Dawnguard’s Finally Out on PC, But PS3? Well...

Performance issues blamed for DLC's delay on PlayStation 3.

The amount of content in Dawnguard means PS3 players really are missing out right now.
The amount of content in Dawnguard means PS3 players really are missing out right now.

Dawnguard, the first expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is now available on PC for $19.99. It is not, however, available on PlayStation 3, and it’s unclear when that will change.

The reason: it's not ready.

“We are not satisfied yet with Dawnguard’s performance on the PS3,” said the company in a statement on its blog. “We would like for everyone to have a chance to play Dawnguard, but we aren’t going to release it for PS3 knowing that some people’s experience in Skyrim will be worse. “

We have come to expect, and to some extent forgive, some of the issues that plague the traditionally ambitious Bethesda Game Software releases. Skyrim had serious problems on PlayStation 3, however, which is why it technically wasn’t part of our Game of the Year award for Skyrim last year.

“We do everything we can to have our content available to all; from our free updates, to user mods, to paid DLC,” continued the statement. “We’re as disappointed as our fans when that isn’t the case, but we’ll continue to push for that reality.”

It's 2012, the PS3 has been out 6 years and this multi-million dollar studio still can't code for it yet.

Pretty pathetic.

I somewhat blame Sony for having such an obtuse platform that it sucks to program for. And I say this as someone who has a PS3 and not an xbox.

Hopefully when the PS4 is released, Sony takes into consideration the potentially long life-span of future consoles and the hardware isn't shitting itself by the end.

Now that everyone yelled at them for vanilla-Skyrim, releasing broken shit is suddenly somehow a problem.

Screw you guys.

At least they are being honest about it. Besides, releasing a busted ass DLC for a quick cash grab is way worse

Christ, Bethesda, you just can't get development for the PS3 right, can you? Almost makes you wish they did this for Skyrim proper. But also, and most importantly:

I had a feeling this was the case. Well, at least it seems like they learned and aren't going to put out something broken and fix it later. Probably.

I think they kinda missed the boat, a month ago would have been the perfect time to put it out on PC, before the steam sale and with august releases a ways off. As it is, ill get it eventually, but im not gonna pay 20 bones now for it, ill wait till its cheaper + im done with borderlands 2 and darksiders 2 and dark souls PC and my steam sale games

This almost pushed me to buy skyrim again on pc. Then then I remembered I'm kinda done with skyrim for awhile.

I could have totally made an arrow in the knee joke there. Applaud my self control.

Kind of unceremonious for the PC release. Unless I just haven't been keeping up with my gaming news, I'd not heard a word about the PC status until... well, it's out!

And now I don't have the time to jump in.

To be fair, Bethesda isn't the only company that has issues porting games to the PS3. Obviously most not quite on this level, but still.

Last I heard Sony plans on changing the architecture of the PS4 to fall more in line with a PC and Xbox, so third party games won't be inferior compared to Xbox counterparts.

Can't say I'm surprised, what with all the issues the main game suffered at launch. Just hope it doesn't take too long to get it ready.

Maybe this should be an indication of how stupidly obtuse it is to code on the PS3 rather than another reason to make fun of Bethesda.

Many of the bugs from the 360 release of Dawnguard, such as the alchemy lab issue in Breezehome, are still present in the PC version (yeah, I'm nuts and have both). So much for 360 users beta testing for PC users, eh? Dawnguard also doesn't play along with many mods but I guess that's to be expected until modders have time to catch up.

That excuse stopped being valid a while ago as most ports are now equal or only ever so slightly inferior on PS3. It's not like Bethesda don't have the resources to figure the system out, plenty of other studios have managed it.

"we aren’t going to release it for PS3 knowing that some people’s experience in Skyrim will be worse"

Wait, Bethesda is actualy changing their stance on releasing crappy versions of their stuff on the PS3?

This is just PR mumbo jumbo. It'll still be busted as hell when it comes out.

Unless they just so happened to be called Criterion, Kojima Productions, Atlus, Epic, Visceral Games, Treyarch, United Front, Rocksteady, Volition, Sega's Ryu Ga Gokuto team... should I keep going?

Oh yeah, and also the people who released one of the best-selling games from last year have no fucking excuse as to why they cannot hire a handfull of decent PS3 coders. QED.

I still find it strange they are having this much trouble with the PS3. I played Oblivion on the PS3 which was better then the 360 version mostly due extra time they had on it. I also experienced almost no issues with my launch PS3.

Then I played Fallout 3 on my PS3. Which at the time I think PS3 was considered to be the less buggy console version. Think it suffered from some worse performance issues in the late game but the 360 had more quest/game breaking bugs. I also played that on my launch PS3 with pretty much no issues.

I have since switched to PC gaming. So it really seems weird to me that they are now terrible at making PS3 games. My vanilla PC experiences of Oblivion and Fallout 3 were fairly comparable to the PS3 experience as far as stability is concerned.

It must be in such a state that every time someone at Bethesda is fires up the PS3 version of Dawnguard, the PS3 explodes. Because that would be the only explination why Bethesda was perfectly happy to release the PS3 version of Skyrim in it's pre-alpha state, but waits to release Dawnguard because they're not happy with it

@iAmJohn: It took years for them to figure it out. These companies use Unreal Engine and Frostbite for their games, mutliplatform engines that drive many games. They have to be good, it's in Dice's and Epic's interrest.  They give complete tools to their cutomers, this makes development on multiple platforms much, much easier.

On the other side you have Bethesda with their own engine. They make huge games, this takes time. I imagine there is little time to work on the engine.

P.S. Treyarch? Really?

Oh it took them years, did it? Not like Bethesda would've had any practice with Oblivion, or Fallout 3 (which was also fucking broken), or New Vegas...

And yeah, Treyarch, because the PS3 version of Black Ops was pretty okay and close to the other ones, because Treyarch is a company that learns, unlike Bethesda. I could also throw Platinum into that mix as well considering Vanquish led on PS3 and was slightly better on it.

Who didn't saw this coming? The PS3 is the weakest link in today's consoles, even if it's the most powerful machine and, to my opinion, has the best I.P., it still has the worst multi-platform titles due to its dev kit being, according to people, the hardest to code.

People should know what they're getting into by buying a PS3 as their only home console.

@Szlifier: There's alot of multiplatform games that are fine on the PS3, Bethesda is a huge company and have all ready had 2 other games + dlc on the PS3, so its not like the are totally new to the architecture of the PS3. Theres really no excuse. Other than the cynical one: they can see the PS3 version probably sells the worst and they have a deal with MS. So they can't really be bothered with the PS3 version.
