Did 3DS Just Get Achievements With...Accomplishments?

Don't get too excited yet, though.

The slightly delayed 3DS firmware went live today, introducing the ability for publishers to sell DLC, 3D video recording, and more hats to collect also introduces what may be Nintendo’s answer to achievements and trophies: accomplishments.

So far, accomplishments are limited to the StreetPass Mii Plaza and have zero point value, but it’s not hard to imagine accomplishments eventually expanding into actual games.

Nintendo didn’t trumpet the idea of accomplishments prior to this firmware update--in fact, I don’t remember the company mentioning them at all. Then again, that sounds like typical Nintendo.

If Nintendo decided to make accomplishemtns part of Virtual Console, my world might actually fall apart, and I don’t even really care about achievements that much.

That's cool for people that enjoy them. It's a nice bonus.

Oh nice.

Neat-o. I guess. I dunno. I don't even have a 3DS.

I was sad when they were never mentioned. I feel like every system should have some form of this, as they add replayability and cause players to explore a world more than they might have originally. Hopefully this expands to other games.

I stand by the fact that there should've been like... a single achievement or something for each 3DS game - a hat. Or some accessory. Completed Mario 3D Land? You get a tanooki suit for your Mii. Beat Ghost Recon? You get that sick future-y visor thing. Beat Zelda? Your Mii gets a Master Sword.

But they're tied to your device, right? There's still no real online account or identity?

That is a cool idea. Gives you some additional motivation to actually beat the game.

On the other hand, they make players bug out and play games for the wrong reasons if implemented poorly. That being said, this is still a nice feature and it's cool to see it as part of the update.

Nice. A step in the right direction for Nintendo. Hopefully they develop this into a full achievement system.

Posted by iAmJohn

Well that's cool!

I have had my 3ds for about 4 months and have only streetpassed 1person and that was on the metro

Posted by FoxMulder

Seems like an awesome thing to add to a handheld. Though I will not buy a 3DS until the next gen full Pokemon games are released. Then I will NEED to buy one!

While I get Nintendo's stance on achievement systems, like Miyamoto saying playing and enjoying the game should be the achievement, I find myself more and more invested when games have compelling achievements/trophies or bonuses like avatars and clothing options. I don't even necessarily want these things to brag to friends but I like seeing that I got a platinum trophy in a game or an S-Rank etc. I hope this step shows that Nintendo is open to a system like achievemnents/trophies and does have the ability to implement it in future releases.

What I wouldn't give for some Rhythm Heaven achievements. Or even accomplishments.

I want MK7 achievements.

Posted by Kordesh

Hopefully this is the first step of Nintendo actually embracing online and creating a coherent profile system so that we can actually do DLC, have decent multiplayer, and do away with friend codes.

Accomplishments huh? I always hoped they would be called Coins )=

Posted by bunnyfiend

If the achievements are for say... 3DS happy club member exclusives...

@Shaanyboi: It should've happened for the Wii year ago, but they ignored it and let Microsoft run away with the full potential of that idea.

Posted by Marz

They should use the experience from doing this for the Wii-U, i'm sure people would welcome that feature for the next nintendo console.

Edited by bricewgilbert

Yeah jesus christ they would sell sooo many virtual console games if they had accomplishments. I bought Bomberman 94 when I got my Wii at launch and that was it. Add accomplishments and I would buy a disgusting amount of games.

Posted by AlisterCat

I approve of this. Please add this to games.

Posted by SMGB25

No one else noticed the typo?

Posted by Nightriff

Add it too the wii and I might, MIGHT, be interested in picking up that controller more than once a year

Accomplishments, Achievements, Trophies - whatever name, it's one of the worst things that has ever happened to the gaming industry. The LAST thing you want to do is give idiots something else to help them feel special, entitled and/or like a bigger douche than they already are. Let's face it - accomplishing anything in video games is already a questionable use of one's time. These just make it even worse. I was really hoping Nintendo would just ignore it completely, whether they go away or not. It's just the right thing to do. Just because they appear to be popular doesn't mean that paying attention to it is a good idea - look at the Kardashians.

