Despite Positive Buzz from GDC, Hybrid Delayed into 2012

The Scribblenauts developer is taking another year to work on their first shooter.

Until Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell finally showed Hybrid at the Game Developers Conference this year, the question on everyone's mind was simple: what's the hook? The hook turned out to be dynamic, cover-based multiplayer shooter where you don't control basic movement at all. Impressions from GDC were solid, but in a pretty surprising move, 5th Cell announced today Hybrid's coming in 2012.

“Hybrid was very well received this past GDC; people really seemed to enjoy it,” said 5th Cell CEO and creative director Jeremiah Slaczka in a brief statement today, “but with an additional year, we can take what we've learned and really drill down on our ideas to hopefully transform this game into something great. At 5th Cell, our goal is to strive toward making the best titles we can, with the extra time we can make quality a focus."

Using the term "additional year" certainly suggests this is a lengthy extension of Hybrid's development time, but given that people were already digging it, even more time can't be a bad thing for Hybrid.

Delays don't always mean a game is bad...sometimes it means they actually turned out to be better than expected and need more time to be refined because of this.  I heard some very positive things about this game after GDC, so maybe what was supposed to be a rush-job turned into a larger scale project because of all the positive feedback on the game.
This is what I suspect as well.  I think the delay means they plan to take it a little more seriously when they discovered that they may have a real hit on their hands.

Take the time you need to polish the game. Don't rush it.

Looks like ton of fun, great to see they're putting more time into it to make it better. Going from Scribblenauts to this is quite a leap.

Sounds a but like Full Spectrum Warrior (the lack of direct control at least).

This year is already way too crowded. Good move on their part pushing the game to 2012.

Great, some cool ideas, glad to hear they are taking the time they need to make it all fun.  I think they might be on to something really cool and something I could really get into.

this Jeremiah has the right atitude within limits. I do not know what it says about the game, and being MP effectivly leaves me out anyways. I would really like to have a true understanding of their mechanic.

Better to take more time and add polish than push out something that they feel could be better.

5th Cell have went in a very surprising direction for me.

I was hoping they would do a XBLA/PSN title but more of a platformer with a "hook", The guys over at 5th Cell seem to want to make something unique every time and it has worked for them in the past but upon hearing Hybrid was a shooter I was puzzled wondering what the "hook" would be, Taking away control of full movement seems weird to me as it will have to work perfectly to not be annoying, The controls will have to work excatly as you want them too as inputting a command only for your avatar to do something different and then dying will get very annoying.

IMO the video does not look promising although this is all i have seen of it, Press opinion was good after GDC so i assume it is a game that plays better than it looks, Generic Halo aliens did not help I expected a more unique art design.

That is just my first impression, there is some talented developers over at 5th Cell so I look forward to some more in depth previews of this game before judging if it is worth a purchase or not.

Maybe it's a game that needs to be played to be understood, but judging from the videos, this game doesn't look all that fun to me. The restriction of the way you move is weird, of course, but as a core mechanic, it looked like it would be frustrating more than anything. Regardless, I like the exploration of new ideas and am interested in how the game shapes up, especially with the extra time they'll have to work on it.

I'm still not sure what this game really is, and damn that Jeremiah seems like such a douchebag, but I'm kinda looking forward to it.
