District 9: The Movie That Replaced Halo

Here's what Peter Jackson and director Neill Blomkamp got up to, after production of the Halo movie fell through.

Remember when there was going to be a Halo movie, with Peter Jackson executive-producing and his hand-picked director Neill Blomkamp at the helm? Most of you probably recall the tangled web that became the aborted film's production cycle, which mostly came down to ballooning budgets and other financial issues, but if you don't, here's the quick synopsis straight from the Wikipedia article.

In 2005, a script for a film adaptation of Halo was written by Alex Garland—which D. B. Weiss and Josh Olson rewrote during 2006—for a 2008 release. The movie was to be developed and released by 20th Century Fox, under the creative oversight of Microsoft. Peter Jackson was slated to be the executive producer, with Neill Blomkamp as director. Before Blomkamp signed on, Guillermo del Toro was in negotiations to direct. The crew has stopped and resumed preproduction of the film several times; while Blomkamp has declared the project dead, Jackson says the film will still be made.

Jackson and Blomkamp didn't part ways when Halo fell apart, though. Instead, they made a long-form version of the short film that got Blomkamp noticed in the first place, Alive in Joberg. The full trailer for that movie, District 9, was just released. So while it's not Halo, it's at least gives you some sense of the combined creative talents that would have brought Master Chief to the screen... or still might, if Jackson is right.

Just for the sake of comparison, here's a link to Alive in Joberg, which apparently impressed Jackson so much in the first place.

Do you think Halo will ever get made? Seems like a toss-up to me, at this point.

i remember the KICK ASS short film that this movie is based upon. it was directed by the same guy too...

it was super realistic, and it gave me hope that the halo movie would be cool. but this will be far more interesting and might end up as a classic modern sci-fi like children of men.

chances are though, they're doing this to show he is capable of handling a Halo movie as a director. Ya know, like when the Wachowski Bros made the movie BOUND, just because they needed to prove themselves before the made The Matrix.

This will definitely turn out far better than a movie based on Halo in the first place.

I'll wait until the movie before I make any judgement, but I would like a Halo movie, I'm a huge Halo fan and even with all the books there is still so much left in the Halo universe to tell.

What's there to get excited about?   Alien Nation did this 20 years ago, and at least Alien Nation had Jimmy Caan.

They already made this fucking movie.  Then they made a fucking TV series out of it.  Talk about recycling ideas.

Oh wait, it's all a giant metaphor for apartheid?  Who gives a shit.

I wonder why this is featured with a song from the Solaris soundtrack, just like LORT stole the score from Requiem for a dream. Is Peter Jackson behind all this? ^_^

I don't know if they can carry that premise out for 90-120 minutes, but if they can, this looks incredible.  It's all going to depend on whether or not they can keep ratcheting up tension for the duration of the film.  There's so many ways they can go with this though.

Yes a Halo film will get made. Whether or not it's by Jackson/Blomkamp or even the same script is not set in stone... but Halo has become too big of a cultural phenomenon to not have Hollywood/MS cash in on a movie.

Hmm I'm genuinely intrigued. For the first half minute I thought it was actually a movie about the apartheid which would have been interesting in itself. It's good to see the whole alien contact idea being given a different treatment again. Treating them as a "race" of sorts and looking at how we would interact with them should make for good watching.

Halo will never be made. Not with Blomkamp on it, he's made several short films, but they're all cryptic as hell and only present "pitches." He doesn't seem capable to make a two hour film, or a film that works as a Halo movie. He's inexperienced and this would be his first big title with a huge budget. Even Sam Rami had to work his way up to $250 Million dollars on Spiderman 3, and even Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight had several other successful films before taking on a huge budget. Giving Blomkamp this project is a mistake.

I think they should just completely change the story for the movie. Hugo Weaving as Master Chief. He can recreate his long "V for Vendetta" monologues with a Covenant twist while Angelina Jolie, playing Cortana, looks on with her lips pursed and a bit of sideboob.

Now that movie has potential :p

Man, this looks like one of those movies that will either be a breath of fresh air , AKA Moon, or low budget Sci Fi. I hope its the former.

I wonder if this movie will get many screens in the US because it's directed by an unknown. Then again, the Peter Jackson name should help with PR.

This is cliche in so many ways. It may be interesting, but its just an extended edition of the short film he made earlier, which worked, as a short film. Other than the mothership and what not, it looks like a school project someone is making.

I'd much rather see a completely new sci-fi IP than some dumb action-flick spinoff set in the Halo universe.

@plagueseason as it's shot like a documentary that's the reason for the pixelated faces, as you often see pixelated faces in documentaries when journalists in some cases choose to protect the identity of those they're filming

Yea, this looks like a better movie than a Halo movie would be. Maybe it's just because I thoroughly enjoy new movies that deal with aliens/monsters taking over the world. Not sure if that alien looks very convincing though. And what's up with the pixelated face? Are they trying to pull a Cloverfield and "hide" the monster until the movie is released? It doesn't work that well when you can get the general idea of what it looks like anyways.

0 % chance of Halo movie.  The franchise is on a downslope.  That new Halo: CYS  or Halo: GBA or w/e better be really good for it to have a chance.
