Crysis 3 Seems to Exist, Will Probably Be Announced Soon

EA inadvertently lets the nanosuit out of the lab a bit early via Origin.

As with all blockbuster franchises that people generally like (or are at least indifferent toward), the question surrounding the unveiling of next entry in Crytek's rather popular Crysis series wasn't so much one of "if" as "when." The answer? Right now! Sort of.

The odds of that price sticking are...poor, at best. But that bow is pretty bitchin', right?
The odds of that price sticking are...poor, at best. But that bow is pretty bitchin', right?

Though it hasn't been officially announced just yet, Crysis 2 publisher EA inadvertently let the nanotechnology-enhanced cat out of the alien infested bag a tad early last night, putting up a page for the game on the company's Origin system before quickly pulling it down. Not quick enough, however, as the Internet, ever-watching as it is, managed to snag the relevant screenshots before EA went into "pretend this doesn't exist" mode.

The listing has only been verified via screenshot (and the $49.99 price point for all versions listed suggests this was either an inaccurate test page or just a flat-out lie), but the likelihood of the game's existence stems from other evidence as well. CVG teased a major new project from Crytek just a month ago, and Swedish video game magazine Game Reactor has been teasing a cover for its forthcoming issue that would seem to point toward a new Crysis franchise entry.

All of this should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt until EA sends out an official press release of some kind, or at least until someone can verify that Game Reactor cover story. That said, the idea of a Crysis 3 existing isn't exactly hard to believe. Now, if you'd said that Crytek was finally going to be unveiling TimeSplitters 4, then I might have a little trouble believing you. But this? It's practically a foregone conclusion. (Sorry, TimeSplitters fans.)

If they get rid of that annoying voice that tells you when your stealth is engaged every time you use it then I might be interested. Seems minor but that voice annoyed me to the point that I didnt even bother trying to finished crysis 2.

Crysis 1 and Warhead looked phenomenal (and still does!), was loads of fun to mess around in, and had an excellent mod community that cranked out some real gems. (Mechwarrior Living Legends, anyone?)

Crysis 2 had its fun times, though the linearity and CoD-ness of it grated on me a bit. Still, I felt Crytek made a sincere effort to translate the wide-open jungle environment into an "urban jungle", even if the environment wasn't ideal. However, the hand-holding "TACTICAL OPTIONS AVAILABLE. GO HERE FOR A SNIPER RIFLE" really put me off, though. And the first game's overlooked Battlefield-esque multiplayer mode was completely gone! WTF!

So I've learned my lesson. Gonna wait for reviews and a price drop before I jump for 3.

Crysis 2, for someone who didn't play the first game and didn't have any expectations of greatness, was a fun game. Linear, Modern Warfare-esque direction and pacing, tight controls and shooting mechanics, interesting backstory and theme. A lot of cinematics.

For someone who played Crysis 1, or someone who has gaming standards and can spot a lousy business practice of streamlining games to appeal to wider audiences, Crysis 2 was really a big embarassment.

And for someone who's all time favorite shooter was Crysis, (yours truly), Crysis 2 was a staggering abomination.

Unless Crysis 3 provides the non-linearity, environmental diversity, focus on gameplay potential by allowing all kinds of approaches, styles and combinations strung together to allow players to create their own scenarios rather than placing them in a locked pre-set arena to go through like a lab rat, and LOSE THE CALL OF DUTY CINEMATICS that pull the control away from the player mid-action and show overly dramatic crap featuring american soldiers, I'll be passing on Crysis 3.

But seeing as EA have totally demolished anything that Battlefield, Crysis, Medal of Honor, or the Bioware titles have given us (for the past 10 years) in a matter of months, I doubt Crysis stands a chance.

I didn't want to get into this discussion at all, but I have to say I'm shocked about this point. I'm mainly a PC gamer, living in Canada, and I've pretty much never paid less for a PC game than a console game. They're always the same price up here, and quite often a few bucks more. They're also usually the same price on Steam. Looking at the physical stack of games here that I've got handy, about 30 games in boxes bought in the last 3-4 years, I can't honestly say that any of them were cheaper than the console version. Damn man...is this how it is in the States? I'm going down there to buy my games from now on if that's the case...

IMHO, the main thing Crysis 1 had going for it was that it was the perfect killer app for PC hardware upgrades. Finally a reason, besides a few extra frames per second, that you could simply glance at the screen and go "wow, that's what a bleeding edge GPU can do!? Damn!"

Are they going to try that again with this one, and if so, won't that leave the console versions in the dust, graphics and performance-wise?

Sure, I'll play another Crysis. Loved the first Crysis and the second one had some great moments for sure. God, I love that body armor and their guns are always so awesome to shoot. I think this may be my best comment ever.

I wont, fuck you EA. Crysis 2 was a colossal dissapointment and you are assholes to the max. Your origin prices are a fucking joke.

It's the Same Fucking Game.

I'm a PC gamer and even I can't think anything but "Fuck that entitled prick."

Seriously, grow up. PC and console games should absolutely be the same price. Always.

Dude, i'm not sure from what land you hale. Here though, pc gamers have always been about a quarter of the price cheaper than console games. The only pc games that have generally cost the same amount as console games are Call Of Duty and Blizzard titles. This is most likely because they know they have a "hot" game I think (being greedy cunts) they raise the price. Nothing to do with being an "entitled prick". If you see someone is taking the piss and a game with the price a quarter of the price more "hey, thats hmmmm" is a natural god given reaction.

