Console Battlefield 3 to Include Optional High-Res Textures

@Tarsier: Um no. Part of the entire point of consoles is it being a self contained piece of hardware that anyone can use/play without worrying about that stuff. It also makes it significantly easier for developers since they don't have to worry about drivers, writing for different cards, etc. One piece of hardware, one simple version of the software. Period.

And more than anything, I would imagine the HD texture add-on is for people with more space on their hard drive. Lower textures by default also probably makes the game load faster if you're playing straight from the disk.

2. The caption is wrong also. The HD texture pack is NOT already running in the BETA. If it was, you would know about it. Come on! Can I have Patricks job? Seriously, the dude is NOT a good addition to the Squad.

3. This is not a big deal. This is no different than a regular install. Both PC and console fanboys need to chill.

4.Why would this HD texture pack slow down the game?Whoever said that is a fucking dildo. Why would installing anything make the game run slower? I dont see any logic to that.

Consoles are closed off and un-upgradable so developers don't have to worry about hardware differences when they code their games. If you start opening up your console and adding new things in then it will no longer be a closed platform and developers would have to develop games like to they on PC, essentially giving yourself a PC that doesn't do much. Like everyone has said so far, what you're talking about, is nothing but a PC.

I'm guessing you aren't very technologically minded, else you would have known all this anyway, so this post may go right over you head, but do try to understand.

But ya. BF3 is medium settings at 720p, however it looks like the Worlds dimensions are very similar to 1080p. I honestly dont notice a huge difference between the 2. And, I used to play MW2 on 1080p all the time. The weapons are a lil bigger, and so is the environment, but you honestly dont notice. I'm playing it on console cus I'm too cheap to build a $400 budget gaming PC.

Higher res textures require more video ram. If there is not enough vram to hold everything in a scene, it will need to swap it out causing slowness/stuttering. If it runs fine with higher res textures, why add it as an option instead of just using the higher textures as default? These are the reasons people would think it would effect performance.

Why is GiantBomb the only site reporting the texture pack is on PS3 too?

if sony or microsoft made their consoles upgradable, they would still be closed platforms because they would find a way to fucking do it. the same way they release bigger harddrives for the consoles. the fact that you can put a bigger harddrive on doesnt make it an open system does it? no because microsoft makes them and releases them. it would be the exact same for graphics cards and ram. i know, its REALLY hard to imagine..

K. What dont you comprehend? I dont notice a difference playin in 720p, but yes the PC is better. I'm playing it on console because I dont care (not cus I'm poor), I'm too cheap to waste money to play it at high res at 1080p. Ya, well when people attack why your having fun and the game you find enjoyable when nothing is wrong with it. Its a little annoying, considering a lot of them havent even played it, or dont even know what a beta is.

This game got 50 awards, and it hasnt been released. Everyone on PC loves it. Only my friends who suck at it, or play by themselves hate it. This is literally the best game I've played since CS 1.6. And, its only the beta, only has 1 map, and has 0 vehicles.

Very nice I'm definitely gonna install them on PS3 when I boot up the game for the first time, can`t wait for BF3!

Ok you really do not understand how technology works. You simply can not do that. It is impossible. Completely and utterly no way of doing it. A HDD is different. A game won't run better if you have a bigger HDD (mostly) and when developing games you DO NOT take HDD space/make/model into consideration.

A closed system is something that is a constant and cannot be changed. The software the XBOX uses to run itself WOULD NOT run if you changed components, and if they made it to do so, it would just be like them putting Windows on it. Listen to me when I say these things because I, unlike yourself, know what I am talking about.

I'm not running your idea down for any other reason than it wouldn't work. I don't care about you, your preferences, or how you play your games. I do care about facts, and that is the language I am speaking: FACT.

The Xbox is a Windows Media Center, but ya you cant upgrade anything other then the HDD. And, that wont help you run it in 1080p with Ultra settings. Not enough video ram, it would freeze up, crash, and /or melt.

Are they going to charge used game buyers for high res textures or something? Why is it not default?

I wonder how this is going to impact performance in-game. As others have said, console hardware is homogenized for a reason.
 
Are you going to install the textures if you want a higher framerate? To be fair, texture resolution doesn't impact performance nearly as much as factors like shaders, AA, or resolution, but now I'm curious how this will play out. I'm guessing it's been tested without any significant problems if DICE is making this decision.

Would be something nice for the modding community as long as it's clearly seen as not an insult...

Also the only upgrade besides HDD on a console I could ever see possible would be a better disc drive and even then that could potentially split the user base...

But the PC version of RAGE doesn't. LOL.

Not inherently. Besides, they already technically do that by making some consoles superior in hard drive memory, and adding the ability to play in HD, while some people still don't have the ability to do that yet,

Storage capacity does not change the operation of the game on the console in-game. So no, I will not accept that silly-ass technicality. An "upgradeable" console is a PC and there is a clear reason why PC gaming is significantly smaller userbase and why some people prefer consoles. A console is a closed system. Those who prefer consoles do not want system requirements.

Just tried the beta today, game is fun, can't wait to get the full version and try out some big maps with vehicles.

Oh yes, HDMI would be great, and built in wi-fi, my original xbox looks kind of out dated now.

@MichaelBach: Yeah i was in the same boat rocking my 20Gb 360 Pro for the GoW bundle back in the day. I recently upgraded and man having that 250 Gb HD and the HDMI makes playing my 360 a lot better. Also i don't have to worry about it breaking all the time.

On topic; having some extra data on disc to install so that the game will look better, great idea! I really don't see a problem with better graphics for no extra money, only some harddrive space.

Gears 3 is lame. I hated Gears 2 so i opted out of 3. 2 felt like an expansion pack.

Metro is a pretty big map. Hard to get bored of it, the beginning is kinda annoying.

You would be wasting your money if you bought gears 3 in 2 weeks no one will remember that game.

If it works I'm happy. If it puts a hitch in performance, I just won't use it. May be good to use in the single player portion.

Yeah, I got it to keep me going until BF3 comes out... kinda already finished with it :/ Really really excited for BF3! The more I play the demo map the more I like it.

Hmm.. will have to upgrade soon! Yes, you're right, if the game looks better then fine by me, just hope that it doesn't effect the frame rate :)
