level is loaded unless the High-res pack also activated some extra image processes. Which it probably doesn't...

The sad thing is that there aren't many devs actually making PC games these days. Even games like RAGE and Battlefield 3 feel a little weighed down by their console brothers.

Battlefield 3 . . . biggest disappointment for 2011.

I can only assume this texture pack probably hammers the framerate when things get busy on-screen, which is the reason for making it optional.

This makes me worry a bit about the console versions, because it implies that perhaps they were having trouble optimizing the engine to run well on consoles. Straight up releasing hi-res textures as an optional add-on is a pretty drastic move, because if there weren't problems, clearly they would already be in there.

Still looking forward to the game, though. Don't get the negative buzz - aside from some bugs, and the weird internet server browser, I think the beta is a ton of fun, and looks phenomenal. Can't wait to see the full game.

The picture is a leaked picture from the alpha version of the Operation Firestorm map as far as I can tell.

I have maybe 4 out of 120 GB free, but I'll be making room for this option. It's kind of a hackaround, but I wish more 360 games would do this.

I don't doubt that it looks great, and would certainly be hard to get running on current consoles. I'm talking about the fact that PC gaming is consistently celebrated for it's potential, rather than the actual reality. If somebody was trying to prove a point about how console games have the best graphics, and only gave about 4/5 examples of games with amazing graphics, you'd laugh them off - but for PC gamers, apparently a handful of games is all you need. And I KNOW that most console ports look better on PC with a little extra AA etc, but personally I'd rather play a console game on a console.

It's crazy how differently some people are interpreting this article from me. To me it obviously means that only consoles with hard drives will be able to get hold of the pack right? And I don't think it will slow the game down at all, EA/Dice aren't stupid, they wouldn't cut performance of their game on purpose, the texture pack will probably just be a sizeable download that either won't fit on alot of hard drives or will alienate the people whose consoles don't have hard drives at all.

Nah, this game isn't going to suck. Operation Metro sucks, and 6 year old hardware sucks. However, new hardware and Caspian Border owns bones. All of the bones.

You know what is great about such news stories, they bring up such interesting ideas about what people know or think they know about the world. Console? PC? Open systems? Closed systems? The more years that go by the more we just have to admit consoles are merely shades of grey in their differences from PCs. Moreover, by some definitions all Macs would be consoles since they are no more open than a XB360 or a PS3 today. I wouldn't even want to get into the philosophical discussion about if a iPad/iTouch or iPhone is a console; or if PS-Vita is a PC since with PlayStation Suite it might be open to playing most Android apps that people develop for any Android platform.

Is a console with upgradable parts a PC? Yes. That is for sure.

But, I will admit this was more fun to discuss 15 years ago, when you could “part for part” build your own PC that matched to your buddies’ PC; yet when you loaded a PC game that worked on his rig it would crash on your own rig. In many ways the PC has become a console more than the console has become a PC…and that is a very good thing!

The 360 runs game in C. Microsoft calls it a Media Center. Media Centers are just small PCs...
