DayZ Now Becoming Its Own Game

Development on the mod will continue as the standalone version suits up.

No Caption Provided

In what seemed like an increasingly inevitable move, popular zombie survival mod DayZ is becoming its own game, creator Dean Hall announced today on the game's blog.

Moreover, ArmA developer Bohemia Interactive will actually be partnering with Hall to create the game. Hall will server as the project lead on this more ambitious take on DayZ.

“This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago,” said Hall.

Development on the mod will continue, as well. Hall said the big questions about how this splintering will impact each project will be answered in the coming weeks.

The official website for the new game is www.dayzgame.com.

I'm pretty sure Rocket or whoever he is said something about this weeks ago and it's suppose to be out before the end of the year.

Its currently in alpha which it has been for the past 4 months. He did say in a PC gamer in-game interview that the final goal was a stand alone game but never mentioned a date to my knowledge.

There's what, five open world zombie survival games in development right now? The Human Element, Dead State, The Dead Linger, this thing, and the inevitable Dead Island sequel? This genre is going to be as beat into the ground as modern military by 2015.

Thats what happens in any entertainment field when something gets popular though.

ALPHA=JANK, of course its janky, OF COURSE. That's why its an alpha right now and nothing more. They will fix the JANK as much as any other game would fix the JANK before the final release. Poor Rocket, he has such a JANKLESS job haha ehh

Excellent. The ARMA II demo always gave me weird mouse lag and performance issues so I never bothered to check out the full game (even on sale).

i'd be interested only if it's on the Arma 3 engine... already bought arma 2 just for the mod so i'm not really interested in buying in again.

I think a big part of the DayZ atmosphere, the whole bit about "long periods of intense boredom punctuated by short bursts of intense fear" is just something Arma already brought to the table except with some of the enemy soldiers controlled by the AI (the game supports absolutely massive player counts on servers and even has a mode with base and unit construction where every player can field units and command them around while also acting as a foot soldier). Anyone who's been adding realism mods to games like Battlefield 2 should really play Arma because that's probably what he's looking for. Supposedly the online community is composed of people heavily into milsims who will act like proper soldiers instead of rushing headlong into the fight.

Agreed. I was holding out for this to happen because of how terribly eastern-european ARMA is, and not in a good way.

Man, somebody on Facebook won't shut the fuck up about this game and it's really beginning to give me a negative impression of the game itself. Which is crazy because I think the basic ideas here are pretty cool, whether or not the zombie thing is completely played out is another issue.

The real kicker would be if playing the alpha in no way prepares you for the way that the stand alone game will play. There may be a lot of angry people once this thing releases. I'm still interested in this, but I just have a bad feeling that they will dilute something along the way that makes the game less satisfying.

"Hall will server as the project lead on this more ambitious take on DayZ."

I laughed at this part not because of the typo but because of the troubles I've had with servers in the game.

Day Z is one of the best PC gaming experiences of my entire life, and I'm not even exaggerating. Aside from the recent surge in script kiddies, that is. Hopefully that would get fixed soon because right now it has been unplayable for me. Every server gets a drive-by shooting from a script kidding on average of once an hour if there are ~30+ people in the server. Very unfortunate.

Bright future here for Day Z, and namely Bohemia Interactive. These guys are really onto something revolutionary in sandbox PC gaming and I wish them the best.

@ajamafalous said:

While he did say a few times in the past that he'd like to turn Day Z into a full game so it can reach its full potential, this was not announced. He never hinted or insinuated that Bohemia would pick up the title and put him in charge. While this was my guess all along, it was all speculation and rumors up until now - aside from rocket just saying "Yes one day I'd like to make it a standalone game". This is still news, because now it's official.

But It's a sandbox game. Of course they'll probably add things like fortifying buildings and whatnot. Perhaps a better system to hide/manage your caches and camps. But this is a sandbox survival game and it is what you make of it. The last thing anyone wants is for it to turn into another MMO! I think for the most part they want to leave it open ended. One could argue the same thing for Minecraft. Or for just about any game for that matter. "What's the point?" Well, entertainment is the point. This is such a tense game that it almost doesn't even need a goal. The goal is to not die at this point, and that's it. Even then, it's still damned fun (all script kiddies aside).

