Crysis 3 Officially Exists, Will Be Out Next Spring

Newest sequel will take place inside the urban jungle of New York City.

Fairly substantial rumors popped up last week that the latest game in developer Crytek's popular Crysis shooter franchise would be getting an official announce sometime in the not-too-distant future. Apparently, that not-too-distant future translated to, like, a week, because hey, now we have a Crysis 3 announcement.

To be fair, there are parts of the Lower East Side that pretty much already look just like this.
To be fair, there are parts of the Lower East Side that pretty much already look just like this.

The official announcement confirmed what we more or less already knew: that we'd be returning to New York City, and that our hero would have a totally sick looking bow. He's got that bow because he'll be traversing the dangerous rain forest environment that's evolved out of the doomed city. Crytek promises seven distinct environments set across the domed NYC, as well as all manner of corporate chicanery and revenge plotting.

So, there you have it. Crysis 3 is totally a thing, and looks like it'll meld the jungle environments of the first game with the urban environments of the second one, to create some kind of Frankenjunglecity. EA states the game is expected to release in Spring of 2013. There are pre-order bonuses too, because of course there are. You can read all about them in the official press release.

Despite Crysis 2 lacking in parts, I'm looking forward to this. At least interested.

Only played the multiplayer of Crysis 2 and I thought it was pretty cool. I'm just getting so tired of all of these games, I need something vastly different.

I can't wait to die in three shots and have to sneak everywhere because that's the only logical way the designers made the game to play.

The whole being in a city factor was exactly what I didn't like about Crysis 2.

Same problem as all their games - introduce the aliens and everything gets real boring real fast.

Glad to see that they've found some creaky narrative reason to have you fighting Cell soldiers again. I really, really liked Crysis 2, despite all the flaws. Hopefully they've either redone the alien AI to make them remotely interesting/challenging or they focus more on human opponents.

And wider environments. Although, when compared to MW and other recent FPS games, Crysis 2's environments were definitely a lot more open. They just didn't live up to the breadth of the first game which I think is why they get so much unwarranted (well, to me at least) hate.

I wonder if it'll be as hand holdey as Crysis 2

Every single level you went to, the game would tell you "tactical options available" and just flat out tell you which is the stealth path, which the action path. Hey guess what. That shit was fucking retarded. In Crysis 1 you were just told about an objective then 'go' and left to figure it out on your own.

Oh how quickly Crytek lost their roots..

@Ravenlight: well Crysis 2 sold over 3 million copies so I assume so. I personally loved the first one and enjoyed the second (although the lack of check-points wound me up a lot).

I thought the gameplay in Crysis 1 and 2 was terrible. Maybe they can put a little more work into that this time.

That pretty much was my biggest problem, plus the suit's voice was goddamn irritating to listen to.

How the fuck are they making another Crysis game in NYC and also a jungle? I swear that shit was played after the original Crysis. There's nothing about that franchise that makes it interesting except the open-world aspect so here's hoping they do something about that in a big way. Even still I had my fill of jungle-based Crytek gameplay after Crysis so basically what I'm saying is fuck this franchise (for me).

I would be interested if they make it more like Crysis 1, somehow I doubt that.

Will be interested to see if they keep with the dumbed down COD clone style gameplay of two or go back to the much more entertaining open ended design of the first.

I thought Crysis 1 was going to be the future of shooter gameplay. I was so stoked for the potential it set up.

Crysis 2 was...simply good. Not much more.

Can't say I'm all that excited for Crysis 3. Especially if it's on the current console generation.

I read the first line before I read who wrote it and said to myself "that sounds exactly like Alex." Yep. Totally Alex.

Is it sad or cool that I can identify exactly every one of the GB crew just by the first few lines of an article?

Out of context I would have guessed that it was from the front page of Penny Arcade. Either way, I didn't notice or care until you pointed it out, and even then I would give it a, "meh."

To be fair, Alex has easily the most distinct writing style on the site, because he writes in a conversational style that includes all of his odd speech affectations. Specifically, he is the only Giant Bomb staff member that will say "is a thing/is totally a thing".

And it really pissed me off when Enslaved basically used it as a fakeout and got you out of NYC within the first hour or so. Hopefully these guys can use it to better effect (even if I'd rather Crytek just let UK finish TimeSplitters 4).

It's an overgrown foresty new york, which sounds awesome to me. It also sounds like it is going to be more on the Crysis side, not Crysis 2 side of things, with an openish (or maybe even open) world. Maybe a Bioshock esque structure to the world/locale?

How is that true?

  • Crysis
  • Crysis Warhead
  • Crysis Wars
  • Crysis Sandbox
  • Crysis Sandbox 2
  • Crysis 2

3 out of 6 of those are standalone games and 2 are still being played, while the Sandbox is still being used by modders. It's definitely a franchise.
