Crysis 2 and Others Disappear from Steam, EA's Relationship With Steam Unknown [UPDATED]

EA claims Crysis 2 was taken down because the business terms on Steam have changed.

UPDATE: Electronic Arts has responded to my questions regarding its current relationship with Steam, claiming Crysis 2 was not removed from Steam because EA asked. Instead, EA claims Steam "imposed a set of business terms" that resulted in an existing agreement Crytek had regarding Crysis 2 that "violates the new rules," resulting in the "expulsion" of Crysis 2.

I've asked EA for better clarification on what "business terms" have changed and why games like Alice: Madness Returns are no longer on Steam. I've also requested comment from Valve.

The full statement is below:

"It’s unfortunate that Steam has removed Crysis 2 from their service. This was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA.

Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service – many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam.

Crysis 2 continues to be available on several other download services including GameStop, Amazon, Origin.com and more."

ORIGINAL STORY: When Electronic Arts decided to heavily push its Origin web portal and distribution service at E3, alongside word it would be the exclusive home to Star Wars: The Old Republic, it became an open question whether EA would continue to play ball with Steam. We appear to have an answer to that question, with Crysis 2, Alice: Madness Returns and Battlefield 3 all disappearing.

So far, I've been unable to get an answer from any party involved. Valve, EA and Crytek have all, to date, remained unresponsive. Other outlets are reporting a statement's coming later today.

You can still, however, purchase other EA games on Steam. Crysis and Need for Speed are still there, as is the Need for Speed series. It mostly seems that EA's chosen to start holding back its most recent and upcoming releases, in hopes of driving consumer traffic to its own service.

As soon as I know more, I'll pass it on.

Man, EA were actually starting to turn themselves around and now they are burning bridges like crazy. First the BF3 controversy, now pulling stuff off of steam and making it exclusive to Origin.

This just seems like a pretty piss-poor, brute force method of making people use Origin; which is literally their download manager they've been using for a while now, rebranded.

What happens to those people who own Crysis 2 on Steam now? What happens if and when EA decides to completely pull out of Steam?

Interesting update.

I wonder what deal Crytek made with another service to violate their agreement with Valve.

I wonder if it has something to do with how DLC is handled in Steam now. I thought it was interesting that Fable III DLC is available directly through Steam day-and-date when it's a GFWL game. Maybe Crytek wouldn't play ball.

Good move on EA. People seem to forget that Steam is run by Valve, a video game company and a rival for EA. I mean, can you even buy TF2 or other Valve games anywhere else other than Steam? Nope, double standards need to go away.

EA publishes the retail version of Team Fortress 2. You can buy TF2(for PC or any other version for that matter) at any retail store including amazon.

Were those games ever ON Steam to begin with? I don't remember seeing preorders, but I might be wrong.

Sucks for steam people, i don't buy digital i always buy physical copies, never cared for DD because i like to own my copy and not have to worry about bandwidth, bandwidth caps, services going down etc. I do buy DD if it's the only possible way to get it (console wise only) but always back the file up on a thumb drive and burn that backup on a dvd-r and make my own case.

Just as long as Mass Effect 3 is coming out on Steam.

And we'll see if this really IS something Valve is forcing upon Crytek / EA.

Why would other games be taken off of Steam then if it were just a contract with Crytek?

Ever since that deal with Portal 2 I've felt like EA is finding ways to eliminate Valve.

What did Crytec mess up this time? I can't believe Valve changed something so drastic. But we'll never know unless they respond.

I really wish the internet could just band together and agree not to ever purchase anything from Origin.  Go to a store if you have to, just don't buy their products off Origin.

I wonder how many people who bought Crysis 2 on steam are SOL at this point. Also, is this the first game that's ever been delisted from Steam?

@slyspider
Same thing with me, unless they can offer the functionality of steam plus more, then I won't even bother with BF3. I'd rather buy MW3 with steam achievements instead. Even if EA did one-up Steam with Origin, I would still buy MW3 over BF3 on PC.

