Dark Void Gets Faux-Retro Prequel

Dark Void Zero due for DSiWare in January.

It even has some fake-old box art to go with it.
It even has some fake-old box art to go with it.
I love a good, fake story. Capcom's telling a really nice one with the announcement of Dark Void Zero, which is under development at Other Ocean and scheduled for release on DSiWare in January. The game is an 8-bit-styled faux-throwback (fauxback?), designed to make it seem like the real Dark Void, also scheduled for release in January, is really an update to an old NES game that never saw the light of day.

The in-game story of Dark Void Zero will have you in the role of Randy, the first human born in the Void. You'll fight the same Watchers that Will Grey fights in the proper Dark Void, and you'll also receive some assistance from Nikola Tesla. The game will contain three levels, which sounds like just enough to make the joke work.

The out-of-game story claims that the game was originally in development for Nintendo's first dual-screen hardware, the arcade-based PlayChoice-10, and that it was viewed as a combination of Section Z's simple flying-and-shooting gameplay with Mega Man's more advanced level structure. From the looks of the screenshots, you'll have to blow into the DS microphone to "blow the dust off the cartridge" before you can play it. That's a nice, goofy little touch.

Expect to see the game out on a Monday in January for 500 Nintendo Shop points.

Really clever way to sell a backstory... Only question is, why is it on a Nintendo platform?.. The clever marketers at Capcom should have this as a free download on XBL & PSN to get us in the mood for the full game. You can drag a horse to water... but you can't force it to drink  ;  )

It's not as if they invented a genre and now people are refining and innovating on that idea.  It's just a novel little concept that starts to rub me the wrong way when overused.  You don't have to agree, but that is how I feel.  If this game is awesome, then great for DSi owners, but that still doesn't make me want a faux-retro tie-in for every Capcom IP.  "
I do.

Nintendo can't win. Either there's nothing for DSiWare or something good comes out and people are mad its just for DSiWare.

I'm digging this idea, but why release what is essentially a promotional tool for Dark Void on a platform that the game won't be appearing on?

That said, this alone is reason enough for me to finally upgrade to the DSi.

All this Matt Hazard talk is revisionist history.  Mega Man 9 came out long before Eat Lead, as did Bionic Commando Rearmed, so if anyone ripped off the idea it was the Matt Hazard people.  Capcom is just continuing to enjoy the little niche they created with another retro-style game.

Frankly, the last few games they've put out have been better than the big modern ones, so more of these is something they should be doing.

Really now, if "real hardcore gamers" don't get the appeal here, that's fine, this is for the people who played games back during and before 199X. As opposed to around 2003 or so. So just move along.

@Driadon: Is the release of retro games (which Wii Ware is known for) really all that different than the release of retro-style games?

@supermike6: I heard that. I kept saying to myself: If DSi Ware is anything like Wii Ware, why would I want it. Now, I can safely say I want it.

This is kind of starting to become a tired concept.  They already kind of stole the idea from Matt Hazard, but it's also piggybacking on their use of 8-bit graphics for both Mega Man 9 and 10.

If this was released for any other platform id be really interested but I dont own a DSi (I like my Fat DS) and there isnt enough DSi exclusive content to make me buy a whole new DS when my current one works. If this was on WiiWare/PSN/XBLA/PC id totally get it.

Thats a pretty clever idea, kind of like what Matt Hazzard should have done... had it been a good game.

I guess we will never see this or an upgraded version on xbox live or psn?
