Criterion Games Finally Confims Long Rumored Burnout CRASH!

The downloadable, top-down return of Burnout's "Crash" mode. What?

We've heard speculation about a downloadable game from Criterion Games called Burnout CRASH!, and at Electronic Arts' "Summer Showcase" event today in California, the game was confirmed.

Burnout CRASH! (that's the last time I'm going to capitalize the game that ridiculous way) is coming to both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, and marks the return of the popular "crash" mode from the Burnout franchise, which was removed from Burnout Paradise.

This is not exactly what I was expecting from a reinvention of Burnout's
This is not exactly what I was expecting from a reinvention of Burnout's "crash" mode.

This time, however, it's from a top-down perspective. The game features three game modes that aren't detailed in the press release, with 18 "crash junctions" spread across six locations, and also incorporates the popular leaderboard expanding Autolog feature from Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

The game's also going to feature--wait for it, you're gonna be excited!--Kinect support, wherein two teams utilize "gestural controls" to make the crashes happen. Sounds like a Happy Hour segment waiting to happen, no?

Burnout Crash! arrives sometime this fall.

Jeff, Brad and Drew are at the event, so look for more coverage on Burnout Crash! and other games at today's event soon.

I want Paradise 2 as well, unfortunately the Burnout whine-o's just wanted crash mode from Takedown, and menus apparently. We can hope they're working on a new Paradise as well, and this does look pretty cool all things considered.

Yes, looks like fun:) But then again.... I loved paradise. Just driving around, having a look here and there. finding all the gates, races. and the dj. Loved him at first. 5 hours in i switched to my own music^^ Anyway, paradise2...come on :)

I loved it in Takedown, but I don't know about this.  I'm going to need to play a demo before I make a decision either way.

@SeriouslyNow: I think the point was that supporting kinect doesn't automatically make a game bad. These aren't kinect only games, they just happen to support them as an option. Regardless, I'm not sure why there's so much backlash here. It's not Paradise 2, but it looks like a fun little stop gap. I'm willing to bet that a top down, GTA-esque crash game is going to be a lot of fun, and that has nothing to do with me being a Criterion fanboy.. in fact, I didn't even think Paradise was a particularly good game.

Top down doesn't equate to GTA-esque. GTA's top down mechanic came from late 80s and early 90s games before it like Micro Machines racers. Top down is just top down. There's nothing GTA-like about this game.

Now you're just being pedantic. When most people see top down driving games like this, they think old school GTA. If Micro Machines were still relevant, I might have referenced them.

Not at all. I'm making a point that calling this game GTA-esque is wrong on all counts, just as calling it Micro-Machines related would be. It's top-down that's all. There's nothing marginally GTA about this game at all, aside from being a car game which is top-down. There are lots of top-down driving games. This isn't even a driving game and it has no shooting or car theft.

I've never seen an announcement like this that was so universally panned. As much as I would like to be a contrarion on this and say "this could be fun" I can't. Honestly this isn't what I wanted. What I expected was the crash mode from Burnout Revenge ripped out and re skinned. This... I'm passing on this. Never thought I would say that about a game made by Criterion.

@SeriouslyNow: So because it has support for Kinect, it's Kinect shovelware crap. I guess that makes Mass Effect 3 shovelware, who knew! And because the almighty GB crew dismissed it out of hand after three screenshots, we're all supposed to stupidly fall in line? No thanks, sheep. Criterion has a track record that tells me to give anything they make the benefit of the doubt before dismissing it. By all means, though, carry on your mix of whining and planting one on GB's ass.

Comparing this, a downloadable title and Mass Effect 3 (because it has Kinect) or even Chinatown Wars (because it's top down) just isn't apt at all. ne fuel no this game looks shit. Hey, but if you consider this a good platform to make your mark and stand out against the sheep, go right ahead and plant one firmly between the cheeks of Criterion's arse. I'm sure when the game does come out you'll be proved right. Lobtha Munthta.

This is so sad, I was at least hoping for an arcade game that would be like playing the crash mode in the older games. This on the other hand I have no intrest in buying or even playing. I just hope that the next game will have a proper crash mode.

@clstirens: I didn't think this game spawned from anything related to Paradise. More likely, it's an offshoot product that has no effect on whatever retail games Criterion has in the hopper. Another racing game is doubtlessly well into development over there, completely unaffected by Crash, and that's why the whining boggles my mind.

I wasn't implying it was affecting any major product in development at all (though other may be implying this). What I'm talking about is this product stagnating a brand name and image. It could either bolster the brand by introducing it to arcade casual players, and it could stagnate it by producing a low quality product, or just by merit of the "too many, too soon" issue*.

That being said, I am completely disappointed now that I've seen this.  Don't take that to mean I think this game looks crappy, and don't take that to mean I hate change (which, not to judge to harshly, I think you're accusing a lot of people off who share my opinion).  You see, when we originally heard about a crash-focused burnout, burnout fans probably had memories of flying at high speed in a sweet car, towards traffic.  This is not that, hence dissapointment.

This is why I said it shouldn't be called burnout. By calling it burnout, you create expectations (it's a quality brand after all). When it's nothing like those expectations, you have consumer confusion.  If this were called something else, but was the same game, you could see that it was made by Criterion and take it as a fun, bite-sized crash game from the burnout guys.  But of course I know a least a little about how publishers operate, so it's no surprise at all they'd want to capitalize on the name. I can't blame them, really.

*see: Guitar Hero (though, that's a bit of an extreme example.)

You guys bitch about every damn thing. Thank god some people don't listen to you.
I though Paradise was them trying something different? On top of that, I though the backlash on Paradise WAS that it was different. They gave us something different, and this game spawned from those fans that bitched about the changes Paradise made.

Except that this isn't what THEY wanted either. So fans of classic burnout and fans of Paradise are in a state of "WTF" right now. Basically, this game shouldn't be called burnout, but it is because of "lol marketing, lol brand name" and the fans are understandably confused, and slightly upset.

I'm all for new and exciting games, but if you're going to try something different, don't slap an established brand on it. All you end up doing is stagnating the amount of freedom given to make an interesting idea (by anchoring it in the source material) and at the same time you dilute the brand.

I'd rather this be a title under a different name. Criterion-made or not.

Kind of sad that the follow-up to one of the best games of this generation is a downloadable game that removes everything that made Paradise so amazing. I'm at a point where Need for Speed: Burnout is an agreeable compromise that has to happen. 60 frames, open world racing. Do it again, slap that stupid name on it and you got yourself 3 million copies or more.

Who bitched about Burnout Takedown, Revenge or Paradise? All three sold really well. This game is just a piece of shit Kinect shovelware cash-in. People aren't bitching, they're calling it out correctly, as did the GB crew.

I have no idea how this could turn out. It could either have the screen filled with explosions that create a sense of depth to what you're doing or it could just be another top down game trying to be good. Still Criterion has delivered in the past, and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

The best part of crash mode was all the extremely detailed crashes that you got to watch happen. Without the graphical fidelity, what does that leave us with? a crappy super-precise puzzle game.

Although, I dunno, Lobstuh Monstahs sound alright...

Is this a joke? Selling what seems to be a Facebook game as a full fledged XBLA product? No. Give us something with better quality instead of this shovel-ware crap that belong on social networks. I understand that companies within this industry need to make money, but how far is too far to pursue greed? Is destroying beloved franchises really the best laid plan to make a profit? In the long run the answer is no. If there is anything that we can learn from the past, namely the great video game crash of the early 80's; having a track record of over priced, low quality, games is an abandonment of the consumer. And consumers will respond in kind.
