Deal Of A Lifetime?

Would you pay $300 for one game? Jeff just did.

If all else fails, at least we can dance.
If all else fails, at least we can dance.
OK, Star Trek Online is out on February 2--a little under two weeks. Much like it did with Champions Online, Cryptic is charging the industry standard $14.99 per month. But there are other options. If you go for three-month blocks of time, it's $41.97, or $13.99 per month. Stepping up to six months gets you in at $12.99 per month.

All of that is run-of-the-mill pricing stuff. Of course, you still have to buy the actual game, which is $50... unless you want the collector's edition, which gives you some extra doodads for a total price of $60 for a downloadable version and $80 for a physical copy, which comes with a fake communicator and some concept art.

Again, nothing out of the ordinary here. It's the two other payment options that are throwing me for a loop. These are limited time deals that are only available until February 1... you know, the day before the game actually comes out? If you opt for these, you can lock yourself in at a yearly rate of $119.99 (that's just under ten bucks a month) or you can just do away with all of this monthly fee crap and give Cryptic $239.99 for a lifetime subscription.

Keep in mind that's the lifetime of the game, not the lifetime of the player.

 SPOCK GOT GAME
 SPOCK GOT GAME
Now, until I saw the lifetime subscription package, I had almost no intent of even playing Star Trek Online past the end of the open beta. The beta seems fun enough. The systems feel reasonably well-conceived, I guess. But I haven't really played enough of it to figure out if the game is actually any good or not. That's what makes these additional offers so tricky... you have to pay up front for a game that might not be all that great. Heck, it might not even reach or maintain the subscription numbers it needs to survive, if you want to get technical about all this. But that's probably a misplaced worry... surely something with the Star Trek name attached to it will at least attract an audience for the first year or so. From there, it'll all depend on how much support the game gets.

At this point, I'm essentially trying to talk myself out of dropping $300 on an MMO. But the notion of paying once for a game that normally has a monthly fee associated with it is incredibly appealing. What if the game's a hit? What if the late-game stuff is amazing? What if my latent Star Trek nerddom takes over and I get fully hooked on it? Regardless of all that, I have to make my decision before the game is even officially available. Sneaky. Very sneaky.

At this point, if I'm going to play it at all, I'm going to get a lifetime subscription. The other option, paying a monthly fee, would feel like an endless ripoff with what I know now. In the back of my mind I'd always know that, for the price of 16 regular months, I could have eliminated the fee thing entirely. It also removes some of the pressure of actually playing an MMO. Half the time, I played World of Warcraft out of guilt, just because I knew the meter was running. There's something weirdly liberating about eliminating the regular fee.

Christ, this is starting to sound like an informercial.

Maybe that's the worst part about all this. It's a very salesy sort of thing. By forcing players to make a decision based on time in a decidedly shaky open beta, players are asked to place a certain amount of faith in the game's developers when making this decision. I guess City of Heroes was/is well-supported. Seems like Champions Online has seen some meaningful updates since its launch. Surely a big licensed thing like Star Trek Online would at least get that level of support, if not an additional layer to keep the license holders happy, right?

Fine. OK. I've talked myself into it. I like Star Trek. So I am going to buy Star Trek Online. End of story. This, people, is why they still make licensed games. Because occasionally someone will get suckered in without paying any attention to the quality of the actual game. Now I just need to decide which pre-order bonus I want...

Steam. Done. I don't need a concept art book or little communicator badge that'll just sit in its box forever. $300. God, it's like I just bought a whole new console or something.

 POR VIDA, HOLMES
 POR VIDA, HOLMES

 Dear Star Trek Online,

Please be good.

XOXO,
Jeff

It's quite smart actually because it means if the game bombs (and based on what I've played it seems highly likely) you just got 16 months paid from quite a few people.  It's a good financial move, especially since there's a game coming out in around 12+ months that will likely butcher STO seeing as how it's also in a space universe. in a storied IP, and being made by a very high quality company (similar to what Blizzard established themselves as before their first MMO).

People your your not thinking fourth dimensionally! If you like the game a lot its a good call Jeff, I paid $200 for a lifetime subscription to Lord of the Rings Online and haven't regretted it, especially when there are those who have been paying $10-$15 a month for that game for over two years now. I can see myself playing that game till the servers go down and considering Turbine is running servers still for Asherons Call, an MMO that has been out for ten years now, I'll be playing for a long time. So 10 years of playing at $10-$15 a month is $1,200-$1,800....yes I'm glad I paid $200, lol!

Didn't Jeffrey twitter that he didn't go with the life time offer before this went up? Can you get it even though you already pre-ordered/bought the game?

Paying up front for what is usually a subscription IS very enticing, but 300 bones...? You gotta LOVE Star Trek to justify that.

Blizzard would never do such a thing with their new MMO. Why? Becouse they know, their game will be successfull, therefore lifetime payment would work againts them.  This Star-Trek online however, will be covered in dust pretty soon, therefore the lifetime fee idea was obviously appealing to them.