Tinfoil hat theory: I wonder if Crysis was excluded by INACTION by EA. For instance, Steam updates their TOS and EA has to click-through agree for each title it sells. They don't click on agree for Crysis which results in removal.

That allows EA to say that they were excluded rather than having to say that they pulled it from the store.

The game called "80 Classic Atari Games in One" has been delisted because of compatibility issues with Win7. But It's still in my games list and I can launch it at any time, even though the Store Page link takes me back to the Steam homepage. And I was just able to delete then install it again. So chances are that people who bought Crysis 2 on Steam are still able to download and play their game.

The rest is insanity that doesn't deserve a response, like almost all of the shit in this thread.

In a couple more years their download service will fail just like their old one did and they'll be on Steam again. This isn't exactly the first time they've done this.

I'd love to see what a typical Steam agreement looks like. I bet they aren't quite the paladins of gaming virtue they are often made out to be. Steam's dominance gives Valve a very strong arm to dictate how other companies behave, and I suspect they aren't above using it.

@Jack_Daniels I know it's hyperbole but it is pretty true for me as well. The only other service I use is Impulse, but that's only so I can play StarDock made games like Galactic Civilizations II which are exclusive to their own service.

I believe those business terms were, "We don't want to pay our competitor Valve every time we sell our game," which is too bad, because Steam is awesome.

EA did this fully knowing the terms they agreed to. Therefore they chose to break their legal agreement. Therefore, Origin.com can go fuck itself.

How is that any different whatsoever? If anything Impulse is worse than Origin because you need to launch games from it. Whereas the EA Dwnloader (Origin) is just that: a downloader and installer. You don't need to have it running in the background like Impulse or Steam. And if you buy a first party EA game on disc, you can just enter your key to get a digital backup of the game added to your account for free. In fact the only game I bought form Impulse was Dragon Age, and I only did so because I could just register the key with EA and never have to touch the impulse client.

You act like there's a new password you have to remember, when EVERYBODY who plays videogames already has an EA account. I understand people would rather use Steam only, but when folks start listing things they'd rather do that have many more flaming hoops to jump through, you begin to question the integrity of these people's arguments.

@Alphazero: Except it's not, because I not only have to hand over my $60 to EA for BF3 on PC, I also have to hand over my CC information, my e-mail address, and make a new password. I don't want to do that all over again, when I already gave it to Valve and to Steam. I'm kind of upset that EA thinks they can pull this off, Valve totally switched gears at some point from being a developer of video games to a developer of the iTunes for video games. EA really has to be totally committed to this idea of a DD service if they want me to pay attention

It wasn't EA.

@Arubiano420: And they're entitled to trying to cut themselves a piece of that pie, but they're going to have to try harder than just giving us a downloader and installer. I want to be able to find my friends, record gameplay footage, take screenshots, download mods seamlessly, and benchmark my system. Steam only does 3 out of those 5 things. If they grab the other two and make them work well and play nice with existing games, then that is Steam's pie forever.

None of that is true. A: you already have an EA password if you've played any online enabled EA game in the past 5 years.

B: You just have to drop the money on a disc copy and enter the key in Origin once logged in and it will add the game to your owned list.

C: You can still add games to Steam and get all the benefits like screenshots and friends lists and all that shit.

Then I guess just Steam requires that now, which is even more counter intuitive to peoples rage.

@MrKlorox: I haven't to my knowledge, but just buying a game with cash is super smart, I'm coming around on Origin.

However, having to have Steam running in the background is not that big an issue for me. Just like having to run the Xbox dashboard in the background on the 360 is not an issue for most people. I can see what my friends are playing on Steam and jump pretty seamlessly into their game if I so choose. I can also take screenshots and browse the web. I don't see what the big deal is, other than people being afraid of DRM.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that Steam is perfect, I'm saying that it is very, very close in my opinion. It really only needs to recommend games that would run great on a particular machine and record in game video. I think that would be great.