Yeah, PC games at retail - and especially digital - are often sold cheaper than their console counterparts because much of the console's up-front cost goes to the console manufacturers themselves (in this case, Sony and Microsoft). PC doesn't have this problem, so when you go to factor in what the costs are covering when a PC version is sold dollar-for-dollar same price as console, those costs are "because we want more money so fuck you".

I absolutely agree the PC version should be sold cheaper. There's no overhead to cover. The PC version should and will always be the cheapest version to sell, especially over their own first-party client. There's no reason other than greed to charge any more for it than the market standard - and plenty of reasons to charge less.

Crossbow? Where?

Other than that, I agree. I liked Crysis 2, but, damn, going through the first Pinger boss 5 times on supersoldier was stupid because of a glitch. The voice acting was alright, as long as you weren't looking at whoever-was-speaking's face.

I'd be REALLY excited about this if they hadn't borked the multiplayer portion of Crysis 2. Instead of patching things regularly, and fixing the bugs and lag, they just decided to give us map packs instead. I can't support that.

A cursory glance at the wikipedia page of Crytek UK (formerly Timesplitters dev Free Radical Design) suggests that they are developing Homefront 2.

You wanted more "Team America" bullshit like you saw in such hits as Battlefield, Call of Duty and Medal of Honour to name but a few rather than time travelling zombie monkey mutiplayer shenanigans, right guys?

I played the XBox 360 console versions of Crysis 1 and 2 and I must say I liked 2 quite a bit more. The story in 2 was a roller coaster ride that was more than just a generic alien invasion tale. The enemy AI provided a real challenge as well, and I had fun trying out different Stealth/Shoot-everything-moveing options in the game world.

The multiplayer was enjoyable as well, I checked it out the other night and there was easy to get into a game: I discovered you get an achivement for playing multiplayer at least 6 months after you first did so : )

Wouldn't it make more sense to just have a separate rumors section of the site? For that matter, articles like "Some Thoughts on Molyjam" aren't really news either, and should be under some kind of other category as well. Basically, it's all good stuff, but I wouldn't consider it news. The word just seems to have a very loose definition nowadays.

And then exactly what? Where would it show up? Wouldn't it still be on the front of the site? What purpose would it functionally serve and do you think people would actually digest the information any differently? In any case, I think a listing showing up is news enough. In this case, Navarro missed the mark as anyone was able to look up the product listing themselves. I would classify that as news. It's not exactly a Best Buy page with name of unannounced game popping out of nowhere.

It's certainly appropriate content to post on a gaming site, I wouldn't argue that. If I were a Crysis fan I would definitely want to know something like this. So in that sense, I think it is something that should be on the front page of the site (or at the very least, in the same area as the news is located), I'm just not sure it should be lumped in with official game announcements and trailers and the like. And while excellent, articles like Worth Reading are even further from actual news, and are more like editorial pieces. So I'm not sure those should even be on the same page as those other articles (even though they deserve to be read).

I just think there could be a more efficient method of organization of these things, so that the viewer can get the information they want more quickly, by doing less self-parsing. As far as specifics, I would probably put the confirmed and unconfirmed news side by side on the front page, and things like the Molyjam article and Worth Reading under a separate articles tab.

I also want to make clear that I'm not singling out Giant Bomb in particular when it comes to this issue I perceive as "news clutter"; in fact, I think you guys are much better than most sites about it. Looking through your news section, I don't ever remember seeing any articles in the form of a question ("Is Angry Birds coming to Colecovision?"), and that's a great thing in my opinion. So I hope I didn't come across as hostile. I'm only posting criticism because I love the site and want it to be even better :)

So your cool with just paying for the costs of certification, even though the platform doesn't have a certification cost associated with it? That's like paying sales tax on something where tax isn't required and the retailer just pocketing the cash.

No one really cares about that outside of boardrooms, nor should they. PC versions are the best versions 90% of the time or more

So we shouldn't care about them having the ability to bypass cost cuts and advertently not pass it down to consumer level? And 90%, eh? So I'm guessing we're not taking EA games into this scientific statistic.

I actually enjoyed Crysis 2 more than Crysis 1, mainly because I felt while Crysis 1 had a great sandbox environment, the missions were a little too open ended for my liking and I never felt the shooting was very satisfying. The main draw of Crysis 1 for me was the graphics while I feel that I was actually quite drawn toward the gunplay of Crysis 2. Anyway, if Crysis 3 ends up being a little bit of Crysis 1 combined with Crysis 2, I can't complain about that.

I have to say, it really bothers me when sites post rumors like this in their news section. Don't get me wrong, I love reading about rumors when there is substantial evidence to back them up, but shouldn't news be comprised of verified information? And the worst thing is that it happens almost everywhere. I've stopped visiting many sites for this reason. Patrick and Giant Bomb have been pretty good about it, but then posts like this show up and make me cringe.

A crossbow? I love the Crysis series, but damn if it's too bad what they did with the console versions of Crysis 2. Bugs everywhere, and one thing that hindered all platforms was somewhat bad voice acting. Also, put the prone feature back in. I think since I like Crysis so much, the lack of Timesplitters talk is OK. I still wish they made a fourth one though.

I think you meant a compound bow.

Inadvertent my eye. EA's shameless stock manipulation in effect once again. Imagine if you will a corporation only days ago awarded the title of worst Company in America for 2012 and with no good news to offset this bad press we all of a sudden get a sneak of this popular release on the distant horizon...Well played EA well played.

This very well could be the case. But, I like the Crysis series so far, and will be looking forward to this one.

Hope they develop an actual story that I care about this time around. Probably not.