I kind want to do the lifetime subscription for that borg character.. But I have no idea how the game plays because I can't even run the Beta on this PC. I'll have to wait until my new laptop gets here...after the beta ends. Which means that deal is gone,,,

That is an amazing deal, if you play this game once a month for two years the $300 paid off. So if you really get hooked on it you really got yourself an amazing deal.

I thought about it, but it seems like the whole doing the same missions over and over again thing, just like City of Heroes. Also, I didn't like all the different kinds of currency you have to keep up with.

Better yet donate it to Haiti.  Dude there's gonna be so many more promising MMOs in the future.  The beta for this game didn't excite me at all and had nothing that indicated it will become interesting in the future.  I am personally waiting for the new Planetside MMO.

Oh Jeff... You aren't going to play STO for more than a month, you know that right?  From what I have seen the game doesn't even look solid enough to warrant a 50 dollar purchase, much less a $200 one.

I know how Jeff feels with regards to relieving guilt about monthly fees. But at the same time, I would not put down three hundred bones for a game I'm not convinced will be around all that long. Even if it IS Star Trek.

Star Wars: The Old Republic on the other hand, that I would pay a lifetime subscription for. Not because it's Star Wars (not entirely anyway), but because BioWare are the only developer I have significant faith in.

Well, if you're a star trek fan and want the comfort of dropping in for month bursts for the next 5-6 years, then this really isn't a terrible deal.  I actually think this deal isn't a bad idea, however, not being able to opt into this plan post-launch is kind of shady.

MMO's suck, you know this! They are full of jerks who will invite you into a group and then kick you out, calling you an idiot for wanting to tank with only 22k hp. Even if it was for the easiest instance in the whole end game that you had already completed the previous 2 days without the slightest problem

This is why you had borderlands. A game free of gankers, spawncampers, ninja looters,'tards, jerkasses and goldspammers.

...I miss WoW.

Buying lifetime subscriptions of an MMO is just an epic fail. I think the developers and the distributors know that the game is so crappy that it will most likely be shut down within 1-2 years. Thus they figure out that they might as well sell life long subscriptions.. You didnt see blizzard do that, because they knew their game will survive for more that 1-2 years and thus would lose insanely amounts of money if they had that kind of subscription plan.

Yes, I too am a lifer, or no-lifer as this case may be.  It was posted somewhere on the STO forums that the lifer deal was going to be available after launch, but for $300 and without the Borg option, making it a better deal now rather than later.  Lifers are supposedly going to be offered special items and content first as more things are added to the C-Store, yes, microtransactions for stuff like Tribbles and giant Q-Tip melee weapons are going to be part of the business model.

I look at it this way, I've been playing WoW for about 4 years, that's roughly $700.  If had the option to pay $300 5 years ago for unlimited WoW That would be a steal.  As far as the life of the game, as long as Star Trek fandom exists this game will be going.  EQ and UO are still going for Christ's sake, and those are over ten years old.

STO has one thing that I think Jeff gets out of it more than any other MMO, you can do fine solo.  He's stated before that WoW lost its appeal when it came to needing other people to progress.  STO gives you NPCs to be your party, and if you do get a mission with other people - they're just there and you all do your own thing and kill shit.  This is where STO will make a big difference to people who don't like MMOs where they need other dudes to play.

The only question now is, will you play Star Wars, since it does the NPC posse too?

Live long and prosper bitches.

well if it sucks, two words: Business Expense (something that you don't have the option for if you don't have a site like Giant Bomb)

If that's not the case(unlikely) well his process of thought is still somewhat  reasonable.

I personally would strongly consider a similar offer from lets say Star Wars licence (Old Republic anyone?) or even Final Fantasy XIV...

let me ask all of you xbox users would you buy a lifetime Live account if the price was tempting? Here's the deal though Live and Old Republic won't offer these sort of life time scrips because they don't have to, they are not on shaky ground, and they have hype machines on top of  more solid(looking) products.

I hate monthly fees for almost anything, and the ability to reduce that down is always something that I think about when the topic comes up. I am not a trekker,  however so I could care less about star trek online.

@Diamond: LOTRO offered lifetime subscriptions for $199 at launch (and still does offer them at $299), and has been very active and doing great since it came out in 2007. Its seen two expansion packs and tons of content updates since launch. Offering lifetime subscriptions does not mean that you plan on having the game tank :p

@ Jeff That said, they would surely offer lifetime subscriptions again in the future, and you could have subscribed for 3 months to see if splurging on the lifetime subscription was really something that made sense for you. Subscription fees are such a hassle though, I find I can really take my time without worrying about 'having' to play a game to make sure I get my money's worth when I play LOTRO (lifetime) or free-to-play MMOs like DDO. Playing MMOs on a monthly subscription just doesn't make sense if you want to play lots of different games.