If you need a reason to purchase a game beyond playing said game, you're an idiot. And I don't want you in the same online community I inhabit.

Speaking of the 3DS, are people in the ambassador program still getting those GBA games? I remember Nintendo saying that they would arrive by the end of this year...right?

Should be yeah but theres been absolutely no mention of it from Nintendo.

Just watch this space I guess.

The rational man in me says no, but the achievement whore say "please, please MORE!"

Kill me.

Who the hell cares if other people like achievements? It doesn't effect you in any way. If you don't like them, then fine, ignore them.

And how is accomplishing anything in a video game a "questionable use of one's time"? What exactly is an acceptable use of one's time then?

Quit being a gaming hipster, vinsanityv22. Even if someone only plays games for them, it effects you how exactly?

Yeah, I've been thinking about that lately as well.

@vinsanityv22: Hey, adding a fun incentive to dig deeper into your games is both great for the marketing of a game and its players.

Player: I think I'm done with this game, so I'mma go trade it in... Wait, lemme see what achievements I'm missing... Ooh, that sounds fun. I bet I can do that! Guess I'll hang on to this for a bit more."

I don't really care about achievements and stuff either, but getting mad at those who do is ludicrous. Quit being such a hater.

Some people have fun playing games, some people have fun collecting things, why is playing a game for fun better then collecting, trophys for fun?

@PatrickKlepek Small typo in the last sentence:

"If Nintendo decided to make accomplishemtns"

Good news article though ! =)

The thing I love about achievements is just being able to see a big list of games of played and things I've done in them. I like to run back through it every few months and remember some of the things I've done. I'd love to be able to do that with Nintendo games, so I hope this turns out to be more than a throw away feature.

Posted by joeq1159

Just got the update. I noticed that the store is down. I hope they add some new content worth buying soon. Ive been really looking for some games to play from the E-Shop.

Posted by Zaxex

I think achievements are generally a good thing. There's loads of things I've done in games for achievements that I wouldn't otherwise have bothered. I played games on easy until I got the Xbox 360; why not, it made no difference on my end.

Now I actually finish games and sometimes 100% them or finish multiple play-throughs. I get a lot more value out of them and have a means to measure my completion of a game; so I can trade it in and end up playing more games.

Completing Super Meat Boy, finishing all the trials in Super Street Fighter IV and recently finishing Geometry Wars were really fucking hard but also really rewarding. And without some sense/form of accomplishment wouldn't it make more sense to watch a movie or something?

Without achievements I'd play less of 360 games; unless I were doing the same things anyway to prove a point, which would be fucking stupid.

I'd rather have the 3DS get a hardware revision with non-laughable battery life, built-in second circle pad, significantly better online functionally across the board, and a decent sized screen(preferably 4.3") that can go brighter than the current model with better 3D viewing angles.

Posted by MisterSamMan

The flame has be reignited. Nintendo is finally jumping into the modern era.

Posted by Dagbiker
@ChrisInCali totaly diffrent teams, but I get your drift
Posted by M3rlin

Sweet! I have been using StreetPass a lot in the NY subway recently and now after Black Friday I get more and more hits!

Posted by AverageGreg

I don't play games for achievements anyway; I suppose this is a cool addition to those who actually care about them, but it's not gonna affect what I buy or how I play a game in the slightest.

Also this.

it would destroy many peoples lives. i was a a achivement adn trophy whore and it was the worst thing ever. afer major rehab I only play the games I want to play. Nintendo would do this.

Posted by dillinger

@nick_verissimo: I've been wondering that too. I want my goddamn GBA games.

Posted by calophi

It'd definitely be awesome if Nintendo started doing this for their consoles. I can't believe they've let it go this long.

Posted by evanbower

Also, it's great that the accomplishments are retroactive. It was nice getting 8 or so immediately when I downloaded the update, rather than have to redo it all.

Posted by mariokart64fan

well i could care less about a useless number, if these points were usable for eshop games , then fine but dont take away physical unlockables in favor of this cause as ive learned from 360 my experience w achievments aint a good one,

-------- look how many xbox360 games acutally have unlockable modes or splitscreen or anything worthy of mention,