Cool, maybe it won't be broken. Not starting with a weapon makes the game silly, and the server shit needs some real work. I logged off about 5 minutes after finding a freakin shotgun AND bolt action with a decent bit of ammo each (after using a crossbow for a while, after having to just crawl around until I happened upon a corpse with a weapon because until you get a weapon there's nothing you can do in the game any more), and when I logged back in, I lost either the Ammo or the guns. I forget which, maybe it was I lost one gun and the ammo in the world for the one I had disappeared, and the ammo for the one I didn't have was still in my inventory. I don't remember because I turned the game off and haven't played since. Maybe my new PC build will encourage me to try it again, but not until then will I touch that game.

I'm waiting for this game to have it's own objectives that might encourage me to play it. "Survive the zombie apocalypse in this hardcore military sim" just isn't attractive enough for me to pay a dollar for.

Day Z might benefit from some minor objective based goals, but I wouldn't want it lose its sandbox appeal because of it. It's a difficult balance to strike. If you don't "get" the attraction of a game like this, then you probably never will. Come on, the industry is already littered with linear games that hold your hand throughout its entirety.

you dont build anything in day Z though. there is no point but survival, and if thats the case then all you have to do is hole up with food and water and not take any risks. if the point is 'survival' its boring, if the point is 'kill zombies' its boring as well ..

i dont think its ok to justify it as being a sandbox game because theres no substance to it. something like minecraft is 'what you make of it' but theres a LOT to make of it. you have many options, you can build what ever you want. in day z all you can do is gimpy inventory management, and walk around, and shoot zombies. theres not enough substance for it to be ok as a sandbox game. its a cool idea and it could be a great game, and i hope they expand on it. also for a sandbox game to have a point it doesnt need to be an MMO with some kind of PVP at the end. .

for day z they could have something like, an objective, maybe a bit of story, where the point is to move from place to place, gather gear and equipment and food, and eventually get to a helicopter or something. they could be randomly generated and lead different groups of people to different parts of the map . the game could detect if you are in a group or solo and decide the objective or course of action for you, it could also detect the choices youve made and the equipment you have and what kinds of challenges it could give to you. thats the kind of stuff they should work with for the full game . .

the choice isnt 'one extreme or the other'.. the choice isnt 'no hand holding, or too much hand holding'. . . with these types of htings there is always a happy medium or a balance to be met .. this game could very much meet a balance and be better for it . thats what im waiting for.

Yea DayZ is in alpha right now and will go through beta and then become stand alone. It started its life as a mod and still is a mod but the finished product will be considered its own thing. I guess the Minecraft analogy Rocket uses is the best way of explaining it.

Honestly I almost think we need a different word than 'game' for stuff like this. I love the game, I loved Minecraft and I loved EvE Online. None of which have a defined goal. Some people seem to need to be told what to do in a game. I and a lot of other people are not like that. We regularly set objectives for ourselves within the game. Perhaps something like 'virtual world' would be more accurate and guys who need to be told exactly what to do could quit whining and just move on to something else that is more structured.

Ok, I thought you meant there was already a standalone version that was in alpha rather than the mod being in alpha.

minecraft doesnt tell you what to do and i love that game. there are other 'sandbox' games which i have loved, which have had substance. day z is not one of them. its not that it doesnt lack a goal and is a sandbox game, its that it lacks the substance it needs AS a sandbox game. the things you have to do are completely pointless. and it just amounts to 'goofing around in a virtual world' .. which is not something i am interested in. minecraft is persistent and you can build things and use your imagination and make up stories for the things youre building as youre building them, and come up with purposes for them. in day z all youre doing is collecting items, shooting zombies, and evading zombies.. these things are not fun enough to warrant staying in that world for more than a couple hours. games like left 4 dead do those things in a much better way. and the fact that they have defined objectives dont take away from them.

like i said, games like this need to have at least more substance, or SOME objective to make them enjoyable. you can have a sandbox game with objectives. you can have a sandbox game with substance. this game needs one or both.
