David Jaffe Leaving Eat Sleep Play After Twisted Metal

Designer downplays reported casual future, but confirms eventual departure.

David Jaffe joined Giant Bomb for one of its many reaaaaaally long podcasts this past E3.

David Jaffe will leave Eat Sleep Play after the latest Twisted Metal is finished, according to comments by the designer on Twitter.

The initial report on Jaffe and Eat Sleep Play came from The Salt Lake City Tribune, which reported both Jaffe and Eat Sleep Play would technically be parting ways, but both pursuing casual games.

Jaffe downplayed the characterization of his future career as a casual game designer on Twitter.

“Talking2peeps about some big, huge next gen game ideas I'd love for us2make, as well as cool stuff in the browser space (action oriented, gamer centric)& a few things in between,” he said.

In essence, it appears that very little groundwork has been laid for Jaffe’s life after Eat Sleep Play, only that he’ll continue to work on Twisted Metal following its launch, but will move on soon after.

Jaffe also clarified there are still no plans to produce downloadable content for Twisted Metal.

“We're totally supporting game post launch with balance tweaking, tuning, and bug crunching, he said. “But I've been saying for a YEAR there was no DLC planned. But the team- me included- is still cranking on TM post launch.”

Twisted Metal launches next week.

No! Not my David!

again?

Seems like odd timing to announce this.

Posted by Atwa

So weird news.

Posted by Cyrisaurus

This is for the better, for those who can't tell.

He currently works from home, and ESP works on the game hundreds of miles away in Utah.

Jaffe wants to go back to being internal so he can work with his team in person.

I forgot Twisted Metal was coming out so soon.

I'm taking this to read: "This is your last good Twisted Metal, bitches." :(

No f-bombs? What happened to the real Jaffe?

Posted by Hot_Karl

I'm gonna miss that son of a bitch.

That's what I was thinking. I thought Jaffee wanted to found his own company. He did. Now what does he want to do? I'm confused.

Posted by evilalfie

Does this mean Calling All Cars 2?

Posted by Hailinel

Wasn't Jaffe the reason ESP was formed in the first place?

Posted by spartanlolz92

but its his company im confused whats going and then in the interview he was talking about how if twisted metal sold well enough hed like to do sequel.

theres just so many contradictions :/.

jaffe ill can say you make great games please continue doing so

Best of luck to him.

It was. ESP also has a three-game deal with Sony, Twisted Metal being the first part of that contract. I don't get this at all.

Jaffe is not exactly the easiest person to work with, but eh. The DLC comment also sounds weird, because Twisted Metal could benefit greatly from DLC.

I don't get this guy. I like him, but Christ, why do I feel he'll be back at Sony in the next 2 years with a new company?

Edited by iAmJohn

Wait, what? Jaffe's leaving the company he helped form to do other things? Am I the only one who fails to see the logic in this?

I see. I suppose that makes sense.

David Jaffe's glowing ass. Must... not... keep... staring...

@Ghostiet: Like a previous user said, he was working from home and ESP were hundreds of miles away.

I also doubt he's leaving to work on casual games if ESP is going to migrate to casual themselves.

Posted by Napalm

I'm not sure why didn't mention this, but Eat Sleep Play is based out of Utah, and he's in California. He said his main reason for leaving was he missed the whole sort face to face part of development.

Good job, Patrick!

Sucks, considering I just played the TM demo yesterday and was blown away. Not sure what'll happen with Eat, Sleep, Play, but after Jaffe leaves a studio good things continue to happen there. And, as always, I can't wait to see what he does next. Knowing Jaffe, we'll probably get a straight answer as to what's going on, unless there's some legal restrictions.

@Napalm, @Cyrisaurus, @Sammo21: This makes sense, thanks for clearing it up. Because this initially really sounded like a weird fit.

David fucking Jaffe developing fucking casual games. That can't be fucking right.

Edited by Hairydutchman

I read "David Jaffe leaving Eat Sleep after playing Twisted Metal".

Posted by JazGalaxy

Jaffe is a gunslinger. His M.O. since day one has been work with a studio, sell it to Sony, make a new studio, sell it to sony, make a new studio.

ALSO, Jaffe is totally a guy who likes GAMES. In listening to him talk, he doesn't like where these "AAA experiences" are going. I can see him getting into mobile to continue making real games.

Posted by BadNews

Kinda saw this coming ever since the podcast he was on. Kinda sounded like his creativity was being hindered because he was pretty much forced to make twisted metal. Not that twisted metal will be bad, looks really good but sounds like he wants more personal and creative work than large scale iterations of previous work.

Posted by N7

Wait... W.... Huh? What!?

Well, it makes sense that his studio was formed a long ways away from him, but jeez. This is kind of a bummer.

He must feel like Netherrealm Studios after they shipped Mortal Kombat. An overwhelming sensation of "Oh shit, what do we do now?".

Well, he did create God of War. :P

Joking aside, I wish him all the best in his future endeavours. I never really paid attention to his games in the past, but from what I've seen of his vlogs and other appearances he's a really down-to-earth guy who's genuinely passionate about what he does. The industry needs more people like him.

If ESP is his studio, why didn't he nut up and move to Utah?

Because he has a family?

Posted by AhmadMetallic

So wait, he started this studio in 2007, haven't made a single game yet, and will leave said  studio when they release their first game?

Nice.

Edited by AuthenticM

He needs to fucking make God of War 4 and make it more like Zelda and Darksiders, just as he said he'd like to do.

Posted by MrMazz

well thats a bummer

Posted by Stackboy

I would have thought if anything a split from ESP would be announced after launch.

He will land on his feet, he always does.

Posted by JJRage

@aceofspudz: I live in Utah and I don't really want to live here, so I don't blame him.

There are a lot of small studios here. Cost of living is lower, so they can pay their employees less.

Posted by mordukai

Jaffe for God of War 4...make it happen.

Posted by CrashTanuki

So he's going to create a new studio that will partner with Eat Sleep Play, who in turn partners with Sony for its games. It's like the Inception of game development.

Posted by Gabriel

Jaffe seems like he would benefit taking an five year break from making games and becoming an Truck Driver.

Posted by Foggen

This is the best vote of confidence in an upcoming game ever.

let him make something new. I got tired after 2 God of War games and with 3 in the main line and 2 spin offs and all being exactly the same game with varying degrees of prettiness, his talents are put to better use making something fresh.

Brad Muir is in that picture. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

Posted by TheHBK

Hopefully he won't be on the E3 bombcast to bitch and moan about publishers.

Posted by rudyarr

also patrick you should have mentioned the lay offs that also took place.

So David leaves Sony to create his own studio. Now he's leaving his studio to make another studio?

So, how long until he leaves this next studio?

Posted by Delta_Ass

Twisted Metal's gonna be that bad, huh?

It's mathematical. Jaffe will continue to create studios that are farther and farther away from him, and leave them faster and faster, until he is creating studios at the edge of the observable universe and leaving them in infinitesimally small periods of time. It's how man (or at least game developers) will go to the stars.

Strangely, they still manage to make at least one game.

Posted by Ronald

I've been expecting this for awhile. Jaffe just lives too far from the studio to keep working with them for too long. I hope he gets a new studio near his house and works on big titles, because I would rather have a God of War or Twisted Metal over another Calling All Cars.

Posted by RE_Player1

Jaffe is the man. He responded to some of my tweets and seems like a pretty chill dude that just gets a little angry when people take what he says or does out of context which is understandable. Can't wait for Twisted Metal, got that sucker pre-ordered.

Man, TM is going to suck.
